Note 7

My Note 7 should arrive on Monday. One particular feature I am hoping for is the ability to write on pictures.

Does anyone know if this feature is present in the Note 7? Thanks!

Yea you can use screen write or import it into Samsung notes.

I just thought ud chime in and say without a doubt, the battery life on this phone is significantly better than the Note 5.

I was struggling to get much beyond 3.5 hours of screen on tine but I'm at 1% with just over 5 hours and 15 minutes of screen on time.

This is with always on screen turned on, lots if email accounts syncing, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, all going, with web browsing, clipboard etc. With generous screen brightness (set to auto).

I'm super happy with my Note 7 at this point. Just ordered a Spigen Neo Hybrid case for when I'm doing high risk activities but I love the feeling of the phone without a case.

I also bought the Samsung charging stand with an adaptive fast charger for my computer desk whole best buy had a killer sale going.

I also got notification that my free Samsung Level Box Pro BLUETOOTH Speaker has already been shipped. I'm pretty surprised about the speed on that. Combined with the free 64gb micro AS card, I feel a little less sting from the expensive price.

Come on, drop the TouchWiz crap talk. It is so easily repacable and there's ton of options out there. Customizable options. So really, whining or even mentioning it at this point is pointless.

Root is a must for me as I hate ads and need that adblock. Sure, Samsung doesn't make it easy to root, but people still manage to root it.
Heck,I own a dual SIM S6 Edge+ which is barely supported by developers (there's ONE kernel for my version) and I am still able to run it rooted.

You evidently are unaware that Touchwiz is not, and has not been limited to, just the launcher for years and years....

Touchwiz envelopes every stock app in the stock ROM. The ONLY way to "replace" touchwiz is to flash AOSP ROMs. That is it. Sure you can install a new launcher...but TWiz code is everywhere in the ROM from the notification panel to the lockscreen to the settings app to the SMS and phone and voicemail apps.

You post is like saying because you change your desktop picture, you are no longer using Windows.

Is there any distortion of an image along the edge from the curve?

Yes when using an app or looking at a web page with text up against the edge of the screen with no margin, it absolutely distorts, not enough to make it un-readable but enough to be noticed.

I went to the store to check it out today and was not impressed. It felt quite plastic-y, and the curved sides are so small that they offer no function. I don't see the point. It's fairly gimmicky looking now.

In fairness, I did only spend a few minutes with it as I was getting pestered by an employee.. He tried showing me another phone, and couldn't tell me the specs other than it was 32gb of memory. He showed me his Gear S2, I asked him how he liked Tizen compared to Androidware, he didn't know what either was, so he finally left. It was a funny encounter.

I've had the Note 3 & 4, but now I suppose I'll wait another year.

Then I don't know what everyone is talking about TouchWiz slowdown, because with Nova, there's no lag.

New exploit protections
As isn't uncommon with Samsung, they've built-in some new (and arguably ineffective to actual exploits) protections directly to the kernel code, that cannot be turned off by just modifying the boot image ramdisk.

This time, they've decided to kernel panic in case a 'priviliged' process (uid or gid below or equal to 1000, so this includes root and system processes) creates another process that isn't stored in /system or rootfs. SuperSU itself does this, but so do a great many root apps. Any time this happens: immediate reboot.

I'm not going to elaborate why in my opinion this is a fairly useless protection exploit-wise, but needless to say it is fairly bothersome for the normal root user, which is probably a lot more relevant for the average reader here.

Unfortunately - unlike many of the security features developed by Google - this feature is not easily disabled by modifying initramfs (boot image ramdisk), and requires further trickery to bypass.

Maybe a better bypass is yet to by found, but for the time being, I have resorted to patching the check inside the kernel itself when the systemless SuperSU boot image is created. This prevents the user from needing a custom source-built kernel, but it's questionable how long this hex patch will work. The code that performs this patch is fairly trivial - it may keep working the rest of the Note7's lifetime, or stop working the next update.

In other words, this could end up being resource intensive to support, or not. We don't know yet. We have to wait and see what Samsung is going to do.

Bearer of bad news
We know S and Note development are generally strongly related, so we should assume to see the same 'protections' appear in the S7 sooner or later as well. This is probably the (ugly) way forward.

Workarounds
Aside from the binary/hex patch SuperSU employs (see common/hexpatch inside the ZIP), there are some more ways to get around this protection.

If you're compiling kernels from source, it seems that setting CONFIG_RKP_NS_PROT=n gets rid of these protections. You may want to disable other RKP and TIMA settings as well, but that is the one directly relating to this issue.

This protection also disables itself in recovery mode, so simply copying a boot image with these protections to the recovery partition and rebooting into recovery (which will then just launch Android) will work beautifully as well.

Saw that when he posted it. Doesn't bode well at all for the future of root on Samsung devices. Hell root isn't even all that useful on Samsung devices since the bootloader is locked. Means you're still stuck with that laggy, performance killing shit known as TouchWiz.

With LG removing fastboot commands which makes things hard, that leaves HTC and Nexus devices. Well...I know what I'm buying from now on no matter what. All Nexus...all the time.

I always scratch my head a bit when folks say they value the openness of Android and then buy a Samsung phone, or LG, or something similarly locked down. If you want guaranteed access, you get a Nexus... Google is the only vendor in the Android ecosystem that doesn't have a vested interest in limiting what you can do.

Fuck Scamsung. So happy I got the Nexus 6P, still loving this phone.

Samsung phones can be really great, but they need Custom ROM's and custom Kernel's to bring out that greatness. Once a good developer tweaks and changes Touchwiz it's a million times better.

But a stock Samsung phone with no root or anything, is the frigging worst. Like an iPhone.

Samsung is worse because they don't update their phones as fast as apple does.
