A recent survey conducted by research analyst Jessica Smith found that HTC Vive is currently the most popular platform among developers. No doubt one of the reason for this is, as Kyle has covered in our VR performance reviews, is the HTC Vive's room scale play and handheld controllers.

Stand-alone headset platforms are most favored by developers in the early days of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). HTC Vive is the most popular platform among developers, with almost half of developers creating content for it, according to a survey of 543 developers conducted by the Virtual Reality Developers Conference in July and August 2016.

To me, there is only one reason the Vive is a standout in this market and that's because it's the cleanest looking of them all.

The Rift is pretty clean, but there's one huge flaw - no motion controllers and no roomscale. 3D and head tracking are cool, but the real "wow" of VR is room scale immersion.

Yes, oculus majorly screwed the pooch by not launching with the controllers. The popularly of the Vive is amazing given its cost disadvantage.

Does the Oculus Rift have something the Vive doesn't have? The way I'm looking at it is that the Vive can do more than the other while still doing what the Oculus can do. I mean, I can sit down and use a controller with the Vive right?

It's similar to people buying the PlayStation 3 because it was also a blu-ray player.

I assume the reason it's more popular with developers, in absolute numbers, is because there is almost no barrier to entry with getting your game on steam.

Oculus' store is more curated so there's no guarantee your weekend indie project will get approved.

Oculus rift has exclusive games, most people think it has better ergonomics, it will play all vive (steamvr) games once Touch is out, many people who have tried Touch say it is better than vive's controllers.

You can play controller games with vive but there aren't as many. Most of the "big" ones are rift exclusive.

I have a vive and I hope rift/touch are successful so more people make games and more games start having sustained online populations.

Something is wrong with their data. Playstation VR at only 13%? I call total bullshit on that. Every indication I've come across up to this point is there is a ton of shit in the works for it.

Perhaps they are putting far to much weight on all the shitty little indy projects people don't give a shit about.

Lots of stuff coming for the touch controllers due out in October rumored as well.

The thing is the cost disadvantage actually isn't that significant when you consider the cost of the motion controllers and the PC hardware required to get a good experience out of it in the first place. People on a tight budget aren't buying either of them.

This study was specifically about developers too. If you can't afford an extra couple hundred dollars I don't think you have the resources/money to develop a VR game in the first place.
