No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

Oh, apparently the Windows Game Bar let's you record in W10. Going to give that a try.

Edit: Thought that was too good to be true. Didn't work. It looks like they don't allow full Windows hot-keys to work, possibly related to that alt-tab glitch people have mentioned. Trying something else...

Afterburner doesn't have the Predator portion on the current version. Not sure if it's Windows 10, the specific version, etc. It's still listed as a feature on MSI's site. I'm running an MSI 1070, so that part should be fine if it's brand-specific. ShadowPlay isn't letting me start the recording portion without a supported game running. No Man's Sky isn't in the list on NV's site. Any idea why the video capture and OSD tabs would be missing in Afterburner? I didn't see any additional downloads on their site apart from "Kombustor"... I'm quite versed in this sort of thing otherwise, but not simple screen recorders like SP and AB. I don't want to go hunting for Malware infested "free" recorder apps. If you have other suggestions I'm open to them. Now I'm kind of on a mission :D (jerk... :p ) so I'm looking around as well. hehehe

EDIT: I would just stick with ShadowPlay as for you it would seem to be easier to use...plus you already have GFE installed...Afterburner is easy to use but requires a slight bit of technical know-how...or just play the game and don't worry about taking video
-----------------------

don't install Kornbuster, that's a different program to stress test your GPU...what does the Predator portion mean?...you don't need an MSI card to use MSI Afterburner, it's not vendor specific...EVGA, ASUS GPU owners can and do use it...with Afterburner you just need to install it and go into the Settings to set the keys you want to use for recording, screenshots etc and for the OSD...you need to check the box that says 'show in On-Screen Display' for the different items like GPU temperature, fan speed, framerate etc...you also need to have the Rivatuner Statistics Server installed in order for the OSD to work (it comes with the Afterburner install)...

go to the official MSI Afterburner website to install it and not just from any John Doe website...
Afterburner - MSI Gaming Series

or you can also use the Guru3D site to download

Got the Windows one to work. Recorded it on the highest available settings. (not sure what that means... it's typical dumbed down MS) I'll post a link when I've got this online.

Edit: Ugh, it recorded at 1080, but only 26FPS... ...thanks MS...

That's exactly where I got Afterburner. The video tabs just don't show up. I'll see if I can figure it out. This MS XBox Game DVR thing is useless...

Edit: Duh... I've been up too long today. I didn't realize it needed the RivaTuner portion to do this. Fixing it now...

Ok, I've got recording working. However, it seems my 4690K may not like recording 1080/60 while I'm playing, as I get hitching while I'm recording. Not without. I'm going to try to lower the video size, and you'll just have to trust me on the settings...

Edit: Ok, it's uploading now. It's going to take a little bit. 20 minutes(ish). Anyway, the video is recorded at 720, but I hopped into the settings menu, so you can see what it's running at. There are a few minor hitches, but it's because of the video recording. Those go away without it. I think it's either CPU or Disk IO doing it. I'm recording to the same drive that the game is on. It's solid state, but there you are.

Getting a little tired now, so maybe I'll investigate a bit further tomorrow, and see if it's GPU or CPU heavy.

Anyway, it's smooth as silk while I'm not recording, and even pretty damned smooth while I am, so no complaints here. It could definitely be better, but it's enjoyable. I'm running my i5 at stock clocks, so maybe a touch of OCing might make it run the same while recording video as it does at stock without. I don't have a very [H] cooler on it though, so dunno.

I'll post the link in a few.

Edit: Edit: 50% done... :p

950MB video... Wish my upstream was as good as my down...

what's the point of recording at 720p?...the point was to capture in your words the 'flawless' performance at 60fps/1080p...just play and enjoy the game and don't worry about proving anything...if you say it's 'flawless' for you then more power to you

Because it still shows you what the frame rate is. I'm not PLAYING in 720p, I'm capturing 720p video from 1080p game. Processing 1080 video and writing 8+GB to disk IS causing some hitches... That's why I went into the graphic settings menu, so you could see what the GAME is running at. I could record 320x240, and as long as the game is running at 1080, it would have the same effect.

As far as enjoying the game. I definitely am. I'm just trying to be nice :p You got me going on a little "side quest" we'll call it. I don't work for Hello Games, and you're not required to buy the game. I don't HAVE to prove anything, but what else am I going to do at 1:53AM... :D

Here you go:

Don't forget to switch Youtube to 60FPS HD...

You'll notice a slight stutter near the ship when I'm getting in, and a little hitch after the roll going up into the atmosphere. That only happens while recording video. If I don't, it doesn't. Maybe an i7 would smooth that out a touch with the extra threads, or maybe a bump in CPU might. Otherwise I'm guessing it's all the disk IO. Anyway, that's all the video I've got in me for the evening.

are you using Afterburner?...let the overlay show on screen where it shows your frame-rate, temps etc

:D I can do that tomorrow afternoon. I've got my daughter's birthday party in the earlier part of the day. Happy to do it though now that I've got it set up. (Yes, using Afterburner... )

nice video...graphics look like crap (foliage, textures etc) but that's another story for another day :D

Alright, I'm lost. I didn't know about this Atlas Pass or the hyper drive thing... I kind of skipped exploring my first planet after a little and went straight to the other 3 or so planets around the first one.

I'm stuck as I cannot find this anti matter stuff.
Is there a way to find where I started from? The specific location to be more precise.

I'm reading about how there's free anti matter on the first planet. So I'm back looking around and I'm not seeing any Points of interests at all though.

Some performance related stuff I picked up around the web:

1. Play in Borderless Window.
2. Edit the file TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML and disable GSync (it's ON by default). If you have a GSync monitor you might want to try it off to see if it helps.
3. Update OpenGL driver.

I'm gonna track down some direct-capture PS4 screenshots and see if it also has the res scaling problem.

edit: This is PS4. It's a phone pic but pretty obvious upscaling.

You do definitely want to use DSR for this game. I'm personally using 4865x2036 which is 2x DSR for 3440x1440. Using 20% smoothing getting over 60fps. I do wish their UI scaled properly though, it is a slight annoyance.

Personally I've had no crashes or problems yet with the game. System is listed below, I'm on Win10 with AU and 369.05 Titan X driver. If that helps anyone. I also play at fullscreen with maximum ingame settings, framerate set to max (but I capped it in nvidia inspector at 60).

Here is my 10 hour+ review... (yeah been playing all damn day till 2am lol).
I ran the game on older drivers (16.20.1035.1001-160708a-304504C) without major issue. New ones increased framerates while flying (it's now smooth at constant speed like the demos..) and made borderless window mode not really any different to full screen.

Have figured out what and why the hitching is occuring during flying. When smooth flying without changing speed, it does not lag at any altitude. Only when slowing down (forcing higher LOD detail in anticipation for you landing....) or speeding up (changing to further LOD in anticipation of you covering fast distance) - literally it only lags when you push W/S to speed up/slow down.

Other minor hitching is due to environment generation too... e.g. standing looking over a large plain then turning to face an unseen extensively large cave with lots of flora and fauna. So hopefully they get this sorted with further optimisation, perhaps more cores (maybe not with a basic understanding of paralellization) and I have a further justification to upgrade to more cores.. I wish.

I have a bug using my logitech MX master where the middle click (discard) does not work. I just use another mouse middle click to do this for now.. weird issue. Can't reassign the key either.
Only other minor bug has been when changing multitool gear, sometimes it'll rapidfire plasma blasts after changing stuff, really good fun when rare minerals/sentinels are around... usually can be stopped by going into menu again or changing mode on weapon.

Biggest game ever with the smallest install ever - 2.8GB and exactly how much VRAM it uses on 1440p maxed out.

So far, very, very engrossing, the atmosphere, sound/surroundings and immersion is amazing. I don't think I have played a game that's better than that in this regard. Absolutely worth the $ and it blows my mind everywhere I go... absolutely stunning and yet totally desolate and isolating at the same time. A true 'come home and escape' after a hard day of bullshit type game.
So far I'm tentatively putting this up there with the best games I have ever played.
Met all of my expectations and more.

If I had to relate it to a game(s), it's like Crysis with aliens meets Skyrim meets New Vegas (sans invisible walls thank fuck) meets star wars meets universal combat meets eve online with hints of half life set in the entire fucking universe. Mind boggling stuff.

Will be getting a deep space hyperspace upgraded ship soon (grinding Emril ftw) and going to try find some crazy shit out in dead space, between planets and systems.. exciting and reminds me of some of the fun solo exploring of EvE.

TLDR: If you have ever wanted to explore the galaxy with a UFO - this game is for you.

Cheers Hello Games!

That's why I'm hoping this works out. I want this to succeed.

Considering what a team of 12-15 did, now with two QA teams on board this week and budget behind it - I'd say it's just a matter of time. It's the biggest steam game out this year with 214k players on launch. That's a lot of people to whinge when stuff goes wrong and likely why we heard so much of the issues and not so much praise.

It's easy to criticise them [HG] but after my experience, yeah, perhaps it could've been $50 instead (I did pay about that actually!) to account for the imperfections, but it's fully worth it and us PC players have only just scratched the surface. I'm not even sure if the PS4 crowd have reached the centre of the updated galaxy yet (it's 10x larger post patch). Can't wait to see the funky shit as I get closer but I'm in no rush at all. The journey is the game, not the destination.

I'd say wait it out a few more weeks if you want a slightly more polished product. I usually get pissed off at games like this (with niggles) but the game play is so engrossing, it doesn't really matter. Same with graphics. Sometimes they look good, usually they're okay, but of course - graphics are nearly inconsequential next to good game play.

Played for another 4 hours last night. It's starting to grow on me. I found an abandoned spaceship (much like the one you start out with), except this one had 20 inventory slots! I also saw ships at the space station with 29 inventory slots. That helped me really get into the game. Also not rage quitting and figuring out how to change between blaster and mining gun helps lol.

Performance for me is pretty solid. I am running 1440P no AA and getting 120FPS. It hitches every now and then but its not too bad, I think having it on my NVMe drive is helping...not sure though.

I love figuring out new alien languages through the Monoliths. Someone complained about the Jet Pack being useless...there's an upgrade for it. I ran into a planet that had a extensive cave system. Pretty sure I was underground for a good 1.5 hours exploring.

I read somewhere that the Devs are working on base building. If that gets added then I may not play another game for a long time.

Thanks! So it's running well, no hitching or stuttering? And may I ask what resolution and settings you're using?
To be honest I haven't really PLAYED it. All I did was get it running and the phone rang and I had to work on a customers rig. I did spend half an hour trying to exit the game!!
I am fixing to fire it up and actually try to play it in a little bit.
I am running i7-920 with 6GM RAM and SLI 660 @ 1080p

Yea.. I've never seen so many thumbs down. I think it is from little kids trying to get it to run on their puny craptops. Although I have an old rig and it started for me. Took a minute to figure out I have to hold the 'E' button to actually start playing in the beginning. I've never owned a console so that was foreign to me.

The more I hear and the more I see it seems like this game would, if anywhere, have found its proper place on the Wii.

It's way too stressful for what it is, especially when you consider the resolution scaling.
Anybody with a generic Intel quad core and GTX 970+ shouldn't have any problems at "1080p".

So after doing fixes online and such, I've got the game running smooth as butter with no hitches. My main complaint now is that awful pop in when flying. Flying is most of what I do in this game right now (seeing every world is toxic around me) and the weird pop in (displaced haziness in areas) is getting more annoying the more I play. Reminds me of playing gears of war back in the day with the texture layers slowly coming in.

Oh well, nvidia drivers coming in next week so let's hope that resolves some more issues.

Agreed but you know Sony is one of HG backers for this game I would have been shocked if they actually let HG sell the PC version at launch for less than the PS4 version MSRP.

Yikes. I need a new video card. Plays like crap on my SLI 660's. O well. Maybe in a month or so it will run better.

Ok playing a few hours now, can someone recommend a good way to get bloody new inventory space for your suit/ship? I've been to 3 planets now and still stuck with the starting inventory and it's really really killing my enjoyment of the game. I loathe inventory management anda this game is absurd with it, especially the amount of things it throws at you early on from containers/loot that don't even stack even though they are the exact same items (IE Gek Charms, power sources, basically any Alien trading commodity that isn't a resource).

I came across a crashed ship that I could repair and it had one LESS inventory space then my starting ship....

Heh, this is the first game I can recall where the exit/quit game button is in the options sub menu lol.

that sounds annoying...if it's the exact same item the game should allow them to stack and not take up another inventory slot...I've read a lot of people complaining about the inventory management in the game so hopefully they patch it quickly

On the planet, find a red beacon that requires a bypass chip and unload a ton of bypass chips on the Shelter option to locate the drop pods. Some planets have a lot more drop pods than others. Another option is if you find and follow the atlas quest, you'll be notified of an anomaly in orbit that should give you the Atlas Pass v1. Every space station has a atlas v1 room with suit upgrades.
The crashed ships are normally +/-1 slot. The highest ship you can buy is always +9 slots of your current ship, until you reach the maximum of 48 slots. Depending on the starting planets, it should be faster to mine commodity resources to buy a better starting ship, than it is to find a crashed ship. After that it's pretty fun to search planets for rare resources to buy the third ship or find some crashed ships. However, you'll probably want to buy the last ship if you care about how the ship looks, so you can still use a few crashed ships to help you reach 39 slots or so.

Check all the machines in the little outposts and installations. They give you plans for upgrades. The faster you upgrade your exosuit the less hostile the planets are. I've upgraded stamina and one or two other things. I now only have to keep life support charged regularly. Hoping to get a bigger power source or something that will solve that.
