VRWorld: "Titan P" launching August 2016, 50%+ faster than GTX 1080.

If you're Nvidia and you have a bunch of GP100/102 chips that didn't quite make the cut, what do you do? Release Titan early... Gotta keep the stockholders happy.

Yes. Build the best and people will pay. But build the not-best that costs more than the best and people will not pay. A GPU is not a luxury car (and yes, luxury car manufacturers do actually compete with one another on price).

If AMD could offer a comparable product (and not just in speed, but power consumption, noise, etc.), then that is good for the consumer as you have an additional variable affecting the price in that particular market. Remove any comparable competition at a certain level of performance and the manufacturer is free to charge the highest price their market research indicates consumers will pay. At the high end of the GPU market where 1080's reside, AMD is currently non-competitive. If AMD were to offer a card at a comparable level of performance for cheaper however, Nvidia would most likely adjust its price accordingly (downwards).

Can you even step up to a Titan? If I recall it only applied to X80, X70, X60 cards. I haven't even thought about it but I thought a few years ago there were some people on the forums complaining when the original Titan came out and they couldn't step up to it due to Titan's having limited quantities. 1080Ti will probably come out 3 months after the Titan P.

Yeah, I don't think the Titan line has ever qualified for a Step Up. The Ti-series has, but we don't know yet if GP102 is going to be the Ti version or just a less expensive Titan variant.
 
I would be surprised if they price too high up the scale. Anything more than $1200 and they reduce the already small market for the Titan to an incredibly small one. Besides, even the Founder's Edition 1080 wasn't an extraordinary jump in price from historic norms. If they plan to increase I would expect a slight increase on both the 1080Ti and Titan so they preserve the market for those products (which are probably already highly profitable). Since I have a 980Ti Hybrid currently, I am interested in a Titan, but only if it is less than $1200 and also a Hybrid.

Everyone expected Titan X to be priced at $1,200, probably because that was how much the Titan Black was, and it was still released at $1,000. I can see the 1080 going down in price when/if the 1080 Ti is released, just like the 780 did when 780 Ti came out. It's a new node, so NVIDIA probably wants to take advantage of the hype and quickly amortize their costs with the 1080.

I would tend to agree. NVidia has profited greatly from the expanding consumer market for GPUs. However, it they suddenly go off the rails and increase prices too much, they will either lose market share or they will shrink the overall market as people go back to non-GPU configurations. Neither will benefit NVidia or their Shareholders, so I expect them to keep pricing pretty much Status Quo.

If they release a big Pascal consumer card this early whats left for them to use for a 2017/18 refresh until Volta is out? If there will be a new Titan card in August it wont be 50% faster than the GTX1080.

Not sure but I do recall that the Tesla P100 did not have all CUDA cores enabled and this Titan card might be similar.

IDK about this, I just purchased a gtx 1080 and that damn thing is 45-50% faster than 980ti when overclocked and they all do it pretty well. Even stock is 30+. Why the need to hurry up and release a titan card, i guess its just for marketing to reach out to that less than 1% of the market. Will probably work!

My guess is they will price it so as not to cannibalize 1080 sales. Probably going to be well over $1K this time. I'm guessing $1500. If they are releasing it this early this time, it also means there might be more of a gap between the Titan and Ti release.

I bought the Nvidia branded one from bestbuy. Founders edition. I wanted that one because I wanted to blow the hot air outside of my case since I have a SFF build and the quality is top notch on the cooler itself. And that gtx logo showing through the case window looks dope too.

I get it monday. I had to order it online. Seems like Nvidia branded ones come in and out of stock at best buy all the time.

I had a 1070 first but my memory on it seemed horrible. I couldn't even overclock it 100mhz, seemed like I got the worst sample there was lol. So I returned it at the store and they had 1080s available online. I was like what the hell, performance is there even though it is another 250. It will just last me longer.

It does seem that launching a Titan in August doesn't make a lot of sense considering that the 1080 won't have competition for many more months. And really, a 50% jump in three months? If that does come about in that time frame it's going to be very expensive. And very desirable. I'd seriously consider picking up at least one if that's true. But I really don't need to.

Yea thats the whole point. I spend 700+ on 1080 I don't see myself going above that. Nvidia can have something 100% faster lol. Because the 1080 is going to play everything I want at the resolution I want at ultra settings. I mean I really don't see the point unless ofcourse I am going for personal 3dmark record lol! Shit my whole system was 1600 after I put it together with 1080. If that thing is priced over a grand oh hell to the no. lol
 
I've actually been considering selling my 1070 and upgrading to a 1080, but this makes me want to wait.

Does anyone have any idea of a price point? I'm assuming this close of a launch to the 1080 we're looking at a 1k card.

At least 1k, if it's really 50% then I'd expect it to be more. And if you think there was gouging going on with the 1080/1070s you ain't seen nothing yet if the Titan P is that good. Why would you want to move from a 1070 though? That's sill a hell of a card.

That probably sounds about right. Still if this is the rumored 50% faster than the 1080, it will be an absolute beast. (not that the 1080 isn't already) Would certainly love to be able to afford one. 4k gaming at Ultra would finally become a reality. (for a Price)

Why wouldn't you release a product when there's no competition? It allows you to charge more.

Anyway, I bet this thing will be super expensive so anybody buying a 1080 won't see their GPUs drop precipitously in value overnight.

True and you don't have to worry about making tons of them and you can get buy with supplying just enough quantities. Pure profit I guess and if they make a thousand a month and sell every single one of them I bet they are making close to 100% profit on these if priced at 1500 lol. You are right make more profit as long as you can.

Because you don't need to and can hold on to it when necessary? But your point is equally valid because it's not like AMD is going to have anything anytime soon that would be able to compete with something 50% faster than a 1080 and nVidia could charge pretty much whatever it wants and people would buy it. And I'm one that would take the bait.

Damn lol! I got the cash too but no way I ever spend 1500 on a video card if it is price that high. I just spet 700 and I still don't know if I needed it lol. But if it was 100% faster than 1080 I could see myself spending 1k. Other than that not worth the cost to me.

But Nvidia is no longer attached to their MSRP, founders edition has fucked all that up. A sign of no competition. AMD has really put high end GPU consumers in tough spot. We pretty much have no choice. I went from 500 to 700 because of no competition. Damn you AMD!

I really don't care about some more power usage. I usually get the best for my money and I have no brand loyalty. But its not like I really had another side to compare to this time.

That sums up how I feel. It looks like Vega won't launch until 1st quarter 2017. That unfortunately is to long to wait. So I'm pretty much in the same boat. Either 1070 or 1080.
 
Why are people talking about 2x 1080 all of a sudden? It's gonna be 50% faster maximum, clock for clock.

We just don't know yet, still rumor city. I would expect the 1080Ti to have DDR5x using GP102 but the Titan version may indeed have HBM2 ram on it for a pretty penny with the GP100. I expect Nvidia will salvage the GP100 that didn't make the cut but still good for a gaming/pro card.

This round Nvidia made sure the 1070 and 1080 had better separation in performance then previously. I expect that to be the same with the 1080Ti and Titan.

That makes little sense for a couple of reasons.

1. Tesla P100 already uses a cut version of GP100 (28SMs vs 30SM full die)
2. They will not undercut Tesla P100 for double precision work, and selling a Titan with GP100 is definitely undercutting
3. If they cut GP100 further (compared to Tesla P100) then it will offer lackluster gaming performance compared to GTX 1080 (considering price)
4. If the Titan part is GP100 then then GP102 will basically just be the 1080Ti, or do you think they will make another Titan ?

384bit G5X @ 12GT/s is my guess. That makes for 576GB/s; new Titan with full complement of 30SMs, new Ti with 3/4 SMs disabled (but still full complement of GPCs)

Nvidia is competing with itself and has been since Maxwell. AMD isn't a threat to them as they've fallen way behind and have no chance of catching up. I gave them the benefit of the doubt before Polaris but after seeing it's heat and power consumption numbers coupled with virtually no OC headroom it told me all I needed to know about anything else they plan to make. Nvidia won the gpu wars, FE cards and Titan are proof enough of that.

I just don't see them releasing GP100 for consumers, it makes no sense at all. It's expensive (for them) and no matter how high they price a potential Titan ( even $2.5k) it will simply undercut their Tesla P100 offering and not compare favorably to the GTX 1080
 
GDDR5X just arrived. I see no reason for them to rush HBM just yet.

given the price of HBM2 is something not needed right now with the advancements of G5X, high speed memory with low power consumption at low prices, they can delay HBM2 as much as they want if the bandwidth isn't a limitation for actual cards and actual GPU performance.

I was going by early rumors that were suggesting HBM2. Also considering the Titan is a bit of a Halo product featuring the best of the best inovations.

I prefer right now a 1000$ Titan 384bit bus with 12000Mhz G5X than 1300$ Titan with HBM2 if the performance and memory size are going to be the same.

What a load of shit to try and justify your purchase. Stock to stock a 1080 is about 25-30% faster overall than the 980 ti. Oc both cards and that difference goes DOWN as a 980 ti has around twice the overclocking headroom.

It seems like common sense that the next Titan will be an upgrade that current Titan owners are waiting for....
