NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition Review @ [H]

The EVGA fan orientation looks like they fans draw air away from the card.

Is there a release date for the Asus Strix version? I feel like it's time to upgrade from my reference 780 vanilla.

At 1920x1200 you might as well just get the 1070. You will almost never get the full benefit of the 1080 at that res with your cpu. In Crysis 3 you will see zero improvement with a 1080 over a 1070 in the cpu limited areas.

I'm not planning to stay with this CPU and monitor much longer. Waiting to see what Broadwell-E can do, then upgrading to 1440p and a new CPU.

I wouldn't ask about availability for something that I don't anticipate needing.

Do you think Nvidia will only support build 10586 and up for Pascal cards or is this just for the review drivers?

Edit: I'm asking because I'm on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB N which I got through my MSDN sub and it's based on build 10240. I have no plans to upgrade to a new/consumer build release of Windows 10.

This is just for the reviews, nVidia lists the 1080 as certified for Windows 7-10, Linux and FreeBSDx86 GeForce GTX 1080 Graphics Card. But the latest version of 10 will be majority of the customer base for these so that's where they've probably done most of the work thus far why they wanted the reviews to stick to Windows 10 1511.

Nope it turns out Nvidia will only support Windows 10 build 10586 (1511) and higher:

Like one of the posters there I'm using the LTSB Enterprise version of Windows 10. Look's like I have a problem now. I'm not sure if I'm willing to move to a different version of Windows 10 just for these cards.

I can say with 10000% certainty that the NVIDIA 1080 GPu will not work on Windows 10 LTSB (build 10240) with or without driver signature mode being on or off.

I was on the phone with EVGA and it seems that Microsoft will only fix this issue if we write on their website / call them and complain.

The only solution is to use Windows 7 or update Windows 10 LTSB to something else. Its really sad since the 1080 will only work with 1511 and above.

Anyone find a work around? It is crazy that we have school computers that need to teach 4k / VR and we are unable to do so since LTSB does not allow for new hardware.

Sounds like the school chose the wrong version of Windows. LTSB tends to be for more specialized systems, ones that don't change configuration-wise once deployed.

Sucks, either way.

Yeah, whats the best solution in your opinion fresh install?

You could check to see if an updated LTSB is available and do an in place upgrade. There are updates that come out, but it appears it is not frequent and usually requires installing the updated OS over the existing (instead of just downloading updates). That could be one option.

The other option would be to change to a different license. Doing some quick searching, it looks to be possible to do an in place upgrade of a CB license over an LTSB and vice versa. See here:

Why is the FE so ugly compared to this BEAUTY

How noisy is 1080 FE? I'm starting to think about trading/selling my 1080 Xtreme, because I would like to be able to use it in a secondary mini-itx PC (Node 202 case) when i need to, but not sure if FE is worth the hassle.
