Google and Opera Snitched Out Microsoft To The EU

Bunch of bullshit. If they want another browser download the motherfucker. Why doesn't Apple get sued for only including safari with their OS. Are people across the pond that stupid they need a option right in their faces.

DING DING DING! Winner!
Although, I wouldn't be surprised if NO ONE over there is actually complaining. EU is broke ass anyways. $731,000,000 fine?

Are you against a murderer being put to justice years after his crime is solved? If not, why shouldn't this apply to business?

He's talking double jeopardy, you're talking something else. With his explanation, he's talking about someone who has committed a crime and has been charged, convicted, and punished. Microsoft already had its day in court.

I do agree with you though, for the record. Business should be held accountable just like anyone who commits a crime and are still under the statutes of limitation.

You're right. Except you forget that at some point MS was also threatened to include browser choice or face rather big fines. They accepted. Then failed to honor it after an update. What's left to argue about? We already went through money grabs, us vs eu, etc.

It's not a matter of stupidity. It's a matter of computer literacy.

Those of us that build our own computers, tweak things, etc, represent only a tiny fraction of a percent of the computer market.

Most people can't even install software on their computers without help.

You have to understand the historical context in which this decision was issued. Operating systems didn't used to come with browsers, so if you wanted to go on the web, you had to install one, and go through the process of picking one.

Once Microsoft changed that and included a browser with windows, the average computer user, who is afraid to change any settings, including installing software on their computer was simply going to use the included browser no matter what. This meant Microsoft was leveraging their dominance in the OS market to force their way into dominance in anpother market, browsers. This is a pretty clear example of a violation of monopoly laws in most countries in the world, including our own.

Apple likely does not get into trouble over this for two reasons..

1.) They don't have a dominant OS position from which to force dominance on the browser market.

2.) Their browser market share continually hovers around a few percent.

I say good.

Having been an avid computer enthusiast building my own rigs through most of the 90's, I still very much have the mindset that whatever is bad for the big evil Microsoft, is good for computing in general.

Markets in general - and computing is no exception - turn out being better for the consumer when there is a lively and vibrant competetive atmosphere of companies with small market share, and no behemoth with overwhelming control.

It is not about liking. That is the whole point, MS forces out competition in a way which seems trivial , look at OS/2 you prolly never heard about it.
Seriously? You gonna get hipster up in thread? For one, this isn't the 90's. Microsoft isn't the great satan it once was. Secondly, no one used OS/2 because there was no real reason too. A few companies used it in the 90's (esp with early tech IVR), but it really gave no real advantage. And I didn't "hear about it" because I was there. Take your weak ass shit and GTFO.

If Internet exploder was such a good browser why is it not available on every other platforms so people can enjoy the best browser mankind has ever known , you know the answer to that one...
No one is saying IE is the bestest ever, only that people should be capable of downloading a different browser if they want to.

No one with an Intel mac would ditch their own OS and run windows just for internet exploder. and so on and so forth.
Thats hardly a relevant point. If they have a functional browser, you don't install another OS for a different browser. Inane.

for all those who previously figured out to hold a grudge against Opera, It is the only browser with a small code base. Less code smaller change of errors, the bigger the program the more change of errors.
Nobody uses opera, so nobody cares.

Since most of you can't get past like, when using software like is like nothing. Either it is good and functional or it is waste of time and space.
Is your English your second language?

IE was available for OS X for a number of years. Microsoft doesn't monetize it's browser directly through apps and ads, there's really not a lot to be gained by Microsoft to develop IE for other platforms. The point of IE currently is to leverage the top line features in Windows while conforming to conventional standards.
I almost pissed myself when I read that IE was trying to implement standards.

Considering IE's abyssmal HTML5 and CSS3 support up through IE9 (IE10 is better but still not what Chrome or Firefox or Maxthon are at), I wonder why they even bother. They should fire the entire department and start over.

They accepted at the time, because they would still be punished with fines. It was extortion, not a deal. If I threaten your family so you do something and then end up not doing it even though you agreed to are you in the right or am I? Because you're saying that although I was clearly extorting you, ie forcing you to do something, the fact that you agreed reverses the situation so that you are in the wrong. Is that fair?

Here we go again. We already went through that But ok...

Your argument would make sense if I burned your house prior to that.

Bit of MS boot-licking going on here. MS had an agreement with the EU and they violated it. Does it really matter how the the corporation (not person) was turned in?

Oh and let's not forget: EU laws =/= US Laws

Wow, your's is the only post i agree with. Whether it's right or wrong, you like or hate MS/Europe/human life, MS agreed and didn't hold up their end.

No it wouldn't. It makes sense either way, you burning my house down gives me no right to extort you or force you to do anything because of your prior actions, that you have already been punished for. You seem to be stuck on the prior issues, when they have already been resolved. Prior acts do not justify retribution on future, non wrongful acts. You don't punish someone twice for one action, you punish them once and then monitor their future actions. Not create wrongful regulations in order to punish someone again. That's like you being sent to jail for burning my house down, then after you get out of jail someone punishes you for owning a lighter, when you smoke cigarettes, because they think you're going to use that lighter to burn down another house with no evidence to the accusation.

Herp Derp.,... Internet Exploder..... Herp Derp. :D

I agree.
Let all the dumb-ass European peoples search out their own browser.

Microsoft call center: How may I help you?

European guy: I can't get the interweb on my pc.

Microsoft call center: you must search out and find a web browser to use.

European guy: ?

I'll bet they'll have loads of fun figuring out how to download other browsers with at least one default browser on their system to download them with too.

I have many grievances with Windows.

Why does it only come with Microsoft's version of Calculator?

Why does it only come with Microsoft's version of a terminal?

Why does it only come with Microsoft's version of Notepad?

Microsoft already caters to these imbeciles.

N Edition

Has multimedia support removed from the OS install. This is the version sold to the European market and is missing Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, and Windows DVD Maker. This was due to sanctions by the European Union (EU) against Microsoft for violating anti-trust laws.

K Edition

This edition is sold to South Korean markets and comes pre-installed with links to other competing instant messaging and media player software.

So.... should Apple and Android be sued for not allowing each other's stores on their phones? Microsoft too!. Yea!

I've said before and I'll say it again, they shouldn't need to do this bs. If they were making it hard or impossible to install other people's shit (like the phone market), I can understand, but they aren't.

LOL.

So they can't figure out how to download chrome? Bing it.

http:///b8drdgf

Fucking pussies. Was that so fucking hard?

This is just the EU making another withdrawal from the ATM.
I am a current opera user. I used it because it had voice and could talk. You could have a whole article read to you. They removed that feature. I had alot of RSS feeds in my previous Opera versions, and they got rid of RSS too. They had a feature where you could report issues on websites. I think they got rid of that because I cant find it anymore. So now I keep it because of my bookmarks. I am disappointed in the software honestly. Chrome is my backup though.

Actually, you can download a browser without having a browser already.

Try invoking this in PowerShell:
Code:
Invoke-WebRequest "https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-latest&os=win&lang=en-US" -OutFile firefox.exe

You used to be able to just use an ftp client on ftp.mozilla.org, but Mozilla closed all the mirrors, disallowed FTP protocol access, and set themselves up as only source of the browser. So now you have to REALLY know what you're doing to download Firefox without using Edge or IE.

If Opera were to do something illegal, you can bet Microsoft's lawyers would be all over it, and not only that but probably drown the entire Opera business with years of legal fees.
Fuck Opera. I'm surprised it has survived this long.
Why so much hate for Opera? I don't use it myself but I would think it's good to have some diversity and competition. Has Opera done something to harm you?

I really do wish microsoft will ust pull out all the applications, and then just point the users at the gov and say, they did not allow us to include them.
