I just bought a 1440p monitor but my current card doesn't support the resolution. I want to get a 980 Ti but wondering if i can just throw it in my current pc or if i should rebuild.

Current Specs:

MB: MSI Z68A-GD55
CPU: i5-2500K
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6970
RAM: GSkill DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
PSU: Corsair 850TX - 850W

You sure you might not just simply need to use the correct cable?

AMD Radeon™ HD 6970 Graphics

  • DisplayPort 1.2
    • Max resolution: 2560x1600 per display
    • Multi-Stream Transport
    • 21.6 Gbps bandwidth
    • High bit-rate audio
  • HDMI® (With 3D, Deep Color and x.v.Color™)
    • Max resolution: 1920x1200
  • Dual-link DVI with HDCP
    • Max resolution: 2560x1600
  • VGA
  • Max resolution: 2048x1536

met-al is right. you can change cables to get higher res than your hdmi.
but if you do want to upgrade it will work. although you will not get 100% of its potential performance. it will be slightly cpu limited but it will still be a massize step up.
edit: how much ram do you have?

Sorry I was confused it's 3440x1440.

Also ram is 8gb

should work fine. update your mobo bios to the newest available before installing a newer card. if you can OC your CPU and double your RAM too you'll be good for a while.

It'll work just fine. My HTPC is similar with a 980 Ti. No issues at all.
