Weakest link?

Despite what it may look like, I am not a new member. I forgot my password and the email address for verification is no longer active. So, I had to start a new account.

Anyway, my son has been complaining about Fallout 4 not playing very well, even on low settings. If I can upgrade an item without building a whole new system for him, I would be willing to do it.

What is the weekest link of his system?

Gigabyte B75M-D3H
Core i3 3220
8GB DDR3 800MHz 11-11-11-28 (Brand unknown at this time. I can look if needed)
EVGA GTX 650 Ti

Will upgrading a single component do anything substantial?

Thanks!

What case and PSU does that PC have?
What's the max resolution of the monitor?
How much are you willing to spend total on upgrades?

Corsair 430CX V2 430W PSU
NZXT Source 210 Elite White with Black Front Trim ATX Case
Samsung Spinpoint F4 HD322GJ/U 320GB HDD
Samsung 2 x 4GB MV-3V4G3D/US DDR3 1600 RAM
Win 7 64-bit
1920x1080

$200 or less if possible.

GPU is the weakest link and that CPU is a close second.

Your best upgrade would be a GTX 960 2GB card for ~$180.

That is probably where I will start then. If I were to upgrade the cpu as well, would the other components be adequate?

GPU will be your best upgrade for gaming. But if you upgrade your CPU to at least an i5 it will help. The rest of the system is somewhat okay. I'm not too pleased with the PSU, but it's a ressurance upgrade, not a performance one.

Just the GPU if you ask me. I had a 650TI on my HTPC, and replaced it back to my old 5870 and it's improved big time for the console like gaming on the TV. Forget about the CPU, or anything else in that matter. But, if you want to make things a bit flashier, an SSD always drastically helps on load times in every part.

Talk with Kyle about your older account he might be able to help you out.

Yeah, Fallout 4 runs fine on a Core i3, although not as fast as a Core i5.

But at 1080p the 650 Ti will fall flat on it's face. This card wasn't capable of 1080p gaming when it was released three years ago!

The GTX 960 can play Fallout 4 on *almost* max settings - you'll just have to decide between higher godrays or HBAO+.
