Verizon Hiking Unlimited Data Plans By $20

If you're on unlimited, your contract is already over. They haven't offered unlimited plans for years.

Not true. I'm on unlimited and my contract doesn't end until June of next year. As someone else said, there were loopholes to extend your contract and keep unlimited data.

Also, this is total BS. From the article:

The price increase, said Hamby, will allow the company to maintain a high-quality network.

No, the price increase is 100% pure profit. It's going to cause unlimited users to move over to more expensive tiered plans. They will be paying more money for the same data. I don't even use that much data on my unlimited plan since I'm on wifi all the time, and moving to a tiered plan would increase my monthly bill.

I just checked, and I average about 4 GB per month, which is not a lot. If I drop to the 3 GB plan, I would save only $5 per month, but I would have to watch my data use like a hawk. I would end up paying more per month for overages. If I go with the 6 GB plan, I would end up paying about $10 more per month. Now with this new $20 price hike, it pretty much forces me onto the 6 GB plan. They knew exactly what they were doing when they priced it this way, because I bet most unlimited users don't actually use much more than I do.

I think I'm gonna look at what my ETF will be and see if it's cost effective to just drop them sooner rather than wait until my contract is up.

Sprint an option for you guys? $30/mo for unlimited text, data and 2GB full speed (throttled after, so no overages) Granted, I'm in Chicago (their biggest market) but it's been working great even when I go on the road.

I can tell you aren't going east then very far. I would say Hammond, Indiana is about all the further you can get from Chicago before Sprint stops working in most places.

My parents are on sprint in ohio and terrible coverage. Plus they seem very cryptic about what you actually get or dont get with their plans. They sell like stereotypical car salesmen. Trying to get them to switch away but Im sure many of you know the "well weve had it this long and switching just gets confusing" argument from parents.

Well for me switching to one of the new plans would be a lot cheaper... currently I pay 266 per month for 4 lines 3 of which are smart phones with unlimited data this new bs hike will bring my bill up to 326 per month if I went with one of the new tiered plans I could go with the 20gb plan for 120+20 for each line reducing it to 3 lines for 180 plus taxes and fees but to me unlimited is worth the 126 difference. As my only other choice in town is AT&T.

If tmobile was here verizon would loose most of the town.

Everyone keeps mentioning T-Mobile...yet their prices really aren't that great UNLESS you have a single line and need unlimited data. For multiple members, you have to buy separate data amounts, which aren't shared IIRC. I pay $150 (taxes included) for 3 lines and 10GB (11 currently with promotion) on Verizon, but it's never obvious who will use the most data that month. With T-Mobile I would probably have to get at least 3GB per person. That would end up being $120, so ~$20 cheaper after taxes for less data overall and worse coverage. Maybe I'm missing something, but overall T-Mobile is actually very meh.

That's the problem with Verizon. Verizon wants everyone on these Share anything plans under the guise that you can really hide the heavy users under a single shared value split by all users. I pay $100, for 450 minutes and use between 5GB-10GB of data a month. That's a single user. I don't have people to share my load with. It was basically break even before this hike now puts me even with 18GB a month charges. That's not a bad price and I have in maybe 4 years hit 20GB. But not worth it. I think at this point I will get rid of the anxiety and go ProjectFi where I can preset 5GB and not have to worry about wasting money, I'll save $30 a month on average and not worry about the over charging for overages (just the standard data rate).

Ummm 3 lines on T-Mobile you can get 10gb per user for 120 before taxes. That sounds like 3x the amount of data for less money.

Also of note with tmobile and 3 lines:

20gb per user would be 150 before tax
Unlimited would be 180 before tax.

If your someplace where tmo gets good coverage then the prices are way way cheaper then vzn with this hike.

And if you were lucky enough to get on it when it was available like I am I pay 100 per month with unlimited for 2 lines (was available until mid July of this year). That's the same cost as Verizon's grandfathered will be except this also includes talk and text.

I have the family play with T-Mobile. 3 lines for $90, unlimited voice, unlimited text, and 1GB data (each phone). If you go over that, they just slow the connection down, which is ok with me. I can still get emails, and even play a few games if I don't mind a bit of a wait. I'm on WiFi most the time (work and home) so it's rare I even get close to the 1GB limit.
Even better, they have free limited roaming in other countries, so when I was in Canada last year, I still had text and email for no additional costs.

Besides pissing me and a ton of other people off, is there anything preventing Verizon from sending mail/calling every Unlimited customer and saying:

"Dear 1%er,
Effective 01/01/2016, Verizon Wireless will no longer offer unlimited data. The contract Verizon and you signed for service line (xxx)xxx-xxxx expired on 07/14/2012. Since there is no longer a contract between Verizon and the line owner - Verizon Wireless is no longer obligated to provide service for this device.

We value you as a customer and are offering Unlimited Customers a very special offer of 10 GB data at the same price as the Unlimited Plan. Please contact us prior to 01/01/2016 to take advantage of this offer.

If you have not changed the plan prior to 1/1/16, we will no longer provide you service.

Damn. This hits me hard. 4 phones with unlimited data/text bill is $230 a month. Guess Its good I got the Nexus 6 - I may go project fi and transfer other lines elsewhere.

Nothing.. and while I would still be pissed, I would respect them offering me a slightly better plan than what they are. I hover between 4-10gb a month on my unlimited phone. This is going to screw me either out of data or jack my rates way up. As I said, as soon as my wife's phone is out of contract I'll be telling them to get bent. I'll just learn where WiFi hotspots are and use my tablet more.

I'm on AT&T and have unlimited. They use to try and change my plan. Every time I had an upgrade they would try and get to sign with a capped data plan. I told them that my data usage changed based on my work. So, I wasn't interested. On average, I use 9gb a month. The closest plan they have is 15gb of shared mobile data. It's $10 more a month than what I currently have. They can't try and use the line, "We'll save you money." It won't.

I use 23-28g a month, so I will still keep the plan. Dont want to think about how much that would be on a normal tiered plan.

Thank you.

I remember when I first got my OG Motorola Droid with Unlimited Data. Even though the device was capable (for the time) of mobile computing/media consumption, the 3G network was not fast enough to make it seamless. I rarely did more than browse the web on 3G. Performance was fine on WiFi.

Fast forward to my HTC Thunderbolt and 4G. I used the device for significantly more tasks, not because the device was better, but because the network allowed me to.

I average 20-30 GB a month. I could easily cut my 4G usage by using WiFi. I just don't need to and have not just to spite Verizon for dropping the unlimited plan.

On a side note, It doesn't look like my bill will be changing. I'm at $45/mo for "Enterprise Unlimited" + $20/mo tethering.

I understand that Verizon wants to curb high data users - especially those that tether their phone without paying the $20/mo tethering fee. I'm not going to argue with anyone on whether it is contract-kosher to use a 3rd-party app to circumvent the phone home or root their device to eliminate the phone home to tether.

I will argue that I should be allowed to download GTA V over my Unlimited Data ($45/mo) tethered ($20/mo) to my PC.

Seriously Verizon, make us an offer that us 1%ers CANT refuse. 20 GB/mo for $49.99.
Sincerely,
A future T-Mobile customer.

Frankly I would be just as happy being hard locked to 3g if It meant I could keep unlimited for $30/mo. I'm not paying the tether as I only do so infrequently and frankly they can eat a dick for asking $20/mo for that. Especially since I rarely go outside the 4-10gb range..actually on second thought I don't, I've never once gone above 10. That is probably due to the fact that although I have a 4g phone, I rarely get to take advantage of it as I only get 3g at home. Most of the time if I'm out on the road I've found a wifi ap anyhow.

Yes the fcc fines and class action would punt them in the bean bag.

there is some old agreement line that prevents it but that doesn't mean they wont eventually try it.

my guess is in another year or 2 we will see this same price hike again. At least that is how I would push people off unlimited. Then again if I was the ceo of verizon I would have been doing that from the start 10 dollars a year till all the unlimited were gone. All I have to say is at least the plans they offer now go up to 100gb.

I have unlimited data, had it ever since I got a smart phone my first was the Blackberry storm.

They have been trying to get me off this plan for a long time now it seems. I can no longer upgrade and keep the same plan unless I opt to pay full price for the phone. I have actually thought about switching because of that fact alone, as I rarely exceed 1gb a month. (Honestly I don't know how people use so much data on their phone).

Cell phones have gotten absurdly expensive over that past few years. All you sheep who live on their phone make it easy for a company to charge more for their "precious service" and easy to break "smart phones". I miss the days of GSM nokia's and maybe a 40$ bill. I pay more now for my cell phone than I do for TV, which is just sad.

they have tiers up to 100GB but past 30GB they get insane for each 10GB the cost goes up 75 to end at 750 a month for 100GB...

20GB is $120/mo 25GB $175/mo it just seems like Bill Lumburg pulled numbers out of his rear and said yeah lets go with that...

Makes me want to burn 100GB just out of spite but if i do they will claim i'm tethering or some thing and end my service... Which they are able to do as tethering with the workarounds is a violation of the TOS and as a response they can kill your service.

While TWC is shitting a brick right now you have to give kudos to Verizon wireless for having a reliable network and the unlimited data plan is definitely useful for these situations.

Where in my contract does it say they can hike up my plan in less than 30 days notice. I thought the reason for a "Grandfathered" plan was that it was "Grandfathered" and you could not lose it / increase the price.

IF TWC can provide unlimited data, why in the world can verizon not. TO top this off in Europe getting unlimited data is 10lb / 15 euro a month. That comes with unlimited talk.

Bottom Line, USA is getting raped... literally

Nvidia, at the top of the video market, gouges GPU prices for the past 10 years and yet no one bats an eye.

Verizon, at the top of the wireless provider market, raises prices on their services and everyone loses their fucking mind.

OH THE IRONY!

Seriously guys, if you don't like it, go to another provider. Simple as that.

Two different animals there also I dont own nvidia cards for a reason... just sucks that they now make the "best" cards.

also verizon has been sticking it to us for longer than nvidias been around so... also nvidia would be less able to gouge people if they had some decent competition.

Cellular in the us if you want to actually use it you have 2 choices big red or big blue. If your lucky and live in a prime city center and have sprint or tmobile as an option good for you hope you dont mind dead areas if you stray too far from the city centers... where I live tmobile and sprint phones are paper weights for 150 miles around me there is no towers for either company. Only verizon and at&t towers.

You forgot the thing about over a 16% increase they have to let you out of your contract. So the options are pay us more money or gtfo. Those of us already month to month have the options of sign a new contract or stop bitching and pay or gtfo.

the only ones who get this price hike delayed are those who have played the system to extend and renew contracts. If your currently in contract to have unlimited for 29 still you get a reprieve until your contract is up.

Well, looks like this is the time to bail finally. I'm not paying the extra $20. It would push my monthly bill over $100 for one line of service.

Are you getting a percentage off your bill (UP TO 25% OFF) based on where you work? I get 25% off my monthly bill with Verizon based on my employer (?). My UDP bill with Verizon has been $64 a month for years so even with this increase up to $84 a month it's still worth it to have a UDP.

Note: An email address from a participating company works as verification for the 25% off discount. Hint, hint.

I do get a discount of 18%. Right now the cheapest minutes/text is the 450 anytime minutes with unlimited text for $59+$29 for data = $88. With 18% discount = $73 + taxes and nonsense = $83 per month. Adding the $20 with a discount is going to push it closer to $100. I looked to see if I could get a cheaper min/text plan and I can't unless I drop unlimited data.

Actually all of the tiered plans are unlimited talk and text the only thing with limits is data. Somone correct me if im wrong here but looking on Verizon all the minute plans are gone it is all data 2gb to 100gb and all of them do unlimited anytime and text.

It won't let me switch to one of the other minute plans without changing the data plan. So I'm stuck paying a premium for minutes with cheap unlimited data or getting free min and tiered data. Straight talk looking better all the time.

yeah same here i'm on the 1400 anytime with unlimited night and weekends with my friends and family...

my plan has not existed since 2009...

Straight Talk is garbage. They arbitrarily hard cap you and threaten to cancel your service if they think your usage is excessive just based on the area you're in.

What about Page Plus? Probably similar to ST since they're both owned by Tracphone.

Think I'm going to go with the Project fi. I only use about 2 gigs if that of data a month. Right now with just 2 lines with 2 gigs on each I pay 150 a month. I'll have to keep my wife on Verizon she won't go any where else lol but I get 25% off on one line so she can just stay with them. Still bring my bill down about 50 ish a month. Been wanting a nexus phone for a while any way.

I looked at it, but Sprint/T-Mobile coverage is terrible. If Project Fi could get Verizon or ATT instead, I would sign up immediately.
