I suppose the next thing the US Army will be looking for is the Elder Wand and the Sorcerer's Stone. :D The US Army has put out a call to contractors for a working invisibility cloak, workable from all angles, in all terrain and in all weather conditions within the next 18 months.

At the end of the day, any technology that gets commissioned isn't going to allow for total invisibility - instead it'll be compared with existing camouflage patterns.

Throw enough money at something and let's see (or not) what happens...

And I want a Tie fighter to land in my front yard and pick me up and take me off this planet.

All they need to do is study the corpse of the predator arnold killed in the jungle GET TO THE CHOPPA!!! Oh wait it self destructed nm THANKS ANYTIME ANYTIME. You know for an advanced alien race they sure had some fucked up vision lol.

I want to live in a world where war isn't all governments ever think about. Everyone is getting poorer and poorer and these fucks just want more toys to fuck shit up.

The us army and US government is going insane.
Sinking money in crap while the supporting economy keeps being hollowed out.

warfare and welfare are both bankrupting the nation. They should just build a coliseum and be done with it. oh wait those are called stadiums nowadays, nvm.

All they gotta do is surgically alter a Delta operator to look like a Romulan, sneak him on board the Romulan High Command's Flagship, and steal their cloaking device.

Easy.

Hmm Invisibility Cloak huh, well they wanted a super duper aircraft that could do it all and be the most baddass flying and look what we got after 1.5 Trillion dollars and 10+ years of development.

And they want this done within 18 months. LoL they can't even get the F-35 to work as advertised nor the F-22 and they want this.

So can someone please tell me on where all this piles of money is coming from /sarc

They should find out what Romney used in the last weeks of 2012 election

There's a Canadian TV documentary on the F35 and it's quite fascinating the level of corruption around that plane. It fits the JOAT-MON designation (Jack Of All Trades-Master Of None).

I honestly don't think we could do this in 18 years. You'd need a 360 degree camera that could take high res pictures and transmit everything to a processor to find out where to put it on a flexible display. Said display would have to be aware of the orientation of every fold, bend and irregularity as the wearer moved around, so even at low-res any adaptive camouflage would still be awfully hit or miss.

If they're just looking for a "smart" ghillie suit, that might be possible with current technology, have a bunch of photosensitive, color changing "scales" with each taking an average of the color immediately in front of it and sending its information to its opposite on the other side of the wearer. It wouldn't be invisibility, or even "Predator", but it'd be better than the wrong camo color as you move across varied terrain.

Since you don't want it to emit light, you'd have to tap one of the few companies making the color E-Ink displays and see if you could make it flexible (so you don't rattle), and since each patch would be only one "pixel" worth of color it wouldn't take much in the way of processing power... and there are pinhole color sensors you could use. (Basically a low-res, unfocused CCD)

So yeah, depending on what you mean by "invisibility cloak" it's totally doable. Figure each suit would be tens of thousands of dollars at the very least, though.

18 months? Totally doable if they don't mind walking all the way to Lothlorien to visit with Lady Glad Wrap or whatever her name was...though I heard you need like some kinda disposable wizard to tag along if you're planning to go the Mines of Moria route to get there.

Go read up on meta materials, It's already been done at smaller scales. Researches have created synthetic materials that have unique abilities to interact with light. They can even use said materials to bend light around objects, similar to a lens, making that object essentially invisible.

lol keep dreaming. Never ever going to happen.

So what country will manufacture this for us? And then in turn make the cheaper knockoffs for the rest of the world to get and then level the playing field. Then once field tested, you know law enforcement will have to have it to fight the cartels that already have it. And if LEO has the ability to cloak, then there is really no way for an unruly tax payer to step out of line as you would absolutely have no idea to tell if that blur you drove by was refraction from your windshield or a speed trap.

Well, after the wars are over, we'll find something else to go to war over. With all our new toys. If you don't agree with the spending or the wars, you're anti-American.

Yea, war brings in some dollars for a lot of companies. Companies invested in by government officials. So, they can't lose.

Cut NASA funding, but fuck it! We want an invisibility cloak!

So you remember Lothlorien and Moria but not Galadriel? Not buying it... :p

Honestly I think they already have had this technology for a while, I remember watching a show (discovery?) where they were prototyping an invisible suit using fiber optics this was back in the 90's 17-20 years ago. God only knows where they are at with the technology by now.

That episode only came out once and wasn't shown again...at least that I recall.....We looked and looked and can't find the show that aired.

Umm, I don't know, but the mismanaged piles you are talking about were spent by the Air Force, not the Army.

Germanium, if you don't get specific then you don't have anything specific to bitch about.

As long as you wrap everything up under the government's cloak you'll never get around to holding any individual responsible.

If you don't care enough to do something, then nothing will get done.

We have enough to bitch about. If anyone still needs more examples they need their brain scanned for tumors.

We all damn well know where in the government the corruption is, it's in the entire government. Throw a dart.

Such knowledge from a guy yelling how the NSA was doing nothing wrong for years. Trust me, I don't need your advice on anything.

They want invisibility cloaks for naked butt sex, O RLY? 18 months? Pfft....

Obviously been playing too much Crysis.

Why don't we also have self repairing APC's, Walkers, EMP satellites IED's that revive soldiers regardless of what injury the person has sustained, HUDs and Gigantic flying fortresses.

(Cookie for those who can get where that one came from).

Whatever, it's been like at least 4 years since I read those novels and I admit it didn't really suck me in. I was only reading it to connect with someone else who was like a huge fan.

There is no shortage of dumb, expensive ideas floating around...

Like the "let's make a HUMVEE fly" idea.

Seriously, just because after you've thrown enough money at something it may technically be possible, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
