I mainly want to go X99 for the M.2 and DDR4. I have no idea which board to get. I will overclock and I will need good fan control. I usually go with Asus but the X99 boards from them have been getting horrible reviews from users so it concerns me. Not trying to spend a ton of money. I will be picking up a 5820K to OC. Is it better to run 4 sticks of ram or two?

So on a budget I have this so far..

Intel 5820K
Asrock X99 Extreme 4 OR MSI X99S SLI Krait Edition LGA ????
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB KIT (4GBx4) DDR4-2400
SAMSUNG XP941 256gb M.2

I'd honestly go with 2x8GB for the ram now, and then spring for another 2x8GB when you can afford it.

You likely won't ever need 32GB of ram (famous last words), but you are at least preserving one of X99's unique advantages over other mainstream chipsets: memory density. I can promise that you won't notice the difference running in dual channel versus quad AND those higher density ram sticks typically hold value a little bit better than the lower density sticks.

That MSI board also has more phsyical USB 3.0 connectors on the back than the Asrock as well as having an Intel Gigabite nic as opposed to Realtek one on the Asrock. The Asrock is quite a bit cheaper though.....

How much do you want to spend on the board exactly?

Lets say 300ish? I get 40$ off boards at microcenter getting the CPU from there with it. I really had my heart set on the Asus X99 boards for the look and fan control. I just keep reading bad reviews but maybe these are when they first came out? Also where are the 2011 v-3 air coolers at?

I recently put a similar build together and went with the MSI Krait Board, a 5820k and 16GB of Corsair 2666Mgz DDR4. I am cooling with an H100i and have the 5820k at 4.5gHz with minimal setting changes. I have been happy with it, but wish it had one more USB header for Corsair Link on the H80i I am using to cool my video card. Good luck with the build.

I'm also rocking a Krait build. Paid $60 for it at Microcenter in spite of a $175 price on the box. I think they're running specials on it through the end of March.
I need to tinker with the cooling settings (my H110 uses the Hardware Monitor in the BIOS) but it seems to be a quality board, especially for that price.

Your Krait is the z97 right? I was looking at x99. I really want to stay air cooled and I keep using my Phanteks cooler which I read on their site can work with LGA 2011 V-3. It's such an expensive upgrade I am really leaning towards going to a 4790K and Asrock Extreme 6 which I am actually pricing out for another coworker. I can keep my existing cooler for sure and ram. After selling what I have currently it will be a cheap upgrade and I will get to use M.2 X4 which is the main reason I want to upgrade.

The Intel 5930K wil give you 40 PCI-e lanes instead of the 5820K's 28 lanes. The M2 uses PCI-e lanes.

But being single GPU do I need 40 PCIe lanes? Starting to think I my go Z97 Asus Pro and a Plextor M6e. Having a silent PC is a big deal to me and I am in love with Asus Fan Xpert lol.

Why not just wait until skylake at the end of this year?

Btw, first post - chyeah! Takes forever to get activated up in here.

Skylake is way too far out, build one now and build one later :)
If you are in the market now look for a usb 3.1 board Asus has a few popping up and soon there will be a sabertooth version.

Personally, I'd just sit on the 4770k and Z87 board until you see what Intel drops in the mainstream realm with DDR4. Maybe grab a Z97 board for Broadwell support, but even then, there doesn't seem to be any pressing need to upgrade.
