Nexus 6 speculation

Good to see people actually have these and are having good results with custom kernels. I would swear this thing is a unicorn except for the really nice guy at the ATT kiosk who let me look at his personal N6.

Large and in charge, the only way to describe it. Good screen though, some reviews seem to poo-poo the quality, but numbers on a page do not an experience make. Still cant believe the inventory is so limited. I thought waiting for my Nex4 was painful. I was stoked about a cloud white 64 but have yet to see one of those, so maybe it is a unicorn...

Seems like U.S. Carriers are not going out of their way to help push and sell the Nexus 6 ?

I live in the Chicago area, and went to several of the bigger ATT stores around town, as well as called several more. Only 1 out of 10 actually had it in stock, and they only had one in stock to sell. All of them said you need to place an order with them to get a Nexus 6.

And the display in these higher end big ATT stores were a joke for the Nexus 6, each one of them had it pushed off in the dark corner near the LG Flex and Samsung Galaxy Mega and a few of them didn't even have it plugged in

Nexus phones have never really been pushed in stores. Also due to the limited stock its very hard to push a phone

But the nexus 6 is the first Nexus phone that Google is pushing directly on all major U.S. carriers at subsidized pricing. And have displays in stores, etc...

so fedex bro dropped off my N6 earlier today at work. no problems with VZW at all.. popped my nano sim right in, picked up their network in 5 seconds. good to go. i will say coming from an iphone 5S, this thing absolutely flies, god damn. i had all kinds of problems deactivating that iMessage crap, still not sure if i'm getting all my text messages.. but that's no fault of the nexus of course.

probably play with rooting and kernels this coming weekend if i get bored, but i'm super satisfied right now. great phone.

True, but im betting that Samsung and Apple push carriers harder

Connected my fiio e18 to check if usb music connection works, and hallelujah it works seamlessly. This for me was always a huge omission from the nexus line, but I'm happy to say it works now :)

What would you guys say if I were to tell you I was contemplating buying the Nexus 6 with my tax refund to replace a Galaxy S3. I would also like it to be able to be used as an e-reader for text books in a few of my classes while I am in class. At home I would obviously use my computer.

I would say it should work just fine. I've been doing the same with a Note 2 for 2 years. Contact ends in 2 weeks, and unless someone can show me something better (maybe that Asus Zen), I'll have a nexus 6 in that timeframe.

Just got one of these and love it. I went from a z2 - note 3 - z ultra - z3 - note 4 to this. It blows everything else away. Stock lollipop rocks!

Some people would not like to hear that you are calling the Nexus 6 a better phablet than the Note 4. What prompted the switch besides the appeal of stock Android?

Nexus and Note 4 can both take a lesson in battery management from the OnePlus. I could barely squeak 4 hours SOT with my Nexus 6 and about 4.5 hours SOT with my Note 4. Oneplus was consistently around 6 hours SOT.

Nexus 6 and Note 4 are better in every other facet though.

Switched to an iPhone 6+ now and it really is the best combination of everything for a phablet. I have yet to get to the end of the day with any worry about the battery. It is in a different world than any Android phone I have owned in regards to battery.

Part of N6's issue is an unoptimized display driver. Franco spotted it in his kernel development...it is a fix that need to come from Google and it'll automagically boost battery performance.

If true, it would make the Nexus 6 a no brainer as used ones on Swappa have fallen like a rock. I would pick up another if they could improve battery life. The width is somewhat of an issue but it is an awesome phone.

Is it much worse than the Droid Turbo? I've been really pleased with the battery life on mine. GSAM currently thinks it's average is 2d 4.8hr on a charge with 16hr 49m active, 4.5hrs screen time. I haven't made any effort to improve it.

IIRC it is something like an unnecessary 10mA draw just due to the non tweaked driver.

The bigger screen appealed to me. I loved the z ultra but the huge bezels on the ultra made it too big.

The inbuilt wireless charging has converted me. Ill never go back to wired unless its for a quick fast charge.

The true 64GB app storage, the note 4 doesnt compare even if you add a micro sd the note 4 still puts/leaves a chunk (sometimes massive) on the main memory. Put it this way, youll be able to install more big games on a nexus 6 64GB than a note 4 32gb + 128gb micro sd.

Finally as you correctly said, butter smooth stock Android and quick updates. Yes there are some spen features ill miss especially the copy and paste with the spen, but the Nexus 6 is a definite keeper for me.

My security friends would only buy blackberry, apple, and nexus if not just stick with dumb phones. Only those 3 companies/lines of products get security updates promptly if at all.

So what is the final word on the battery life? How many hours would I get if I were using it mostly as a hotspot?

Two weeks with my Nexus 6 and it's absolutely awesome. Running Pure Shamu, unencrypted and this thing flies. 53k in Antutu and silky smooth experience overall. Coming from a Nexus 5 which I was pretty happy with. Was originally concerned with the size but once I received it those worries went away. Yes, its a big phone but not cumbersome. I do have large hands but one hand use can still be a little tricky at times. Build is great and screen and sound are excellent. Highly recommended phone and I really don't see any reason to upgrade this year.

Does anyone know, if I buy the Nexus 6 from At&T instead of google directly, can I root it and install a custom rom or did they lock it down to hell like the rest of their shitware?

The only difference between the ATT N6 and that of anyone else's...is ATT bootsplash, ATT ringtones, and I think you have to pay to get the ATT N6 SIM unlocked....and ofc the ATT trampstamp. Otherwise it is just as rootable, the bootsplash is removable, and it is subject to whatever arbitrary delays ATT chooses to impose on OS update OTAs.

Does anyone know when we will see encryption become optional in the ROM, given Google's backtracking?

You mean in the OTA? As soon as next update maybe. The S6 and M9 don't have encryption on at stock, so it seems either Google has relented or HTC and Sammy don't care.

Well both HTC and Samsung are free to make modifications, so I imagine they (rightly so, in my opinion) chose not to do it in order to save performance. Without hardware acceleration I think the performance impact is too much.

It would be great to see the switch made available in the next release!

Verizon is supposed to stock this start on the 12th and im due for an upgrade. Is this phone still worth getting? Debating between this and the Note 4

Its a tough decision that I think comes down to how much you value the user experience.

Want stock android experience (hardware and software) with fast updates? Nexus hands down. Edit: The update speed might not be the same with a Nexus 6 from Google. Verizon doesn't have the best track history for software updates either. YMMV.

Want a skinned experience but additional features like the S pen? Note is your phone.

Would you say they are both "current" with other phones? I'm leaning towards getting this on Thursday. The note 4 would cost me an extra 50$

Do you want to see something than TouchWiz ever? The VZW Note 4 does not even have SU yet, and forget about an unlocked bootloader...and probably never will be rooted either.

Nexus is a do-whatever-the-fuck-you-want with it device. Note has a few niche features, but honestly for as much as people talk about the S-Pen most never use it (I almost never did when I had one). Also after the Note 4 is more than 6months-to-a-year old, updates will decrease in timeliness and drop off the face of the Earth. And since you're on Verizon and cannot root the device, and certainly will never be able to ROM the device-you are utterly hosed for updates on the Sammy.

Both are awesome phones. I have the N6 and absolutely see no reason to replace it with the S6/M9. If you value S pen and the "productivity" of toucwiz, then the Note 4 is for you. If you like custom ROMS, rooting etc, then its the N6 hands down. Both are awesome phones that serve two different types of people.

Verizon just announced that they will start selling the phone at their stores starting tomorrow, March 12th. Which also might mean that they will finally allow you to activate a new sim card on your Nexus 6, instead of having to activate it on another phone first.

That's only if they have the IMEI of that particular N6 in their database. They will probably have all the Google Play N6's in their DB but I doubt they will have any other Variant (Sprint, T-Mobile, ATT, etc.)

Motorola has been pressing all carriers to load all nexus 6 imei numbers...and not just Play/moto storefront ones. Least they were with sprint.

The nexus 6 is available at vzw. I'm wondering if they bloated it up and locked it down as opposed to the one from google/moto. Someone told me with lollipop they can't put non Uninstaller apps/bloat ware on the phones. Any truth to that?

It's true. But they can (and will I'm sure) do what AT&T does; when you put a Verizon/AT&T SIM card in the phone, it triggers the carrier and phone to involuntarily download the bloatware to the phone. At which point you can still immediately uninstall it again and it shouldn't come back. You'll still be able to unlock the bootloader and root the phone as easy as any other Nexus as well, so it's not any more locked down.
