Obviously this story is in error. Everyone knows Apple products can't be hacked, cracked or otherwise compromised. :D

Owners of iPhones and iPads have been targeted by a hacker who is freezing iOS devices and demanding a ransom of up to £55 to unlock them. It appears that the hacker, who goes by the name Oleg Pliss, has managed to exploit the Find My iPhone feature which can track and remotely lock stolen devices.

So check your crystal ball Steve, who will be the first to hack phones for ransom exploiting the "Kill Switch" feature?

Sounds like the standard "social engineering to get your credentials" scam.

Find My iPhone is great - but you *DO* need to make sure your iCloud password doesn't get compromised. If someone gets your iCloud password, they can lock and even erase every device you have registered with it. It happened to a Wired reporter's laptop a couple years ago.

I doubt it is anything as complicated as "hackers broke in to Apple's back-end systems" and am almost positive it was a simple "they got users' passwords and used the public interface once they had their credentials."

One simple way to find out: Log in to your iCloud, change your password, and declare your phone "found". If your iCloud password doesn't work, then that's the attack. Call Apple to reset.

So Steve you blame Apple now for users reusing passwords on multiple sites and their credentials being stolen in an unrelated incident?

Don't you get that each time you bash Apple, especially when its not called for, you lose a good chunk of your credibility? Seems sad for otherwise such a great site.

Steve do you ever plan on not posting shitty commentary with an Apple headline?

No, no, your wrong. Each time he bashes Apple, a puppy dies. :( (Or, perhaps, most on here do not care except that it is a problem that is being addressed?)

The message is fine; it's the autismal commentary that is added to it.

Wonder how much credibility he started with? Steve has been poking fun at Apple for a good many years now and still holds a ton of credibility so he must have started with a shit ton!

Yeah, I sure as hell get tired of Steve droning on and on about shit we don't care about.

Hey Steve, this isn't 1999-2004, this isn't Hypothermia. You're lucky to be here, don't forget where you came from.

These things all boil down to the security savvyness of the user IMHO. Use a decent, unique password and enable 2-factor authentication.

Also, I don't get why this is a big deal. While I wouldn't WANT my phone to get wiped, I couldn't care less if it did. Nothing is ever stored solely on my phone, and my photos--probably the most irreplaceable things on my phone at any given moment--are sent both to dropbox and google photos with auto-backup. Anything else would just be a minor inconvenience to start from scratch, I wouldn't even pay $5. I wouldn't recommend anyone keeping anything of importance that can't be replaced on their phone, since in addition to phone's being 'hacked', they can easily be lost, stolen, etc.

If you are that sensitive about his little joke, Then you need to quit being a dick. You don't HAVE to to be offended by every little thing just because you can. Steve is a human.

i would think that there would be a warning on apple's side of things, if a bunch of different login ID attempts come from the same source that is not a cellphone of apple store.

If I was Steve I'd pop you for that shitty little comment.

And yeah, as someone who dislikes Apple as a whole, even I get tired of these relatively benign yet clearly anti-apple stories.

So here on [H], we have a tiny corner of the community that just happens to post up "anti" Apple stories to balance the majority of the web where, "Apple is hackproof, Windows/Android is buggy because users give out their passwords, wait what" are in the news every day.

The odd thing is that I have never seen things like that posted on a regular basis. Maybe if you go on a Apple fanboy forum, but a fanboy forum of any brand is never a place for intelligent people.

The story is fine; it's the presentation. I'm surprised Microsoft isn't spelt with a dollar sign.

Perhaps this site would be more to your liking :

iUsers claim iPhone is for the affluent so if they had just paid the ransom instead of being cheap this wouldn't be in the news for Steve to relay and cause the ensuing whining.

Man spike the phone in to the ground. Get it replaced at Apple store for $100. Problem solved. Fuck these hackers.

This Story even hit country radio in Australia and the reporters were commenting how they all were shocked that Apple got hacked and were debating how it could ever happen. I dont get how you think this is an anti Apple story? Yes it is pie in the face for all the smug people who think iOS devices are bulletproof and I even smiled when listening to the reporters who thought that nothing like this could ever happen. This is a wake up call to all the "smug" iOS users (Not all iOS uses are smug) pull your head in its just an operating system, its not bullet proof, Apple is not a religion, it's just a product, people are allowed to NOT like it, You can be cool like Steve Lynch and not use Apple products.

Maybe if Steve stopped trolling us with shitty headlines we wouldn't appear.

:( I keep trying to lose BAD chunks of credibility...instead of all the good chunks of credibility I keep losing.

Yeah, I sure as hell get tired of Steve droning on and on about shit we don't care about.

But not too tired to jump in with a HUGE "don't forget where you came from" message. WAIT...where did I come from??? :D

Maybe if Steve stopped trolling us with shitty headlines we wouldn't appear.

Dude, that actually made me laugh.

ANYHOW, if we've said it once, we've said it a million times....we are a PC enthusiast site, not a Mac / Apple site. We poke fun of everyone (just scroll through the headlines), not just Apple. I do find it funny that when I pick on <insert group> the fans of <insert group> start crying but they all LAUGHED at the jokes about <insert competitor>. Now, all the sudden....15 years later.....they are tired of my droning. :D

Wait so bad things can happen when people have access to your account information and passwords? I for one thank Steve for bringing this to light.

Does the iPhone have an undergarment sensor yet, so it can notify users when their panties are in a bunch?

Steve didn't write the headline or the article...

If anyone is "trolling" you it's The Telegraph.
To be fair, I don't think people are taking issue with the headline or the article. I think they're taking issue with this:
Obviously this story is in error. Everyone knows Apple products can't be hacked, cracked or otherwise compromised. :D

I also grow weary of trollish comments, but clearly it was a facetious comment said with sarcasm, and people are being a bit sensitive. It's just that this whole anti- or pro-Apple (or insert brand here) stuff is so old that it's just...not that funny.

Apple apparently is too stupid to employ multi-factor authentication for their services.

Apple does offer two-step authentication for their services; it's up to the user to enable and use it. Same with google, same with facebook, pretty much same with every service.

Get the hell out of here with your facts. We don't like those!
