Is PC gaming dying?

I'd say it definitely is, I don't think it'll ever be what it was before. Especially with the next-gen consoles finally being able to at least output 64-64 on AAA titles like BF4 regardless of how plagued the launch was.

I have the PS4/XB1 and the PC listed in my sig. As much as I love my PC, I love playing on the consoles too. You just cant beat games like FIFA 14 on consoles when compared to PC where players are almost non-existant in online matchmaking.

I feel like whatever amount of players that are available to play on PC ( whatever game it may be ) its essentially almost 2-3 times that on consoles, which is awesome. Always tons of people playing.

There will always be those retard *MASTER PC RACE* people that claim ILL NEVER PAY $400-$500 FOR A SHIT CONSOLE BRO! ILL BUILD A SICK GAMING PC FOR THAT MUCH , but clearly, they'll never understand.

Consoles have owned sports games since the turn of the century... nothing to see here.

TitanFall sucks, why would i buy it for my pc?

Then why would you buy it for console? People obviously are.

But, I mean.. the PC is still 'superior' to consoles, at the very least control-wise, not to mention the ability to emulate other consoles, etc.

And it will always be the most powerful, so yeah, "master race" seems apt.

Not from where I'm sitting.

Checked Steam's catalog lately?

That's circumstantial. Valve is only worth $2.5B.. that's a small fraction of the gaming industry.

As Titanfall is a spiritual successor to CoD, which has been a console based series for a while, I do not think that is surprising.

PC gaming is thriving more than ever. Why would you think its dying based on an awful game such as titanfall? Microsoft used that as a console seller and it worked.

I really hope it wont become the new COD, isn't the current one bad enough??

Its inevitable that a next gen console will take a lot of the focus.
But look at when the next consoles will be out.
PCs are already way above the capability of consoles, in a few years, the supposedly 1080p consoles will look like a Wii.

Dying, no. Maybe a rough patch, because of lazy developers wanting to quick port so they can cash in on the PC side.

Nobody can find any games in a bundle, Steam sale, or free like Dota 2 and Hearthstone...

Titanfall... who cares, HALO-Gears-Killzone-etc., GTA, and then Zelda, Pokemon don't need PC much or at all.

TitanFall sucks, why would i buy it for my pc?

This.
It also requires Origin and that's another reason not to bother with it IMHO.
I want all my games in Steam. Games that are not offered in Steam get less attention paid to them in my house. If I'm missing out on stuff, so be it. I have plenty of Steam games to play through to keep me occupied. :D

Then why would you buy it for console? People obviously are.

Console gamers are sheep; why wouldn't they buy it? Same reason they always buy every year's iteration of Madden and Call of Duty even though neither franchise has really done much "new" in God knows how long.

PC gaming has been "dying" for nearly 20 years now; I think people would get more attention saying it was "decomposing". :D

I remember about 2 years ago people were getting banned for making threads like this. There was a post stickied by Oldie that said PC gaming is not dying and to stop posting it. I think we need to sticky that post again.

No, but you have to take into account that there are far more people gaming these days, be it casually or through a console.

If you compare Xbox vs. PC, then PC wins, but these days.. there are more people playing Plants vs. Zombies on an iPad than on the PC.. as in, using a 600$ piece of hardware to play a game that any 100$ PC can run.

The sheeple are taking over, and I don't see how we can survive this in the long term. I'm surprised nVidia and AMD are still coming out with new high-end GPUs.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I'm totally on the PC side.

Even if PCs die out, I'll still be here within the last lonely remnants of the once glorious PC master race :)

I didnt like the titanfall beta myself, hated it. But you have to remember that people on xbox one and ps4 have litterally nothing to play right now. That's why those title play well.

While on pc i can still play DayZ mod for arma2.. Theres no generation like console gaming witch render old games use less unless you buy the older one.

Look they are making à port of the last of us for ps4,higher resolution and they will charge 59.99 for it, tons of People are ready to rebuy it at that price because of the lack of software

Agreed on both.

The same could be said about Nintendo making game consoles that solely rely on Nintendo titles to survive.

IMHO NV/AMD have a bigger "niche pool" than Nintendo does.
How long has PCIe been around now? Most PC's have PCIe. If your PC can't run games at your res with decent frames, spend $100-$150 (sweet spot for most people) and it can again. This is an easier "sell" than a $250+ console that requires an entirely new library with entirely new hardware and controllers and subscriptions.

If Steambox could actually take off, I think consoles would be done for.
Problem is, I don't see how any company is going to slap together a Steambox with good enough hardware (beating consoles handily but maintaining the 'console MSRP' line) and stay afloat.

The only other thing (I think) that could save consoles in the future is making them dumb again. 1 purpose and 1 purpose only = playing games. Drop anything else other than a NIC and online service for matchmaking/P2P. I think consoles have gotten overly complicated and playing games is now taking a back seat to all the other features....which leaves me with an even bigger feeling of "why not buy a PC then and hook it up to the TV?"

Sheep? I think not.

Agree to disagree.
IMHO the majority of console gamers have been sheep since the 32-bit era.
Eat it all up, question nothing.
Paying for online play, eating up EA Sports titles, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, even Halo, Gears, and GoW. Just take it, it's good for you. Eat that spoonful of sugar.
Meanwhile what was the last good CoD title = 4:MW. What have they done since then? Jack. What has Madden done since then? Hell, while I'm asking, what has Madden done since Madden '95? Most people say ACII was the best and everything since has been panned. I'm a fan of Halo, I haven't bothered with the series since H3. Love Gears, didn't pick up Judgment. Love GoW, didn't buy Ascension.

Meanwhile little $5 and $10 piddly indie games on PC are kicking ass and upshowing $60+ [HEAVY quote] "AAA" [/HEAVY quote] titles. I've lost track of time playing stuff like FTL. In fact, the last AAA title I can say I honestly enjoyed and felt deserved the 'esteem' of being called 'AAA' was BSI.

Yahtzee's "Extra Punctuation" this week was a perfect virtual braindump of how I feel about AAA gaming.
Excellent quote:
Yahtzee said:
Look at the box art for Titanfall on Google Image Search and you'll see a medal pinned to it boasting that it received over 60 awards at E3. But that would have been when it was in preview form, before anyone had a full picture of the actual game. Sight unseen, the marketers dutifully plaster ads across billboards and along the sides of buses, cutting trailers together from the scripted spectacular moments awkwardly forced into the game, then putting them where they can get the most eyeballs. The media are subtly carrot-and-sticked into providing endless coverage that become more like coverage of hype surrounding a game rather than the game itself. And in more recent years you can add the courting of Let's Players and such figures, those who have been rather coldly and euphemistically named 'influencers' by the businessmen who took notice.

Console Gaming is dieing

Quote - again

PC's are not dying, Console are just becoming PC's

MrGuvernment - the last few years...

I may get flack for this.. but look how big League Of Legends / Dota 2 are alone....PC gaming is what E-Sports is and it is massive right now.. i don't see any console e-sport events...

I really wish Hardforum would just autoban when people create these stupid threads. Seems like every 3-6 months someone feels the need to do so, just to stir up trouble.

Sheeple? Says the guy who only buys games on Steam for some reason? Most of the $5-10 indie games on PC are garbage. Especially the junk that is filling the Steam store right now. Yes, there are a few $5-10 titles that are good, but mindless 2D games is not the way the industry should be going. Many mainstream titles have taken a step back or have stagnated in the pack 7-10 years but 2D indie junk isn't the answer. Real, high quality indie games or publisher backed studios which develop good games are what we should hope for.

Steambox will never kill off consoles because it invalidates the reasons people buy consoles. You may as well buy a PC, unless you hate Windows, FRAPS, and all those other programs we use with our PC games invalidating many of the advantages of the PC platform.

Sheeple? Says the guy who only buys games on Steam for some reason?

Because I prefer the idea and ability to have all games under 1 storefront platform?
So that makes me a sheep? LMAO :D

"The junk filling the Steam store right now", yes, I agree that JUNK is filling the Steam store, because (for some reason) they're putting games made 20 years ago on Steam as a 'rerelease' and putting the development date as [within the last 2 years] like it's a "new game".

I agree that Candy Crush Saga and Flappy Bird shit needs to go, but if you're referring to something like FTL as a "mindless 2D game" and "2D indie junk" then we're done here.

I actually think console gaming will die before pc.

What we have now on consoles is big budget first person games (mainly shooters) and sports. Other genres on consoles are dieing fast.

Cost of consoles has skyrocketed as well as accessories for those consoles.

PC gaming has steam (although owner of steam seems intent on destroying it by trying to release steam consoles). Games that are strong on the PC are still strong, RTS and MMO.

My prediction is portable gaming will eat into console not pc, console and portable gaming is mostly made up of casual gamers. They fighting for the same market share. In japan big consoles are on death's door. 90% of japanese games are made exclusively for portable devices now. Companies like square enix also shifting focus to portable devices.

What the fuck is this thread?
And Titanfall being the reasoning behind it.... Titanfall isn't selling because its not that great.
It was made to sell Xbox one's, not PC versions. Why would PC gamers care? You didn't think at all about this?
Those number's don't mean shit about PC gaming. smh...

Lol, titanfall... the only reason anyone even knows about that piece of shit game is because of the gobs of money that was thrown away in desperate marketing.

But yes, pc gaming is on a slow decline. Is it the end of the world? Probably not.

PC gamers are smart enough to pirate or wait for a sale, especially for a shitty game like Titanfall..

I have a huge backlog of games on the PC that I still want to eventually play. I have maybe 1 or 2 games on console that I might want to play.

I don't think PC gaming is dying...not from my perspective, anyway. And there is still more to look forward to in the future.

Using a massively-hyped, attempted console-seller like Titanfall is not good evidence.

It would be a bad news. Because no mouse and keyboard and it's bye for me for the fps.

FTL is pretty shit. As are majority of indy games ppl go gaga for. If thats what I built a gaming rig for, i wasted my money.

The Xbox One currently has 148 games, 17 are exclusives. I have more games than that in my Steam library. PC gamers, having more options, are probably playing other games.

Titanfall really doesn't seem too enthralling and there are plenty of other active FPS games on PC since the servers are typically player-owned and don't get shut down until the game just becomes terribly unpopular (could be decades!).

I've never played FTL but there are some decent indie games out there. Sometimes it's a nice change of pace from playing big-budget games.

Still got your WRX?

PC gamers do not need 50% of the game to play itself which is one of the big complaints with titan fall. half the players are bots. So they aren't that interested in titanfall honestly. I don't own titanfall and have no plans to buy this paymium game. It just like COD was really designed around consoles so go figure it sells more there.

I'm sorry but you are just wrong. PC gaming is stronger than ever , sales prove that. Hardware sales are amazing enough for Nvidia/AMD to introduce $3,000 GPU's and 4k monitors are set to change PC gaming in a way that current "next gen" consoles can't even touch. Neither console can even hope to push 4k resolution and yet again for years and years PC gamers will have 4k gaming locked down and the difference between the two is immediately obvious (I've personally played games in 4k , its incredible we just need the frame rate to hit a solid 60 fps with a single card solution for under $700). More and more people this generation are building gaming PC's over buying next gen consoles as well.

If anything I would say the home console industry is dying. Both next gen consoles are only slightly different in specs (enough for one to run 720p almost always and enough for one to run 1080p frequently). Console gaming is moving to the mobile space , its happening right in front of us all. 10 years from now console manufacturers will not be looking to launch new platforms , they will instead likely be consolidating to a singular platform to save on manufacturing costs. PC's will continue to become more and more proprietary if anything but not entirely in that time window. Its also possible both platforms will end up merging because technology has made it less profitable for manufacturers to develop their own proprietary solutions costing billions of dollars.

Right now if the current trend continues gaming will be moving to VR and the horsepower to drive two 2.5k low persistence OLED screens is well beyond either the PS4 or Xbox One certainly. Instead they will get dumbed down versions (with the Xbox One being very low resolution to run well) that will be quite inferior to the PC version.

I just can't see how someone could even logically think PC gaming is in a position that would indicate its incoming death..

HALF LIFE 3 + TF3 + CS(?) = YOU ARE OUR ONLY HOPE!

(I know it will never happen...but let me have this dream damnit!)
