Hey guys,

So after a little bit of research, Verizon Fios has insane upload and download speeds compared to the crap im using.

Im on Charter Communcations cable internet. Its 50megs down and barely 4megs up. Just barely.

Basically, I stream a bunch of stuff and it kills it for me. What are my options if they don't have Verizon Fios where am I at right now in Los Angeles.

Am I stuck with Charter here in Glendale/Burbank area ?

Move to an area with FIOs.

Or upgrade to business grade internet and see if that increases your upload.

Charter's Business internet isn't much better. Upload speed wise.

Well, moving is out of the question obviously but thanks.

Didn't even know charter offered business grade internet but klank, thanks for the heads up. Not worth it with charter I guess?

It is if you want static IPs, but as for upload speed your kinda stuck. The offer the following speeds. Sure it is a little bit better than what you have now, but you'll pay through the nose for the business packages especially the 80 and 100.

60/4
80/5
100/7

Holy crap that's a bunch of garbage. Im getting barely 3.7 to 4megs up right now.

100/7 is terrible. Wow man, charter is garbage.

Verizon Fios has a 50down/25up package that's amazing but its too bad I cant get it :(

You can get faster, just depends on how much you want to spend.

True, though it is silly that there are no options for stuff like that. It's all FDM so one would think we could request the bandwidth be split however we want haha but that's just a dream.

Basically the best part of being in Japan is that everything is fiber at least to the building so upload speeds are usually crazy high. My uploads usually are faster than my downloads haha

Do you live near an area that does offer higher uploads? You could maybe setup a point to point microwave link with someone in exchange for paying half their bill or something. :D

I find internet is so behind though, by today's standard 100/100 should be standard internet speeds. I'm just glad we got FTTH here last summer, so we got pretty lucky here. I get 50/30. Can go higher but then there's a cap.

What do you mean by stream? Do you mean streaming while at home or streaming from home when away? If it's at home, then your upload speed is not a limiting factor, and 50Mb/s is plenty to stream multiple HD feeds.

We have charter business at work in burbank, and it's ok when it's up. Our 50/5 line tests at around 80/5.2 but I have connection issues frequently.

LOL, I wish. I'd love to have a decent internet setup hear. Looks more and more unlikely now. Sucks assssssss.

QOS/Traffic shaping?

No idea what that is???

By stream I mean streaming gameplay on twitch.tv or any other service along with multiple users at home using Netflix and browsing the internet. It can't handle it at all with my connection.

If im playing cs with no one doing anything at all and my ping in the server is a constant 25-40, turning on streaming with a bitrate of 2500k immediately jumps up to 95-105 rendering the game unplayable at a competitive level.

Sucks ass, I want to be able to do it all normally without worries, just like all the Verizon fios guys do :(

You have a different issue and its not the speed of the connection.

I have a 25/5 connection and i can have two netflix streams, laptop browsing web and play a game on my desktop with no connection issues.

What kind of router do you have on the network?

I don't think its a different issue at all man. Its the live game streaming im doing that's murdering my connection speeds. My desktop im using for my game streaming is directly connected.

I've had the same speeds you've had with no issues at all in the past. Just a little faster down now. If im not streaming my game live, we can have 2 people using Netflix / 1 person doing online gaming and another surfing the web with zero lag what so ever on any device. It's super fast.

Its the live game streaming that kills it. Im guessing I need a solid, at least 8-10 megs UP (which I barely get 3-4 if im lucky) for HD streaming of my gaming live for it to work with zero lag/effect on my gaming or other devices while I stream.

This is the router im using as of last week,

paid $95 for it brand new at a local Fry's. Absolutely love it. Everything wireless is much faster now upstairs and downstairs with this thing. Much better than the ASUS RT-N56U it just replaced that I had for a couple of years.

Have you analyzed your connection with something like cacti to see if you actually are maxing out your speeds?

4 Megs should actually be enough for streaming. Maybe your line is saturated by other users in your area?
I have Comcast and moved to their lowest tier Business class internet and while it's only 16/3, I have zero problems streaming NetFlix/Hulu while surfing, playing games, etc. on other devices.

Did you try one of those Internet Speed testing sites to see if you're really getting 4megs up?

No I cant say I have. I just run a simple test on speedtest.net to see what its at. Upload speeds with my provider here, for lack of a better word, is shit.

Just ran this test now, took a pic off the screen with my cell:

It swings up and down a lot, really annoying stuff by this ISP. Wish I had options like Fio's here. Would eliminate this problem completely for the same price and be a lot quicker.

Long story short, you need really good upload speeds to be able to stream in HD, not effect your own online gaming and not effect anyone elses stuff they are doing on your network.

****************** NO IDEA why the pic is sooo huge , my bad ************************

4 Megs up is ok for low to regular quality live game streaming, not HD recording and being able to do everything else with zero effect on them.

I think you are confusing what im saying with streaming, as in streaming Netflix or other stuff like youtube. That's not what im talking about. That stuff is stupid fast regardless of whats going on with the network UNLESS im streaming my own gameplay live. Im talking about recording your own gameplay live ( via twitch.tv ) in HD.

So you are uploading your live gameplay to twitch.tv while playing a game, and then there are other people in the house using the internet to stream downloads like Netflix correct?

If that's the case then yes your upload is going to be the limiting factor, however if it is properly managed you shouldn't have an issue doing the above.

Like stated having proper QOS going is what it will take to share the bandwidth without causing delays.

You need to give the games UDP traffic the highest priority so that when two packets need to be sent at the same time, the games packets will always come first. This is how you can maintain those lower ping times while doing other things on the connection. Second would have to be the stream to twitch because if it's a live stream it is also time sensitive. Netflix can be lower priority but still needs to be above regular traffic. The buffer can help smooth out the stream but it's still going to be sensitive to someone downloading a file and hogging the bandwidth. All of that is easier said than done though. I've found QOS to be the hardest thing to implement on a network. Using wired is going to be an absolute must to get consistent connections for your gaming and twitch streaming. Other users can possible use it for Netflix but wired is always better when possible.

Do you have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem? This can make a huge difference if they have upstream channel bonding turned on. It provides more available bandwidth so you'll see less fluctuations if other users on the node are uploading.

EDIT: Just looked through the manual for the C7 and unfortunately it doesn't do QoS. It has a bandwidth limiting function but it can't prioritize packets which is crucial to effectively utilize all of the bandwidth on the connection.

They are not the same, the / was to mean and/or. Basically, with lets say QOS setup, which stands for quality of service, you can then prioritize/limit certain apps/protocols, etc.

I would venture a guess that your connect is asymetrical, so limit your dl/ul, and you will be happier.

Broseph, show us your speed with the link they provide:

You can also do a screen shot of your whole screen using the print screen key and then paste to your fav image app, or use alt+print screen for the active window. If you use dropbox, it will save these images automatically in a screenshots folder.

Dude, that is all you can get in Burbank? That sucks.

I can get 500D 250U in Covina. I currently have 150D 75U.

Don't feel too bad. My in laws live in San Marino, and all they can get is a 3mb DSL line. Fucking worthless.

How about Cox cable Premier package 50/10 or ultimate 100/20. You can also wait to see if TWC actually comes through with their upgrades, Extreme 200/20 or Ultimate 300/20.

You do realize that your posted speeds are pretty in line with what most cable companies offer? You can call them and see what "Non Package" speeds they can give you. I know charter in my work area is like 80/10 or something like that.

Yup, it sucks :/. I'd fucking hulk rage if I was limited to 3megs. That's fucking crazy man, insane speeds you get. Jealous lol.

Don't think I can even get Cox in this area, will have to check. I think charter fucking owns everything around here.

Yes I do realize that, upload is shit everywhere apparently unless you have fios/fiber optics.

I just got off the phone with charter.....fucking garbage! Either the $54 a month package with 30 megs down / 5 max up or fucking $118 a month for 100 down and still 5 megs up! Unbelievable ! No such thing as 'non-package' deals. I tried everything.

Apparently by the end of the year 'EVERYONE' is getting bumped up to 60 megs a second by default for the same price. Who knows what'll happen to the upload by then. Jesus Christ.

Most areas are live with the new 60meg package. The upload is 4meg. What I posted earlier is their current offerings.

Is it just me or does OP have some serious roid rage? I have never seen someone so upset about their upload speeds, especially when they have not even monitored the connection to see if it truely is a bandwidth issue.

If you have that much going on, maybe you should look into a higher class firewall, like a Sonicwall NSA 220 or something.

Step 1) Locate your actual issue, is it the limited bandwidth, or is it a bottlenect on your firewall.

What garbage.....

Try living off 10/1...and I run an entire business off of it ;)

You need a router with QOS to prioritize your gaming traffic. This will keep your ping as low as before even with streaming.
