Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

It's there for very few of us to explore. Once a system is found that's the end of exploration for all other players for that system. If someone joins the game 2 weeks after launch they won't get to find new systems at all.

you have any sources for that 2 week number or is that completely out of your ass? id like to hope it's more, but with the user base of this game and how intensely i know they will be exploring when it first comes out, that unfortunately might be a realistic number. :/

Wow that is a pretty far push back on the release date from originally saying it would be out end of 2013. . . What happened?

Here's the official letter if you're curious:

DFM Letter

My personal opinion is that they thought they needed to get this part of the game out ASAP to help the project along with credibility, hype and finances. When that no longer became mandatory, they decided not to waste the effort on something they would not ultimately use much of. Seems completely reasonable to me.

I expect further delays as well. I can't recall the last time a game I was following had no delays in production and never really got myself "worried", "concerned" or anything of the sort after the first several times it happened. It's been that way for decades and like it or not; it's part of the industry.

As I've written before, this whole thing could still crash and burn but I don't think that's going to happen and have bet pretty heavily on that outcome.

As a software developer, the reasoning behind the DFM delay makes sense.

Personally, I'm not wanting to dump lots of cash into SC ATM. That said, it's fun to be part of the community leading up to the release of a game (I haven't done this in years), so I figured that the $40 gets me a ship, the full game, and access to the alpha and the beta. That seemed like something I was willing to shell out for.

Transport ships costing $750 in game? That will end well

I definitely consider EVE P2W in many regards, and in some ways, I've made peace with this. For those of you who don't know, you can pay for your EVE game time with in-game currency. However, the economics behind this are sketchy since, taking the ISK-USD conversion into account, it costs roughly twice as much to pay for your game time with in-game currency as it does to just shell out for a yearly subscription. I jumped on Amazon's holiday sale and added a year of game time to all three of my accounts for under $300. Had I paid with in-game currency, it would have been something like $700+

That leaves me free to spend my in-game currency on in-game stuff :)

It's based off of assumptions, he just forgot to use the words "in my opinion" ;)

you just said youre upset that he doesnt want to release a crappy product and disappoint everyone and generate ill will toward this product. i fail to see the problem.

So, you're saying CR's initial plan was wrong? Given that's what he was planning anyway. ;)

I'm not overly stressed about not having the DFM... but a promise broken is a promise broken and that always worries me.

So would people be interested if I offered a ship rental service? I have a dozen ships with LTI and I know I won't be flying all of them all the time, not even with all the NPCs I have so I may as well put them to work for people who might want to try flying a different ship once in a while or for people who simply don't have one. Up front fees collected from this would go towards covering fuel, ammo expenses and repairs plus maybe a small 3-5% of any profits made while using the ship which would go to the organization/guild bank.

I can see some issues though, like smart asses destroying the ship on purpose but that'd just mean a nice bounty would be put on their heads lol (or I'd just kill camp them myself). I'm also open to form partnerships with people looking to do the same, PM me if interested.

LOL, for that ship you can rent a spot among my full crew of NPCs. ;) But should've made clear, only the smaller ships would be for rent. Hell it might be pretty profitable for a group of people to pool together their UEC, rent say a Constellation or Banu MM and run missions with 'em. You'd probably make more with a ship like that than with a single seater...

It's similar to what I used to do when I played WoW. We'd sell raid spots for people willing to pay and if they wanted any loot they'd also have to pay but only if the loot was not needed/wanted by a guild member and would be disenchanted. We also did achievement runs, they'd pay us to have one of us log into their character and play them in our raids to get them achievements like the no death ones, or to get them mounts, etc. Made a shit ton of gold that way.

Are you going to be able to do that though? I mean like just "give" a ship to someone and they can take off with it?

I Would think they would see this as kind of exploiting if people that have bought multiple ships and could spawn all their ships at once and give them to friends to fly around in while that person that owns it is flying antoher ship, etc.

I would think they'd only allow you to have one ship that you own at a time outside this "AI wingman" they've mentioned (Which imo I hope they don't do).

supposedly you can give people access to your hangar.

you can give away or trade ships in game too.

there will even be a guild hangar, and id be willing to be that depending on your rank in the guild you can set access levels to ships in the guild hangar, like Auroras could be set for recruits to fly, 300i to full members and connies for officers or what ever.

so an officer could log in and take a guild connie out for a spin

Lending/renting ships is a planned feature yes. There will also be guild hangars that can be filled with ships by guild owners to lend out to its members. We will also be able to have multiple AI wingmen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eachhnl0gis)

Edit: B10

Edit2: I remember on an old WMH episode them talking about having a timer after which the ship is returned to the owner's hangar or something similar but they hadn't worked out the details.

2 week number is completely out of my ass, but I use people beating MMO end-game content in days after release as my measuring stick. As a sweeping generalization players consume content orders of magnitude faster than devs ever intended or thought possible.

There's a finite number of systems and there will be people who will be able to dedicate 23 hours per day to do nothing but exploring to get "world's first" or whatever it will be called.

The only way to slow that down is if coordinates to newly discovered systems cannot be shared and you have to be in fleet with someone who has the coordinate to get there. That may artificially slow the progression down a bit but still, ultimately the exploring part will not be viable unless they keep introducing new things to find.

i might want to rent out some of your ships lorien.

on a totally unrelated note

So lets say, hypotheticaly of course, that some one wanted to rent a ship from lorien and then go murder a bunch of people. would that "hypothetical" person take full responsibility for the actions or would some of it fall on the person renting out the ship?

Oh, I would hope it be the owner of the ship. Imagine the possibilities!
Renting out ships to people who want to [strike=]indulge in a little murder[/s] return videotapes from time to time. Or to [strike=]hitmen[/s] people who want to return video tapes past their due date who don't want to attract attention to their actions. My fees would obviously be higher accounting for the fact that I'd have pay off or hire people to [strike=]kill any bounty hunters on my tail[/s] recycle all these late video tapes to avoid late fees and penalties.
Oh!, maybe I could use myself as bait and broadcast I'm going to be in any random system so that bounty hunters flock to my location and having them [strike=]become targets of my service[/s] take all these past due video tapes. Clients would have a guaranteed [strike=]target to murder instead of any random player[/s] person who'd take their late video tapes and the rep hit would again go against me not the person flying the ship. I'd have a literal army that would pay me to let them [strike=]murder people[/s] return video tapes for me.

So if anyone ever feels the need to return some video tapes, don't hesitate in contacting my service.

Don't forget to hire my salvaging service to clean up all the [strike=]bits of other ships[/s] video tapes that are dropped when collected.

And if your thinking of running off with one of lorien's tapes just remember ill be there to collect the "LATE FEES!!"

I have been jumping on the site from time to time, downloaded the hangar module but have a yet to really see anything to warrant my kick-starter investment, does anyone else wish there was some more in-depth gameplay videos? Are there any new combat videos or teaser? Sadly I feel by the time this comes it out I wont interested anymore...

I'm not really sure what you were expecting when you funded an undeveloped game... it's not going to magically just "poof" into existence just because people gave them a bunch of money. Game development takes time, and frankly the two year timeline that was originally promised seemed highly optimistic at the time, and doubly so now.

I suppose it would be nice to see a little bit on how the planetside module is coming along, but they just showed off real time game play footage of the dog fighting module, and it looked pretty good though obviously not really ready for release quite yet, even at an alpha stage. The fact that they were surprised that the server ran for for about 30 minutes or so before crashing is a good indicator that it's just not ready for us yet.

This is the year that they promised we'd start seeing stuff, now delayed a few months because of the DFM, but after that we should hopefully get something interesting every about one and a half months. We are looking at the DFM April/March (not solid), the Planet Side/Social Module (probably now delayed) a few months later and then we get to the meat and bones when we start with the Squadron 42 Alpha/Beta with Hangar updates in between and new stuff being added to prior Modules. The Star Citizen side of things (alpha and then beta) won't be opening up, optimistically until early fall. The modules are the mile stones, with small updates in between of content, delays like with the DFM was not to be unexpected considering it is Chris Roberts at the helm, but thankfully we have his brother around to bring him inline.

just becasue the DFM was delayed doesnt mean that there other modules will be delayed.
I believe there are different studios working on the planet side, boarding, and S42 modules (individually) so the DFM getting delayed shouldn't even factor in to the overall equation. since they are not going to wast time releasing a placeholder DFM the other modules may actualy come out sooner.

Same, I paid my $10 way over a month ago, and forgot all about it, now I remembered. Thanks!

Is this for all backers or just the veteran ones?

I am not a veteran backer, but I e-mailed since I missed the poll cause I was out of town. Sometimes you can just e-mail and request to be added to the list.
