Hi everyone! First I am really new at this. I am doing my first computer build and am trying to make a fairly decent gaming box.

So I was looking at the ASROCK 990fx killer MB and it says it has a m.2 socket. In the picture it looks like it is between the PCI slots. I googled m.2 socket etc and used the search on here but I am still not sure what the m.2 socket is.

What is the m.2 socket for? I tried to find SSD that would fit but used on ebay was like $270.

What is gain by using this?

Thanks for any help!
Bill

ASRock’s motherboard is the world’s first and only motherboard that implements a Gen2 x2 M.2 socket. The onboard M.2 socket is a new interface for connecting Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF) solid state drives or other devices with a smaller and more flexible physical specification, together with more advanced features.

Forget about it.

Does that mean it is just a gimmick? What is the premise behind it?

Small form factor SSDs which don't need power and data cables - takes up less space and makes your build look neater if you use them.

They're generally more expensive than regular SATA SSDs - not worth it to most people, it would seem, unless you really have a need for one.

That makes sense. I dont have any real needs at the moment as I am attempting my first build. I just saw this board with this, I would call, effective marketing aimed towards sucking me in:)

Thanks for the replies!
Bill
