Good current arena shooters or regular (non-team) DM FPS?

It seems like every game that anyone plays right now is teams. I just want an arena style deathmatch game where you kill anything that moves. Is that too much to ask? Are there any good ones that people actually play?

Nothing except Quake Live, sorry.

Rise of the Triad had potential but it kind of launched with TERRIBLE net code, no bright skins, etc. It died quicker than DNF.

Hawken has tons of built in latency. Like 250ms or something. At least my mechs did. Great if you have reactions of a snail or something.

UT2004 has been dead for many years. The current community is just a bunch of lame fucks playing shit maps. QuakeWorld is much healthier. No kidding.

So... Quake Live, or TF2. That's about it.

Wrong.

Quake Live sucks btw, Quake 3 Arena is so much better. I agree with you on Rise of the Triad, that game was terrible. For some reason it just didn't feel right at all.

Care to elaborate? I've been playing Quake 3 since the first beta. Apart from fixed physics and balanced weapons (also completely fucked spawns - Aerowalk is extremely annoying now, and I love the map), the game is pretty much the same. Oh yeah, LG lock is also gone.

OP , check out

Tribes Ascend. Its pretty fun. Of course its team based, but its pretty fast paced. It reminded me of the golden years of FPS games to an extent.

Uhh no it's not fun, I think OP would rather pick lint out of his navel then play Tribes. He already stated he does not want a team based FPS.

I would probably go with Quake Live and Warsow, although I have not logged into Warsow in ages. I wouldn't know the state of Warsow's online community.

I think the only one I know is quakelive, and this is a very good game. The only populated game with a style that you ask for.
Tribes ascend is team only. Ut2004 have no players. Ut3 either.

There is hawken too.

UT2k4 (does have players)
Quake Live (also has players)
Warsow (fairly dead, but fun)

Last I checked it was 99% instagib and maybe a duel if you have the patience to wait for someone.

There's TDM, DM, and CTF constantly going. Only a few servers though. Lots of Clan Arena from what i've seen.

Nothing is out there at all that you haven't played yet is my guess. What I suggest you do, and I did myself when I had a similar time where I was bored was go back and sort of check out games of the genre that may have been less popular. Or simply go back and check out ones that you never did get to play. But don't just go into the game and say this sucks and leave, give it a real shot, at least 1 month per game. It will open your eyes up and let you be more critical of games and recognize each one for it's strength and weakness. Try to get good at each one and compete. Before you know it a year will have passed and something else might actually be out . List the games you have played and I will make some suggestions on others that are unique you should try.

On a side note you could play tribes ascend, all people do is death match in the CTF servers anyway.

This game is fun as hell! Just because you had a bad experience doesn't make it a bad game. Really though if you want frantic arena style experience, this is the next best thing to UT or Quake.

I agree Tribes was really fun, however, the OP stated he was looking for straight up DM without being team based and Tribes is definitely team based. If the OP is like me, he craves DM that everyone starts out exactly the same, with no heavy class, light class, etc. If that's the case Tribes, while a great game, just doesn't fit the bill.

What I did, because I too love straight up DM games, is got a bunch of friends together every month for a LAN party. Doesn't matter how old the games are, or if they have people on the servers online, you can just setup your own LAN server and play what you want. We've been playing UT/UT2004/UT3, FEAR Combat and CoD4 in old school mode. All great for that old time DM feel :)

BTW, since you mentioned arena style, the map Morbias Station for UT3 is a rocket arena style map and tons of fun!

I'd wager Warsow is the best thing after UT or Quake for an arena style experience, sadly the servers are seldom populated. And as many have said he is not in search of a team based FPS so Tribes is out.

@ Zinn,

- For a fast paced classic arena FPS, you best bet is Quake Live. The game requires skill though;
- For a modern FPS, Blacklight Retribution might be what you are looking for. However, I do not know how grindy the game can be considering the game follows a F2P business model;
- For a Mech FPS, Hawken isn't bad but many find the game quicky becomes boring.

All of these titles are free.

You are aware that not only the servers for Nexuiz are dead, but the game was removed from the Steam Store after the THQ debacle, right?
If I knew that I wouldn't have posted it. I don't play the game but I "supposedly" own it on Steam.

Edit: Just found this on their FB page dated July 30th.
Thank you everyone that alerted us to Nexuiz being removed from the Steam store. We believe this is related to the liquidation of THQ assets. We hope these are the final stages of THQ's grasp on Nexuiz. Hopefully we'll have full control over the title and can do whatever we want with it again soon. At that point, we are going to try to do something special for the Steam version of Nexuiz and get it back up. There are still no plans to get Nexuiz back on XBLA.

Thanks again and hopefully we'll have more information soon! I know some of you are mad about this situation. So are we, but we will try to get this game back up and running smoothly for you soon. Right now we just can't put down the costs to maintain the game when we've never received a penny on royalties due to the THQ bankruptcy. Once THQ is completely out of the picture, we'll have more freedom to do what we can to really help.

Quake Live was the last one I played regularly, and I still enjoyed it. I believe you can go through a training program to help match you with other players of similar skill level. It was quick to download and get into, so it's worth a try I think.

.....And everything in your post has already been mentioned,

Thanks for the recommendations. So basically there haven't been any decent non-F2P arena shooters for years. Wow. That's fine, I'm going to try Quake Live out now.

UT2004 is all instagib on weird gravity servers with stupid custom maps. I have no idea why anyone likes that shit. The stock maps were way better >_<

Reading this thread made me go re-install Q3A. My god what a blast that was. I had forgotten how much fun DM was! Why have games steadily drifted away from this style?
