plot thickens :) DELL 3440x1440 ultra wide 34" 21:9 screen

If this monitor ends up G-Sync capable then I'm in. 4K is too much even for SLI Titans. This resolution would be perfect for them, as its only 30% more demanding than 2560. Then maybe I'd even try 2560+3440+2560 on low settings since all I'd need is another 2713HM.

You guys talking about returning your 29" monitors may want to wait and see when this monitor comes out. It could be many months and even then we don't know if its any good quality wise. And then there is the whole issue of game support. Way too early to go getting excited if you ask me. It is interesting info though. I'll be keeping my eye on it.

I wonder if Eyefinity would work with one of these and a pair of 27" 1440p, one flanking each side?

I just had a killer thought:

7 monitors in 2 rows, 4x2560 1440p above, 3x3440 1440p below

It doesn't line up *PERFECTLY* but it's darn close!

wow lol I didn't see that coming. This suggests dell et al are actually moving units on these ultra wide screen deals.

I have the AOC 29" and I love it except for the AG coating...they need to make a glossy version of every monitor IMO. I do not see a need to jump on this new monitor unless it is in 3-4 years and I can run games reasonably with 1 GPU. Most games should scale well as many of them are Hor+. I have not had much trouble getting games to support it. Movies do look incredible with no black bars! Always hated how we had widescreen TVs and monitors but movies still put bars up.

The only thing I worry about with a 34" monitor is how far back I would have to sit.

I am hoping that it has the same vertical height as a 27" 2560x1400.

I have good news for you:

The 34" 21:9 is 13.39" in vertical height
The 27" 16:9 is 13.24" in vertical height

Width: 31.25" vs 23.53"
Area : 418.55 (sq inches) vs 311.50 (sq inches)

That is PC as hell, that's like Quake 2 on a 1600x1200 21" CRT level of pro. Eyefinity is too much of a cobbled-together solution, it's great but it's not this.

This is the way it should be.

But how do games play on it? That would be my question.

Good? That would be my answer.

Max out one high end GPU without resorting to Eyefinity levels of strain. Adequately accommodate peripheral vision without going overboard. I keep measuring it in front of me and it's perfect. Similar to what I did with my projection screen behind my desk.

Well, I guess I should clarify my question a bit more. Is the resolution widely supported by games? If so then I might be able to get into a monitor like this.

21:9 usually has the same issues as eyefinity, so some games won't work right. Most new games do, but even stuff like Skyrim and Mass Effect games have hud problems on 21:9. For some of these games you can get fixes.

Thanks for the picture.

I've been wanting to jump onto the Eyefinity bandwagon for some time but certain aspects such as price, desk space, GPU horse power always deterred me form going ahead.

Now, while I was all set for a 4K screen next year to replace my current 27" 1440p screen, I soon realised for gaming that this 21:9 screen would give me far better immersion than a 4K screen and somewhat close to a 3 screen eyefinity setup, relatively speaking.

We have the current 1080p 21:9 Dells in the office and while they are nice, the vertical is far too small in height. This new Dell 3440x1440 fixes that. The only thing that can screw this new monitor up is input lag/ or pixel response for gaming. However, I remain hopeful.

:D

Wow, so excited to see this. I have 3x 24" displays running in surround right now but it's a big space investment even though I have them all on monitor arms. This would be the perfect "compromise".

I'm also hoping that input lag/response time will be good enough for gaming. It will also need to be PWM free for me to consider it.

Really hoping the stars align on this one :)

I'm doubting that the lag/response time will be good for gaming based on current market offerings.

Yeah that was my understanding too. I know some are worried about lag and response time but I also worry about getting games to play right on this resolution. Just have to wait and see what happens I suppose.

I don't get it. Isn't this the 2560*1080 version? And isn't it 29" and not 34"? Or is this some new monitor I'm not familiar with?

Perfectly happy with my IPS Glossy 1440P Korean monitor. I am waiting for next gen true 120hz low lag displays that are IPS. That is my next purchase. Not till then.

The dell 29" is one of the worst 21:9 monitors for gaming due to the high input lag and slow pixel response times, I would not get very excited for this especially since most of the newer Dell monitors (U2x13H, 3014, S Series, latest U2713HM revision) suffer from very obvious overshoot ghosting.

If the 34" is indeed the same height as a 23" monitor like the 29" monitors are then the 27" 1440p (especially the overclock-able models) are still are better option for gaming if one wants to fill their field of view from 2-3ft viewing distances. Like the 29", the 34" is too short while 31.5-32" displays with 16:9 aspect ratios are perfect.

Always leaving out the reasons people buy these...

The 34" ultrawide is the same height as a 27" 16:9 monitor. It's also the same pixel density, which is nice for office use.

Jumping up to 4K 16:9 you basically need OS scaling support until you get to 45" or bigger, at which point it's close to "standard" pixel density and so no special treatment is necessary.

This picture must be of the 29" then

But seriously, with the LG ultrawide having some pretty decent response times, I hold a small glimmer of hope for this one

no, it's not a 29", it's a 34", here's a modified pic to bring things into perspective.

i have the U2913WM and like it, but i am missing the vertical space, so i'm anxiously waiting for this thing to come out, at least to see the price tag on it.

btw. here's the original thread, where all the pics come from.
