omg what happened to the memory prices ?

Ram prices shot through the roof.

I bought my ddr3 2000 8gb 2x4gb for like 89$. That was nearly 2 years ago now. Same memory now is 84$.

I was going to pick up another set of it. Seems the price creeped up to what it was when I originally bought it. Oh well not a pressing issue.

Just hope it gets cheaper soon. I need memory for my FM2+ build based around Kaveri.

When high-clocking DDR-400 Winbond BH-5 production stopped it became a bit of a feeding frenzy when sticks went on the market. There were cases of a 2x512MB kit going in excess of $500.

Subsequently Samsung introduced TCCD chips and prices returned to normal...a new 2x512MB kit of OCZ DDR 400 could be had for a measly $245...now that was a deal! :)

Looking at it from that perspective perhaps an $80 kit of 2x4GB DDR3-12800 doesn't look all that bad. The problem is that everyone is trying to compare current prices to what amounted to being the "all-time-low" last fall and thru the end of 2012. That was simply a period of exceptionally low prices and not really a good indicator of the normal ram pricing cycle. DDR3 is still relatively cheap compared to various prior stages of its life cycle.

I made the mistake of buying RAMBUS. It was fast, after all. Now, not much phases me as far as RAM prices go. Fortunately I wound up with 32 gigs of extra RAM. I would like to mention my incredible foresight but I just got lucky and bought RAM I may or may not need.

The current prices make me cry, I wanted to get a new 32GB 2133 kit but not for the current price. Guess I'm stuck with my 16GB for now :(

I picked up Team Vulcan 2x4GB for $59 shipped a few months back. I hope it drops to $48 shipped or less soon for 16GB.

Just got this for a build I'm planning.

Newegg's early Black Friday promotion.

I just went with this today, so that I might be able to upgrade to more in the future.

I was tempted to just get this instead, and not sure I made the right decision (the stuff I got was $40 more). I read that Haswell loves higher speed memory though.

Well I didn't want to wait since it's the last thing I needed to complete the system

It's way too late for that to happen. DDR3 is either going to remain steady or start increasing in price, not decreasing.

~2 years ago I got 24gb for ~$60.

I bought 8 gigs of ddr3 (ripjaws) for $29 last year on black friday. Was shocked when I looked at this year's pricing.

Yeah, I could have gotten this for $5 more:

Hopefully there won't be much difference. I hopefully.

Ughh....Don't remind me.

Reefa madness nailed this issue on the head. Just to add these prices will never come down again; period. Just like HDDs, where now the going rate for a 1 TB is $65, while a couple years ago before the floods it was more like $45. Ram prices are gonna slightly decrease and then stabilize for good (and not for us DIYers good). I cant imagine the prices the DDR4 chips are going to launch. Im speculating low hundreds ($100-109).
I don't know about going rate, but back in 2011, I was buying 2TB Hitachis and Samsung Spinpoint F4s by the truckload for $50 a piece.

they lowered the supply so they could charge more, it sucks :(

I say stick'em, I've got 16GB right now, and don't have the slightest need to double that! I imagine many are in the same boat; now is the time to really assess if you NEED to buy more memory!

Hopefully this will lead to another glut of chips, and a realisation from the makers, that customers don't like to be intentionally shafted!

Nope. Same exact thing happened with DDR2. It hit rock bottom, then a year or two afterwards, prices shot back up right before DDR3 and stayed up.

Yupp, I picked up 32GB of Crucial sport on a shell shocker for $160 earlier this year for my main rig. Sale price for that RAM is now $240. Wow!

Then again... I did pay $290 8 years ago for 2x512MB of G.Skill DDR600. ;-)

Not exactly Godzilla but Hynix had a huge fire in September and they account for about 25% of all dram. Bigger problem is with the demand. The tablets are taking over and the demand for desktop ram is lower then ever. Next year tablets are predicted to outsell both desktops and laptops combined. We're looking at just over 50% of all pc shipments being tablets.

So, you 're saying that prices will only go up and thus, if someone wants to buy RAM, he 'd better buy now than later, right?

Sigh, i 've spare DDR3 RAM, but since i intend to stay with multiple AM3/AM3+ PCs for a good while, maybe i should grab some more while i can (in case some sticks go bad).

Here 2x4GB Corsair 1600 XMS3 CL9 1.5v (the one i have on all my rigs), is now at 67 euros! The last kit i had bought it at 50 euros and before that i had bought 4x4GB at about 75 euros.

There are CPUs out there that cost less than that!
