Never buy hard drives from Newegg!

I have had this same issue with Tigerdirect. They packaged my drives at the bottom of the box an put paper on top.
Newegg does not always package the stuff they sell. That being said, I would assume the HD manufacturer would package them better.
 
HD manufacturer actually just ship all the drives in anti-static bags and in a bubble container and send em by the pallet.

If you really need that much of assurance, I suggest buying drives that are Retail units. They offer a bit more warranty and usually will be double boxed (Retail box from factory, in the shipping box).
 
Everything I get from Newegg (and even Amazon) these days are just tossed into a box with crumpled paper on top. My video card arrived with the tape on both sides of the mailing box broken, if the tape had come off it would have just dumped my stuff out. Idiots. It came from a NJ warehouse I believe.
 
Provantage.com always packs hard drives extremely well. We've ordered 50+ drives from them in the past few years and they have always packed them well.
They usually have the lowest prices too.

I just got my 1TB 2.5" seagate hybrid drive from my laptop...It arrived in a static bag inside the new "Bubble Tube Pouch" which i would describe as the most securely shipped OEM hard drive I have ever had. This think is solid...snug as a glove around the HD and the no wiggle room in the box. It's perfect shipping. I really think you could drop it off a building and it would be fine.

I wish I took a picture, however, if you have an MC nearby, you can ask on the associates. A friendly associate opened one up for me last time. It was amusing, since stryofoam would be a better choice as it levels easily. But not the mfg who knows?

Never had an issue with Newegg. Sorry for your luck...but I think you're going out on stretch telling people not the shop there.

Actually, it looks like 10 for $10, so $1/ea.

Note that they are NOT inflated yet. Just the flat plastic skins.

Also, it looks like he has unlimited quantities, and they are coming from China. I'd guess it is coming from the same source that newegg gets them from (although they probably get them cheaper).

It says it is 10 PCS on the title. I had 0 problems with newegg as well (east coast). You could've simply refuse to accept the package instead of doing all that work.

Just a word to the wise. Newegg no longer believes in packaging hard drives when they ship them.

I just received my order of two WD 1TB blacks. They were LITERALLY sealed in antistatic bags (one ripped) and placed in the bottom of a box. My invoice, crumpled, was tossed on top. Overlaying it all was a strip of airbag packing with 5 cells. That's it. The box was nicely crushed.

The drives? Who knows. Do I really want to trust them? They've been treated worse than a bowling ball.

Never again, Newegg. Never again.

+=1 I won't buy anything that is delicate from them (MB, Disk drive, etc.). Last thing I bought was a power supply only because it was a really good deal. With their recent customer service history, I won't buy anything from them anymore.
 
Yeah. Newegg is a gamble. The fact that they won't respond to my requests is not a sign of a good company. No communication back. The fact that they read and censored my review is also not a good sign. I have spent thousands with them. Possibly ten thousand. Definitely over 5. Shrug. My money, my choice.

In the meantime, I will happily congratulate those whose products are delivered in good condition. I was happy for a while, too.

This is not a one off. Look at the others who have had issues. It is a company in decline which chooses not to face customer satisfaction issues. That choice has consequences.

I want other customers to recognize the gamble that they're taking when they shop at newegg.

Edited to add: Right after posting this I noticed an email had come in this evening from a customer rep at Newegg. That's a potentially positive development.

It's not just newegg that occasionally messes up big time on packaging, I got a WD black 2TB from amazon that was in a rather large box with nothing but 3 giant "padding" bubbles. You know, the kind designed to keep objects from moving around when they're a decent sized smaller than the box.

I guess it also had its unpadded anti static bag:

This is not typical for either company imo, my 4 WD 2TB reds I had bought previously all came properly packaged.

To be as clear as possible, the drive was literally just bouncing around the box completely unprotected. Take a cardboard box and drop a hard drive in it, that's literally what this was. I shook it up and threw it around and sent it back to amazon. One nice thing is that they have no questions asked returns.

Case in point. I received a Motherboard that was poorly packaged from Amazon. It had issues. I got a new MB in the mail with 2 day shipping and had 30 days to return the defective one. You won't get that with newegg nowadays.

When I had a poorly packaged drive from Amazon and I contacted them about it, they shipped a replacement next day air before they had even issued the return label for me. Took a fair bit longer with Newegg, especially since I'm on the east coast.

It's good to see the new Newegg bubble containers are working well. I wonder what their multi-drive shipments look like?
 
Sorry to hear this...I've had good experiences in the past when buying HDDs from Newegg.

Yep, I got one like that too. Didn't bother to test it, just sent it back. Newegg and Amazon both suck when it comes to packaging.

Same here. I try to order 20 HDDs at a time in the hope that I will get those, since the alternative is a lot of DOA drives. It doesn't look like any of the shops here know how to package HDDs. :mad:
 
I live in the Boston (usually ships from PA. warehouse) area & have bought my share of HD's All have come in fine (knock on wood) But my last purchase, (WD 1TB Black) I went to Micro Center. They were $10.00 higher in price, but they match NG no problem.

This is still true. I just got 5 drives this week and they came in one of the 20 drive styrofoam packages. (absurdly well packed) You could probably chuck the package like a football off your roof and the drives would be fine, the padding/crumple zones are thick and the drives are at least an inch away from any edge.
 
UPDATE: Newegg stepped up and fixed the issue

As promised, an update. Newegg customer service rep Wendy has sent me a "forward RMA" for the drives. Two new drives were delivered today, in exchange for me using an emailed UPS label and returning the previous drives within 30 days. (No charges to me, at all, unless I don't return the first two drives. They've already been dropped at a UPS pickup location.)

It took a lot of emails. And a few photos. I'm glad I took them BEFORE I opened the box. (As soon as I saw the crumpled box and felt and heard the drives slamming around when I picked it up, I started snapping photos.) The pix were probably the driving factor. I don't know. That, and my past order history.

The two new OEM drives were each in their own finger-style air bubble package, like the one pictured upstream, and then secured with a sufficient number of large coke can sized air cells so they wouldn't slide around inside the box. I consider that to be properly packaged.

In this case, Newegg eventually stepped up.

Glad to hear things got resolved for you. I'm still going to take your advice into account - a customer shouldn't be hassled like that when the problem isn't their fault.

I just received an Orient watch from the official US distributor, it arrived broken, and they want me to pay s/h both ways for them to fix it... There's another company I'll never do business with again.

I highly doubt it was photos that made the difference but anything is possible. Glad that everything worked out for you. Looking back at your original post, did you even contact them about this prior to posting? All I see is a hate post without any details of what actions you took and what Newegg told you.

My 2 cents: Unless they flat out tell you that they won't do anything about it, I suggest that you refrain from posting a hate thread with a title like "Never buy from XXX." Also, think about how many scammers out there trying to get "something" out of them.

They can't do that because the contract was to deliver a watch, not a broken watch, and the seller is responsible for delivering the merchandise in good condition. You owe nothing. The credit card issuer is responsible for correcting your bill if you write to them via post office mail at the special address for billing issues (no other address will necessarily guarantee your rights under the Fair Credit Billing Act) and refer to the problem as a "billing error" and say that you "do not accept" the merchandise and that you've tried to work in "good faith" with the merchant. If you say the problem a billing error, it has to be treated as a billing error, and it doesn't matter if the card issuer can collect from the merchant or not (they always can -- merchants have to pay into contingency funds in case they go bust). Also the burden of proof is on the issuer to disprove your claim, not on you to prove that it's true (but send copies of receipts, ads, and merchant communications anyway). However the card issuer can require that you try to return the merchandise, but if the merchant refuses delivery, your obligation ends. Most card companies have their own rules that go beyond federal requirements, such as by extending the limits on the time for filing complaints (usually 1 year instead of 60 days, but even federal law doesn't have a time limit if you apply the "good faith" provision and complain before paying the credit card bill) and the distance and dollar restrictions. However Mastercard doesn't seem to be very good at enforcing its own rules on its member banks.
