Norton Antivirus (3 PC License) -$0.01 (AR)

How lightweight is that for older machines. Currently running AVG 2014 free and its really light weight in terms of resource usage.

Only reason I say it is that the latest NAVs have really taxed my older systems.

Norton is one of the best these days.
Nice deal.

Is it? Got it free with my laptop and it was still enough to slow down the PC and had annoying pop ups. Though to be fair, it was a 90 trial version so that is probably why it had pop ups. Though it annoyed me so much I just let it expire.

You're not paying money, you're getting paid! a whole cent... after the rebate.

No, you're not.

SAVE $50 via MAIL-IN REBATE WHEN PURCHASED WITH ANY PC, TABLET, HARD DRIVE, PRINTER, MONITOR, MOTHERBOARD.

So if you buy something, they throw in Norton for free and give you a 1 cent rebate on what you buy, but you still pay taxes on the value of 49.95...

Keyword there is "paid suites".

Just use MSE.

MSE is basically useless these days. Seriously, look at any recent reviews, and you'll see that it's rated about as low as you can get. A few years ago, "just use MSE" was great advise. Now days, you're way better off with any of the other free AV programs out there (Avast, AVG, Avira, etc).

There closing up shop at MSE. Its becoming a dev group that will release problem component areas MSE team identifies to major AV makers.

The other freewares are recommended in most articles i have seen

Actually, there's a whole thing going on with AV-C, because their testing & methodology specifically makes Norton look bad. It bypasses one of Norton's key technologies in keeping you virus free.

That being said, I love AV_C, but you're looking at the wrong test. You need to look at their "real world" tests, the file detection tests are kind of superfluous.

Hmm. The independent testing here said they were at the bottom of the pack for detection.

Although that is just 1 groups opinion. I would like to see more independent testing.

Really? Because it still works fine for me and has worked since I started using it years ago.

Avast! is also a good choice, though.

Why would anyone ever pay money for Norton AV.

Never scans when I'm using the system. Never notice a slow down. Rarely bugs with fale positives. In short, it's everything it was from 2004-2007 (maybe 8).

And it's free

And yes, STFU, I know ou have to ay taxes in CA, but for most we mail order and pay none and even if we do pay, it's 5 bucks, max.

Maybe it's not doing anything at a. but I'm satisified and assuming I buy NIS, then I'll pay $5.00/license (I always pay for my folks AV).

That said, I never tell anyone not to use some other AV software....well maybe MSE. Just isn't good enough anymore, unless you're a careful browser. Oh th estuff my dad downloaded. It looked legit. Some of it was...but it took hours to clean it up and I'm still not sure....so I get to wipe the drive and reinstall....or maybe I can just restore from an old back up and patch the crap out of it.

I think it's probably good if you don't click on links for free video software (just an example), but if you do, it'll let it through, while Norton probably will not (not I haven't done this experiement yet, cause I'm not messing up my machine ;)

When I ran a full scan it didn't find much. Running other stuff, like malware bytes found a dozen issues which cleared up the obvious problems.

Plus, I find MSE uses more resources when scanning. I honestly never notice Norton scanning...cause it waits till I'm not doing anything :D
