As if going to the movies didn't suck enough already, the MPAA wants to search your bags, use night vision goggles and have police on hand during the movie.

The MPAA has updated its anti-piracy guidelines for movie theaters, providing tips and tricks on how to catch “camming” pirates on the spot. Among other things the movie group wants theaters to forbid the use of mobile phone cameras, and be vigilant of suspect cup holders and cameras built into eyeglass frames. To increase motivation, theater employees who bust a movie thief can look forward to a $500 reward.

So they want theaters to be like a airport security checkpoint. This will go well, I'm sure.

Cam footage sucks and pretty much nobody wants it. Luckily these measure will help kill the theater industry entirely.

There's really no way to prevent piracy from happening in the theaters. Most movies pop up on the black market because of previews or from inside theater jobs. However, if you want to prevent casual piracy (i.e crappy cell phone recordings), simply install some infrared lighting near or around the screen to drown out the picture. Human eyes will be unable to detect the infrared lighting and cell phone recordings will look like crap and be unusable. An IR filter would correct this, but most casual pirates will not be the wiser...

Let's give people even fewer reasons to go to the movies (annoyance) and drive up the costs (more "security" measures). Which drives more people away.

And it's all the pirates' fault! </s>

They could spend this money making Steam for movies (unlimited devices, log in one-at-a-time). Or they can keep wasting money on ineffective schemes.

I'm all for it. It will be the death of movie theatres and can only help but pave the way for the digital future that should have already been here.

Oh look. More reasons for me to continue not going to movie theaters.

Good F*cking Grief....

Have any of their policies / activities / other various forms of horse manure either work as a preventative, and/or been cost effective?

OK, so let me get this straight... When I PURCHASE a movie, I have to sit and wallow through warnings and such that I can't skip through that I rank as "enlightening" as the warning on the side of bleach that states that I shouldn't drink it and now, when I purchase a ticket to see a movie (and the 15-20 minutes of warnings, advertisements, and previews) I'll get a chance to see "new and improved" warnings, as well as the thoughts of people watching me via low light optics and searching my own property for recording device?

Who the heck is thinking of these ideas? Really? It has to be some corporate legal focus group circle jerk... Even my 11 y/o daughter stated after reading this "that's sorta creepy"... She's 11... and gets an allowance for chores... not thousands and thousands.. wait... sorry... millions and millions of dollars that really has NOT done a thing to prevent P2P / Torrent / "that which shall not be named". In all reality, it's done that opposite in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that searching you bags / observation with low-light optics is an infringement of privacy, and if it's not, it's absolutely pushing the boundaries with regards to the expectation of privacy even if it's in a public space.

Also, aren't the majority of movies that are ripped / pirated (especially the "CAM" ones) from theaters that are outside the US / done from industry released screening? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if that's the case why are you advocating such rather extreme measures....

MPAA does not equal the TSA / Homeland Security... Granted, you have probably spent an absorbent amount of money to "help" your positions in the government that the TSA is probably envious at this point.

There are many ways they could be more effective... unfortunately, they continue to miss the boat on this. By choice and sheer group think / ignorance, but still, missing the boat.

I came here to say this. Other than the size and the sound, no one actually likes the theater except for teenagers who want to make out (many moons ago I did security at a theater). A $40 date to eat stale popcorn, drink soda, listen to people talk or play on their phones, and not be able to pause --- when you can wait a few months and watch it at home for $1.50 from Redbox, drink your $0.79/liter soda, eat whatever you want...something's gotta give.

most of the cam stuff doesn't come from here. MPAA paying for this or are we? If we are, good luck getting me into a theater again.

The new TSA--- Theater Security Administration! What's next, arresting you if you have outside candy and drinks in your bag? Sheesh!

Even worse: many people don't need to go to a theater to get the same sound anymore. So, bigger screen and a sticky floor is the only real benefit.

The first time I'm frisked going to the theater, it will be the last. This is BS, we are the people PAYING to see the movies and this is the BS we get.

And I agree. Most of the camcorder stuff is done by theater staff.

Wow... they just went full retard.

They've been that way for quite some time.

These are the people that spent $250mil to make Man of Steel and are upset it only made $537mil.

If more than 100% return isn't good enough you can go fuck yourselves.

So you just don't like the price. Saying you or nobody else likes theaters is a bunch of crap.

They are doing this to drive up the cost of going to the theater. Heh, they probably have stock in AMC and Loews

The sad thing: this isn't even in response to the bastard who dressed up as Joke and blew a bunch of innocent civilians away - this is in response to people recording crappy copies of movies in theatres.

It's about preventing piracy (greed), not saving lives (safety). It just goes to show where the priorities are.

If some minimum wage rent-a-cop at a movie theatre tried to frisk my wife it'd be the last time I ever stepped foot in the place. Nobody is going to put up with this. People put up with the TSA only because driving across country is often impractical. The problem with this scenario is nobody NEEDS to blow $25 on a pair of movie tickets and beverage - we can watch slightly older movies comfortably from home.

I can see how this is going to play out.

Person A: Do you want to go to the Nazi movie theater?
Person B: No, I don't want to show them "my papers."

Pretty sure if you look at their taxes it somehow lost $790 mil.

are's most cam released made in Chinese theaters anyways? Why search us?

How many people are going to download cam footage anyway? If a pirate is really intent on getting a copy of a movie, they aren't going to bother with some terrible cam footage when they can probably find a clean 1080p mkv.

Agreed with the general consensus here. As if movie going needs one more hurdle. Pricing is through the roof (especially concession stands) and I don't like sitting through 10-15 minutes of commercials after having JUST paid an absurd amount to see the movie. Previews are one thing, but commercials? Way to drive me away. Add in the fact that I can't pause the movie to take a piss, and am usually surrounded by babbling idiots who won't shut up, and I think I'll quit going to the theater all together.

That's why I have a HTPC, a nice Polk surround set up and a 46" LCD that does just fine, thank you very much.

Yeah... there's a reason I haven't been to a theater in probably 2 years... and it was maybe a once a year occurrence before then...

Everything is always about money. If you work for a Speedway you'll get fired for resisting a thief even if it saves your life or someone else. It's company policy. It costs them less in insurance for their employee to get shot and killed than it does if the thief is injured and sues the company. That's the corporate mentality at work.

"I was going to bring my family to the 3d Imax show, but I just realized I can just download a cam copy instead. "

I find it hard to be outraged about this, considering it says right at the top of the picture "Pre-Release Screening Security". It'd be ridiculous if they were trying to set these rules for normal paying customers, but they're not. Higher security (whether like this or through NDAs or anything else) is absolutely normal if you get access to something before its official release. If you don't like it, skip the premieres and early screenings (or early hardware samples or anything else, for that matter) and wait until the official release.

I have 20 TB worth of cam footage on my computer. Sometimes I think to myself: "I really want to see a good movie", then a warm feeling washes over me as I remember that some cam footage with crackly sound and shaky footage is there waiting for me on my hard drive. I remember that this is the real stuff, it is nothing like netflix or blueray, i.e. a mere shadow of the real thing, rather it is the glorious and original experience that only happened in the theater all on my hard drives. And if it came from China, then it is even more special and dear to my heart.

A $500 cut of the $75,000 they would invariably sue the infringer for is hardly an incentive.

How about...half?

lol the MPAA acts like it doesn't understand corruption.

It's like the retail store which has elaborate security and rarely catches a thief as shrinkage by employees continues unimpeded.
