You guys hear about this "internet" thing people are talking about? No? Then this book should be helpful!

  • E-mail: “Never forget that electronic mail is like a postcard. Many people can read it easily without your ever knowing it. In other words, do not say anything in an e-mail message which you would not say in public.”
  • Finding people to communicate with: “… telephone a good friend who has electronic mail and exchange e-mail addresses with him or her.”
  • “Surfing” the Internet: “Surfing the Internet is a lot like channel surfing on your cable television. You have no idea what is on or even what you want to watch.”

“Surfing” the Internet: “Surfing the Internet is a lot like channel surfing on your cable television. You have no idea what is on or even what you want to watch.”

...but you just keep mindlessly surfing it for hours upon hours until you die.

Ah, shit.

It pisses me off that people forgot this and failed to apply it to social media.

I can't forget the beginning of the Internet. I was 100% Apple service at the time, and there was one thing that could never let you forget. It was the stuff made of nightmares and frustration.

It was.... Apple's Open Transport 1.0.

If you lived it, you remember it, and I'm sorry for the nightmares you'll now have once again.

Aw yeah, Nutscrape Navigator! Good times back in '94, I just got stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, KS and cut my teeth on the web that year.

In 92 I was a Sr in High School and my girlfriend was all about Compuserve. I thought the premise was stupid, she has these "friends" who she's never met that she talks to and every night. Just seemed weird to me but whatever I'd watch Star Trek TNG when she was doing that.

I still remember the first time I used a T1 connection. My mind was blown, I described it as "surfing the net from data stored on a hard drive"

Crazy this wasn't THAT long ago.

Everything I ever learned about the Internet, I learned right here.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A81IwlDeV6c

And I never had to learn anything else since!!

Quoted for truth.

I own a book about the internet with a 1994 copyright date. It's not this book, but it's badass all the same.

When did Netscape come out? I'm pretty sure I was still using Mosiac at that time.

Gave me a chuckle. I couldn't help but be reminded of this, too:

Wished I knew what the original source and date of that was. I'm thinking Popular Science, but it's hard to say.

I love how serious it takes itself, and the policeman has a futuristic helmet and what looks like a ray gun.

My first modem was a 56k. A buddy of mine only had a 28.8. He was so excited to come over when I got so that we could try it out.
When I got to college and lived in the dorms, we had T1. Then I discovered something else, online games.
My first was the original Unreal and Quake 2. Those were the days, LAN party without even leaving your room.
