I can still fire up mario kart for N64 and have a blast. Same goes with the DS mario kart. The Wii Mario Kart was amazing, as well. Actually every Mario kart I have played I loved. They all did something different, but better.

The innovation will be there in the new Wii U version. 5 player local kart races; enhanced online; tougher tracks; anti-gravity; gliders, bikes, underwater; more customization options.

Even if this was just "Mario Kart Wii HD" i would be fine with it because Mario Kart Wii is outstanding, especially the online play (even though Wiis online system sucks). Hell, Mariokart Wii sold a shit load; so I do believe it's a system seller and realistically the best one Nintendo has to come since it appeals to everyone.

Indeed. I've put probably thousands of hours into Mario Kart games over the years especially with friends. Mario Kart was one of the original party games of its time as well , before party games became a genre.

Even though its not exactly a simulation racing game the actual depth of Mario Kart games is pretty surprising. Nintendo at least takes the development of them seriously and doesn't just hand over development to a lesser in house team.

It certainly won't hurt the Wii U in sales , in Japan it should be a system seller actually. Both times I went to Japan my co-workers introduced me to their friends and when we actually went back to one's apartment , she had tons of Mario Kart memorabilia and said it was her favorite gaming franchise of all time. She told us how him and about 10-12 friends would have monthly competitions and do ranking and what not for cash.

People are forgetting that Mario Kart Wii sold over 30 million copies. It's still one of the best selling games ever made (that wasn't an original pack in). Combined with much more than the 3 or 4 exclusives the PS4 or Xbox One will actually have by the end of this year, the Wii U will look more and more appealing.

The games that sold the best for the Wii are MOTION CONTROLLED games period. This new tablet controller on the Wii U discriminates heavily on these types of games! You know the ones that have sold 10's of MILLIONS of copies. If NINTENDO wanted Wii U success they need to pack in a MOTION controller imho. The new Mario Kart will NEVER sell 34 million+ for the Wii U, simply because the Wii U will never ever get to 35 million consoles in the next 2 years to do it. Remember how the Wii outsold the N64 and Gamecube in just 2 years?

34 million Wii's were sold in just 2 years, because of THE MOTION CONTROLLERS! Yeah that's not happening this time around bro!! Even if the WiiU's sold like the Wii, how can they when its stuck without a MOTION controller bro? THAT'S 2 strikes against the Wii U. A huge 2 strikes! Your living in the PAST. (I've went over this Nintendo CURSED controller debacle (Power Glove ahem) in another thread as did you as well ;)) This isn't the first time Nintendo has given people a controller they don't NEED!

So how does Nintendo recreate the success of these motion controlled games without a packed in Motion Controller? (Answer they DON'T!)

Add up those games like Wii Sports+Resort+Play+Play Fit, or Just Dance series, and Mario Kart Wii with the motion controlled wheel accessory or not needed. How do you or Nintendo reinvent those games with a system that looks opposite to last gen in terms of controls? Let alone graphics that look by and large the same? How bro? THEY CAN'T! NINTENDO screwed themselves out of what their audience enjoyed last gen!

The fact you point out that Mario Kart Wii sold more copy's than the Super Mario Galaxy games combined proves how well that controller was. Also the lack of great racing games for the system as well. Heck think about this all the 4 Just Dance games combined sold more than Mario Kart Wii. How's that for a great game? I don't know...

Another point I have. The kids that grew up on a Wii are now TEENAGERS, well that creates another problem for Nintendo. These TEENS want a more advanced gaming platform, and it ain't a WII U bro! Most kids who grew up to teens now have played a Wii,XBOX360,PS3 by now, and they want more GROWN UP games than the Wii U will put out this GEN. They want games from XBOX and PS now imho.

The Wii U is destined to become a Gamecube seller at best. Enjoy it bro. The rest of us will enjoy our PS4, and the low IQ Americans will buy the XBOXOne. I can't wait till Nintendo develops games for my PS4 :D jk but I think it will happen in a generation or two.

Your post made me think how awesome Mario Kart U is going to be, Bro. I'll be able to use the gamepad to steer, with the motion controls (it does have them) and hopefully be able to look down to see the rear view.

But for all those other games that use motion controls, I'll be able to use the Wii-motes that are laying around the house and I won't have to go out and buy all new controllers.
 
Sooo I picked up a WiiU WW edition and.....I really like it! I have a PS3 too, but I really like the controller/tablet combo on the WiiU. I grew up on Nintendo products so it's not that surprising.

It sold massively better here in the states then Japan. The trend of Nintendo home consoles not selling as well in Japan is not a new one. Nintendo expects this. Even if the Wii U is a long term failure Nintendo doesn't spend a mint manufacturing consoles like Sony and MS do so they won't suffer the same long term effects.

Nintendo has enough cash and the xDS to not have to do anything drastic with the Wii U. Just nurse it along until the next generation - hopefully they'll have a good console strategy by then.

Of course you like it! You have it and I highly doubt you thought OBJECTIVELY about it's overall design before the fact of purchase. You like many others just thought, it's Nintendo it will be awesome here's my cash...or maybe you simply let someone else buy it for you! Therein lies the problem that most people don't buy a console without making sure there's some really good games for it! Along with really good system specs! When folks saw the original Wii with the motion controllers or played on one at a friends house they realized they really wanted it in their living rooms.

Yet that same person who tries a Wii U at their friends house will be like oh yeah that's neato bro...(secretly thinking I'm waiting for a PS4. Because that new Wii U is overpriced, has a small hardrive, has little to no next gen games on it, and the controller is simply a niche gimmick like the power glove which will die off in interest shortly or already has.

(Nintendo should have spent more money on designing better hardware to draw more developers) Nintendo just thought they could do whatever they wanted (Developers want more power, let's give them a tablet to develop on mentallity! DOH! Now they have hardly any 3rd party developers 1 year into this machine! ($#**!), and get away with it. That was OBVIOUSLY a mistake. Do a study you'd be shocked. Those annoying kids with annoying parents in your neighborhood, they own them. I personally think the PS4 will outsell the Wii U in 6 months to a year. If not people are a lot more poor than I thought.

I went from a NES, Atari, Genesis, SNES, TG16, Sega CD, Playstation, PC, Dreamcast. Got the kids a Wii 5 years ago then picked up a PS3+Move, because PC gaming is getting old and unfun. I'll prob pick up GT6 and GTA5 when it does a price drop, and see how the PS4 does with launch and get a PS4 with tax money, maybe wait for GTA5 on PS4 who knows. I have to get quite a few quite more PS3 games before I get tired of that system anyway. :)

The Wii U already has a Gamecube game bundled with it, that should show you where Nintendo visions it's system to end up as. :p Should have just named it Gamecube 2 eh?

I own a 360 and have since its release and I play COD games on it as well. I'm currently in college majoring in Astrophysics. My brother owns one as well and he just finished his Masters in Political Science in Germany two years ago. Two of our long time Xbox Live friends are both Doctors (one a surgeon and one a neurologist) and pretty much everyone we play with on our friends list is well educated with a decent job.

I do not believe you could claim otherwise with the PS4 concerning your opinion , of course it'll outsell the Wii U but that doesn't take into account the entire generational lifespan of the Wii U. However if you bothered to remember that the Wii out sold every other console before it (100 Million units..) then really claiming the Nintendo will bow out of the console market because of a predicted failed generation is entirely foolhardy even under the best assumption.

Your generalized viewpoints on console ownership however could do with some serious personal reflection and review.

Dude frankly your acting pretty hard headed. Threads like this were popping up all over the place with the 3ds, ign announced its massive failure even. And expected the ps vita to be phenomenal. At this point in time I have found absolutely no reason to even consider a ps4 aside from having a blu ray player for my bedroom, the exclusives on it are shit. Id much rather have super smash brothers when it comes out than crap ass killzone. Also your saying that the other poster couldnt have done a poll of all wii u owners yet your implying that you have? Get over yourself. Nintendo isnt in trouble, sony on the other hand are praying the ps4 will be its saving grace

True but the Playstation 2 had a 6 year head start and also created and drove the DVD medium almost entirely (you could take at least 50 million plus and chop it off the figure based on usage exclusively as a DVD player). The Wii is exclusively a gaming console.

I'm going to blow your fucking mind: I bought a WiiU over a PS4. Why? Games. I could easily get a PS4 or XB1 at launch, but neither of them have enough games to be worth it. The WiiU? Yep. Are most of them first party titles? Yes, but at $300 that makes it worth it for me. There are enough games our right now to keep me happy, especially since 4 days out of the week work makes it unlikely that I have the time or motivation to play games. Will I get a PS4? Of course, I will get a XB1 at some point as well. I don't have any loyalty to any platform. My only concern is games. To hell with stupid specs arguments and fuck any kind of brand loyalty or what have you.

In six months I might have a PS4, or maybe later into the spring. I want to see how inFamous Second Son turns out first. I do want to get a PS4 before Destiny comes out though, assuming it keeps looking promising and Bungie doesn't say anything about a PC version.
 
It'll be really interesting to see where all 3 of the new consoles will be in 8 months. Will the PS4 and Xbox One have any "system-seller" exclusives yet? Will Smash, Mario, and Mario Kart move systems or not?
I have no idea. I'm just going to play it by ear with the 2 big dogs and hold out hope that Mario Kart and Smash get back to form.

I think in 8 months they will all be in pretty good positions. The Wii U only needs a steady release of good games and it'll pick up steam. I think the PS4 and Xbox One will really smash horns probably in their second year when developers begin to get comfortable with the development platforms and we start to see games that will set a standard for future releases. Launch titles are always garbage compared to a few years afterward when the quality of releases goes up.

It may very well end up being another Gamecube and end the generation with the lowest sales but I don't expect it to be another PSP or the like. The Wii U will likely do alright and just force Nintendo to stop and reevaluate what they're doing and try to figure out how to really compete with their next console. Of course if things go poorly for Sony we could end the next generation with only two companies in the console space.
 
I still think Nintendo should either stick with handhelds or get our of the hardware market completely. They could make SO much more money whoring themselves and their IPs to the other consoles.

They don't need to stop making hardware, they do however need to get rid of Iwata and anyone on their board that is making stupid decisions. Nintendo's biggest problem is that they're old fashioned. They are stuck in the past and too reluctant to come into the present. Their online set up is a perfect example of this. No unified accounts across hardware platforms, all purchases tied to a single system, no cloud stuff at all, an archaic multiplayer structure, and so on. The 3DS and Wii U's online features feel like something from the early 2000s. It is a complete mess. On top of that is their attitude with third parties. Nintendo needs to play Sony and Microsoft's game here and start courting developers and publishers. MS and Sony are more than willing to offer intensives to studios or just straight up pay money for games, Nintendo refuses to do that. This leads to big publishers like EA simply not bothering with the Wii U because it's not worth the cost to port and Nintendo isn't interested in offering assistance.

On top off all of that Nintendo has terrible PR. The Wii U name on top of never actually explaining what it is lead to consumer confusion.
 
I was going to go to Gamestop today solely for picking up my copy of StarCraft II: HOTW, but I am thinking about also getting the Wii U Wind Waker bundle. The damn sailing music gets me every time.

Also, I just realized you could play the entire game using just the controller, without the system hooked up to a TV.
 
Bad thing about WindWaker is they fixed it up and scaled it to 1080p, BUT Nintendo didn't push the fps past 30fps again. I was watching a LP of it and he even said it would be nice if it didn't drop down in the 20's sometimes it still does, and he wished it ran @ 60fps.

Sounds like Nintendo fixed a bug or 2, and upscaled it. They didn't do anything special with WW imho. It just looks less graphically crappier than you remember it, but doesn't run faster even though I imagine the Wii U has a graphical advantage over the Gamecube couldn't they have added some AA? Or HDR instead of BLOOM it's burning my EYEZ....HAHA. Or 60 fps. Or ALL of the above? Nah whatever Nintendo likes being lazy, and raking in money. That's all I get out of it. Another missed opportunity.

I haven't played enough to comment on the frame rate yet, but otherwise I like the update. The bloom isn't THAT bad. As for AA, I don't really see jaggies on my TV. The art-style of the game always did a good job hiding the rougher elements, even on the Gamecube. It is also why the Gamecube version still looks good. It is a great update that doesn't fuck with what made the game so good and keeps the feeling intact. It isn't riddled with bugs like other HD updates, everything actually looks redone. It's one of the best HD updates I've seen. It's not KH1.5, but it is miles above the crappy, lazy, HD updates that don''t even bother to make the games look good. I'm talking God of War, Splinter Cell, Silent Hill, DmC, and so on. WW looks like Nintendo actually put some real effort into it, even if it isn't perfect.

I feel a little funny playing what looks like a kids game, but I'm really enjoying it. The catch is it's not really a system seller. I picked up the PC version for $40 on Steam. There's also a free demo if you want to try it out. I found the demo while looking around for a platformer on Steam & remembered the name from this thread. A 360 controller helps quite a bit. They also released it on 360 and PS3 I think. I think I might like the PC version better. I played the demo a bit on a Wii U at Best Buy, and I was just slashing ropes with Murfy while Rayman followed along automatically. On the Wii U you have to use the touch screen. A review I read said the 360 version did the something similar.. On the PC version you have to control whatever character you're playing and Murfy at the same time. You don't have to maneuver Murfy though, just hit buttons. It gets a little nuts in some of the race levels. There is, of course, a catch with the PC version: Uplay.

Spent a few hours with a Wii U now, played some Wind Waker and NintendoLand.

Nintendo Land is a freaking train wreck of usability. Way too much, look up, now look down, now have people hold the WiiMote vertically. Now hold it horizontally... now use the D-pad to seleciton something instead of pointing at it... The games were pretty fun, but people playing spent way too much time trading around controllers, picking their Mii, and so on. Also the auto on the tablet is out of sync with the home theater enough to be annoying as shit for everyone not using it. The Zelda game sucks (you can't see what is going to hit you) and the Pikmin game is just terrible. The other games are really fun though.

Speaking of Miis, what a freaking joke. The tablet is good for creating Miis, but overall they look like shit and the higher resolution just makes them look worse than they do on the Wii.

The Wind Waker tablet looks cheap and feels cheap. It is super light the gloss black looks terrible with the gold trim on it. Shitty battery life on the tablet at well, probably because the battery is tiny.

Wind Waker itself is nothing special. Too much lighting effects and washed out colors. It lost the super bright and clean color pallet of the original, replaced it with higher resolution and duller colors. It really lost its charm on me, I would rather place the GC version. Also I think it takes more time to look down and poke shit on the tablet compared to just using a menu on the screen. The whole "OMG second screen" got old very quickly, I would have rather just used the TV. And Wind Waker doesn't support remote play on the tablet /facepalm For a game Nintendo wants to sell at full retail price, they should have done better.
