Company expects GAAP net operating loss of approximately $950 million to $995 million; loss includes a primarily non-cash, pre-tax inventory charge of approximately $930 million to $960 million resulting from the increasingly competitive business environment impacting BlackBerry smartphone volumes, and a pre-tax restructuring charge of $72 million

As a consequence of the more intense competition the Company is experiencing in its hardware business, it expects to report a primarily non-cash, pre-tax charge against inventory and supply commitments in the second quarter of approximately $930 million to $960 million, which is primarily attributable to BlackBerry Z10 devices. The current quarter will also include a pre-tax restructuring charge in the approximate amount of $72 million reflecting ongoing cost efficiency initiatives.

You need to be one of two things in today's mobile market.

Android or Apple.

Everything else, you're a joke, waste of time.

I've never seen anyone with a Window's phone and that's the gods honest truth and I am in KC and around 1,000's of people when I go out and they all almost always have their phones out.

Poor BlackBerry. Maybe another time, another world

Well there's always the market leaders. By the same token OS X, desktop Linux and Chrome OS would be jokes on desktops and laptops, but it's unlikely that any of these things are just going to go away. A joke is million and millions of users for any of these platforms, so while small in the total picture there is space for more than just market leaders.

Who knew they still had a billion to lose? That's the real story

lol, thats what i thought. The Z10 looked interesting but not enough to get me to drop my old galaxy nexus

They might still have time to become a software company and market messaging and business software products that run on iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile ... given the current market there probably isn't room for more than three players ... even the hardware players are hurting with only one of the Android companies making profits (Samsung) ... the other hardware companies are all losing money or making very very small profits ... the money is definitely on the software side for BB I think and not in hardware anymore ;)

woops. all those z10's they thought they'd sell.

They'll need a $49.99 firesale to get rid of those. It's a semi-dumb phone without the apps ecosystem.

They had their time, they got comfy and then the world left them in the dust so fast that they didn't know what the hell happened, or how to fix it.

Then the management, which sat on its ass and did nothing for years while the obvious scenario for any halfway aware technophile played out, fired the sales force.

Long term play there.

Letting go sales and marketing employees are two of the biggest mistakes that companies seem to make over and over again. I shake my head everytime also.

If they go the way off the Dodo, I can not say that I care. They were way to content to stay in their niche. To impressed with their product. Android phone blew their damn doors off. But they felt the no need to take notice of android until it was way to damn late. The BB Storm was a pathetic attempt to show fleeing BB users they could play ball with android. I left BB for android because I was feed up with them practically ignoring android and not responding.

Nothing like predictive analysis.
They've got 3/4 of a year to do something about it :p

It still stuns me when I try to figure out how people who are supposed to be at least barely competent are paid so much to be so fucking useless at their jobs.

BB execs..."this whole Android and iPhone thing will blow over I'm sure." If they even knew there were other phones in the world.

AIG FP..."Why shouldn't we insure tens of billions of dollars of bad debts that hedge funds are speculating against? This rating agency said it was cool, I'm sure it's fine. When's lunch?"

Person gripe against Ford..."I don't see why we shouldn't put the brake lever right next to and in front of the gas pedal. Sure we never did that in 110 years, and no one else assumes drivers are wearing stilts to sneak past it, and there's no actual reason to do it, but why the fuck not?"

Fuck, I get paid so much less than these knob polishers, and at least I'm good at my job.

Agreed.

Read another article that said BB is planning slahs 4,500 jobs and 960 mil in inventory. Coupled with the $1B loss I really wonder how much longer BB will be around (as a standalone company).

How do they know they will even have 1 billion to lose by that time next year?

They are probably using Fiscal years ... our company is on Fiscal year 2014 right now since our last fiscal quarter ends in March of 2014 ... they are likely the same ;)

As of Jun 28th, Blackberry had 3.1 Billion in cash on hand, so they can absorb this loss.

But yes, the company is pretty much done for at this point. There is no place for Blackberry in this post PRISM world. They buckled and handed over the security keys to the Indian government (and at this point, given the recent revelations, it's hard to believe the NSA did not also have access to them), and pissed away the one niche they could have operated in - secure data and mobile communications. Combine that, with their inability (or seemingly unwillingness) to compete with iOS and Android offerings, and here you are.

Truly terrible leadership.

Stick a fork in them, they're done.

I was finally able to shut down my BB server last week, when the last user with an old Blackberry phone finally upgraded.

We used to have 30 users a few year ago, and the company has grown significantly since then, but everyone has switched to Apple or Android. I did have one person who went with a new BB, but I was able to connect using active sync.
