SEGA.

Purposes of the business transfer
Index has achieved an excellent track record in the design and development of content for mobile phones. On the development of home video game software, the company owns a number of prominent IPs, namely the “ATLUS” brand titles of “Megami Tensei” series, “Persona” series and “Etrian Odyssey” series among others. Since 2012, SEGA has been assigned as a distributor in Japan of the home video game software programs which Index developed. This commissioned business has helped the Group increase revenue for its Consumer Business. In addition, Sammy Corporation (“Sammy”), the Company’s subsidiary, consigns the development of LCD rendering and control boards for pachinko and pachislot machines to Index.
Notice is hereby given that SEGA DREAM CORPORATION, which was newly established as a wholly owned subsidiary by SEGA CORPORATION (“SEGA”), a subsidiary of SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS INC. (the “Company”), has concluded a business transfer agreement with Index Corporation (“Index”) for the purpose of revitalization of the business. Under the agreement, SEGA will take over the operations conducted by Index, the bankrupt company that applied to the Tokyo District Court for the commencement of civil rehabilitation proceedings effective from June 27, 2013
Get ready for this one:
The Company believes that transfer of Index’s operations to SEGA will create synergies, on the grounds that the deal will enable the Company to:

(1) gain access to prominent IPs in the home video game software, through which the Company can expect to achieve steady flows of revenue;

(2) expect further facilitation of revenue growth for the PC Online Game Business and Content Business for Smart Devices operated by SEGA and SEGA Networks Co., Ltd. by exploiting acquired prominent IPs

(3) maximize the value of acquired IPs by effectively deploying them in the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines segment, Amusement Machine Sales and Amusement Center Operations segments.
(2) Assets and liabilities to be transferred
Tangible and intangible fixed assets as well as intellectual property assets related to the above operations to be transferred. (These include shares of Atlus Holding, Inc., which is the parent company of Index Digital Media, Inc., as well as Tiger Mob Limited, Index Corp (Thailand) Ltd. and Mobi Town Ltd.) In principle, liabilities including interest-bearing debts will not be taken over.
(Index Digital Media Inc is Atlus USA)

I have mountains of salt for this thread. This is ..... I don't know how to feel... SEGA....

On one hand they can use this opportunity to translate Yakuza (using Atlus USA) or bring more Japan only titles to NA, or I could be completely wrong and SEGA will be SEGA and we will never see SMT and Persona in NA ever again. Or maybe they go a SquareEnix on us and make overpriced iOS apps with IAP for every imaginable option. Persona 5 iOS? SLIDE THE SCREEN!!!! SLIDE THE SCREEN FOR MAGIC!!!

I'm feeling salty...

Sega please keep whatever dignity you have left and dont turn Persona into F2P

So this is just for stupid pachinko machines? Good.

If not, then this is horrible news. Sega has been ruining their own IPs for years.

Ugh Sega. What they've become is just such a sad husk of their former glory of the console years.

Sad to hear they bought Atlus. Let's hope they don't torpedo another developer into depression.

It's people like you though who don't support the company's they love enough though. If you love these games you buy the whole company's catalog, if you don't then please stfu you weren't [H] enough to begin with derp derp.

Maybe SEGA bought them because...get this...THEY WANT to make GREATER GAMES in the FUTURE. SMH.

They probably bought it because it has games under it's belt that sell well. Sega will probably think, yes! lets make this game... hmmm lets put a sega twist on it. Then fail.

Maybe some Persona characters will get added to the next Sonic racing game.

Or they want Atlus for collaboration (Since Atlus has been putting out some good stuff these last years) to make their SEGA games as well as Atlus older IP's to be better, and sell better. SO it can be a win/win for both SEGA/ATLUS.

These opinions probably require a person to have a more positive outlook in life than negative.

I like SEGA and Atlus, so I hope for the best. But that's the internets people can choose to whine 24/7. :D

Maybe you should STFU and take five minutes to do some research. Atlus has NOTHING to do with why this sale happened. This is entirely due to Atlus' parent company, Index Corporation. Index committed fraud and had to file for bankruptcy following an investigation by the Japanese government. Atlus itself was doing damn good, one of the few big Japanese console publishers constantly making money

If Sega could afford them then certainly Microsoft or Sony could have got them. If Sony got them I would have laughed my ass off.

SEGA has been doing a lot of collecting other gaming companies. They own the Total War series on PC now, don't they?

Maybe SEGA is acquiring a set of studios to support a new console with exclusive titles. DC2!!! Keeping hope alive...

Microsoft would have no idea what to do with Index or Atlus, it wouldn't really go over well with Japanese gamers either. As for Sony, they are really in no position to spend several million dollars on any company. I'm not really surprised that Sega Sammy had the money, they make a ton of money from pachinko machines.

Weird... I would've thought Microsoft would have wanted to buy Atlus if they could. Atlus has a pretty big group of fans in Japan, and it could be a ticket for them to get into the Japanese Market.

Sounds like you're way too optimistic. Can't say I've, personally, been too impressed with Sega for a good long while now. But I probably don't play the same game as you do.

An American company with American business practices buying a well known and highly respected Japanese publisher would likely anger the Japanese gaming community more than anything. Microsoft's policies would kill Atlus.

They make more than that, they still crank out arcade machines and solid games. There's nothing bad about this, it's a good fit. If you aren't familiar with the Japanese import or arcade market you're really not up to speed on just what they do.

It's better than Nintendo, Sony, or god fucking forbid MS getting their hands on them.

I'm pretty sure MS is out of the running when it comes to ANY Japanese company.
Derangel summed up nicely what would happen. Don't forget that SEGA doesn't like to translate games, ATLUS is skilled at translating games....Could be a good fit, or could be typical SEGA(nothing comes over).

I guess we will see, but I'm not that optimistic, considering SEGA of the last 1-2 years.

Atlus has their own localization team, Sega would be stupid not to take advantage of that. Anyway, as a developer Sega is pretty hit or mess but as a publisher they've been pretty decent lately. They seem to give their subsidiaries a good bit of freedom. Sega's only real bad spot is Sonic Team and even they seem to have gotten some clue as to what makes a good Sonic title. Of the major Japanese publishers Sega is probably the best home for Atlus. Capcom would utterly ruin them, Square-Enix probably couldn't afford them, Sony and Nintendo would be equally bad for a company the likes to spread it's releases across many platforms depending on where they feel it fits best. Any of those would stick their noses heavily into Atlus' operations as well. As long as Sega just lets them exist as a separate subsidiary and continue as they have been (which has been doing quite well for them) there shouldn't be any problems.
