I'm looking to upgrade my HTPC which is running a q6700 @ 3.3ghz with a 6870. I've been hearing a lot of good things from the AMD FX chips. So I started looking around to buy a FX chip only to find out there tons of models. I just want to know the best dollar for dollar FX cpu ?

Please wait for kaveri, that said 6800k is the best apu right now and either fx 6350 or fx 8350 are best cpu depending how many cores
 
vote for FX8320 or FX8350. that would be my choice...
 
What do/will you do with it?

If it's a movie/TV/video watching + web surfing/email/facebook machine that you don't run any heavy games on AMD APUs are great. AMD FX + vid card can work well for video encoding since it tends to work well with lots of threads. If you're looking to run games on it, standard gaming rig build principles apply aside from 720p possibly being acceptable due to TV size and/or viewing distance. Maybe an i5 + 760 or something like that for current "heavy" PC games.

I do all of my RTS gaming on my HTPC, and I have no interest in Intel. My main rig is intel and would like to give AMD a whirl. So I think I'm going to shoot for the FX-8250, the benchs for it look solid.
 
Get an 8320. Don't bother with the older chips and don't waste money on the more expensive chips.
 
If youre looking for a value chip, the 6300 is hard to beat. Usually runs around $120 and comes very close to the 8300 and can even match it in a few things. Overclocks very well usually and since its just a 6 core, it wont be as hard on your motherboard in terms of how much juice it sucks down. For HTPC use, Id say thats your best bet. $118 shipped right now on Amazon.

^To be fair, the TDP is just for the stock clocks (the FX-6350 refresh, which is the same chip, just clocked a bit higher, is a 125W part). The amount of heat to disperse would increase beyond the TDP listed as you overclock. Though since the FX-6300 is really cheap, overclocks very well, and has one less module than the FX-8xxx series, it won't use as much power or generate as much heat. It's just a really great value for the price.

At least it's priced much better than Zambezi was when it first launched. The FX-6100 costed about the same as one of the top-of-the-line Thuban x6 chips (around $180 IIRC), when the FX was actually worse in almost every way. Dunno what AMD was thinking back then, lol.

For a HTPC an APU will do plenty by itself. You could sell your current cpu, board and 6870 to fund a 6800K and board. Heck, maybe even have money left over for lunch ;)
 
i can vouch for the 8350, if you can get it with a good mobo combo even better, i recently bought a Fx 8350, with an Asus M5A99FX Pro 2.0 mobo combo deal on newegg for 320(300 after MIR) it is really a great upgrade from my ancient X2 6400+

although, for an HTPC, like spazturtle said, the A10-6800k would be great for what your looking for, and you'll save money not buying a GPU, and would still be able to play games on decent settings.
 
Your processor is fine. I would invest the money in a nice HTPC case and a low profile CPU cooler (if needed for case).
 
don't buy the 8350.

Buy the 8320. There is no reason to pay the premium for the 8350. Both the 8320 and the 8350 have the same overclock results, with a slight bias towards the 8350. That being said, you also pay 50$ more for one.

If your concern is a media rig, then go with the A10-6800k. Pair it with fast mem and you have a computer which will run games at 1080p.(not maxed out) but at 1080 with just the built in gpu.
