I was interested in what kinds of descriptions of games turn people off from a game.

Here are some game descriptions that make me less likely to buy a game:

  • Side-scrolling
  • 8 bit
  • 16 bit
  • Platformer
  • Retro
  • Casual
  • Mobile
  • Requires an Origin Account for Activation :p
Mostly, I just find myself tired of the flood of indie games that are built almost solely on the above game mechanics. Obviously, there are exceptional games that use the above in interesting and new ways, but they are not at all common. Most of these just make me roll my eyes and move on.

Anything to add?

"Indie" (there's a difference between "indie" games and independent games).

Putting "indie", is usually shorthand for saying "this is probably has a fuckton of dullness and boring repetitive gameplay, but please forgive us and overlook everything as we are poor and my mother was mean to me". It's like a child singer; you all know they fucking suck at singing but no one says anything because they are "only 5". :p

"Does not have an offline mode"

Not sure if any games have stated this but there are way too many as of late that adhere to this.

"social"

Bah, I play games to get a break from reality, not be glued back into it with social features I care nothing about.

Read the latest blurb of marketing from the Thief reboot project and that sums most of it up for me.

Internet connection required
Indie
"Season pass"
Turn based
No dedicated servers(for multiplayer)

Requires DRM of some sort besides Steam...

beautiful
mesmerizing
revolutionary
immersive
action-packed
epic

... basically anything that is merely opinion... let me make my own damn mind up about how great the game is, thank you very much! :)

same goes for books, movie and any product... the desperate marketing blurbs are really annoying and make me feel like I'm doing them a favour in trying it out.

Just talking about the content of the product, in this case things like the style of gameplay, characters and storyline... is fine though.

Oh, and quotes from reputable game reviewers are different and totally fine, it's just when the developers/publishers do such things.

May add more later

Yes, I clearly should have added Games for Windows Live. I don't like EA/Origin for various reasons, but at least it works most of the time. GfWL is an abomination that should just be wiped off the face of the earth. Luckily, it seems to be getting much less prevalent as time goes on.

Turn based

lol, but no joke. Yet some of my favorite games are turn based! And I'm sure I'll be playing quite a few more turn based games in my gaming career before I die. It usually takes a warm up break in period before I get sucked in to a turned based game. I was so happy to hear that project eternity wasn't turn based.

I'm not terribly upset about the direction the studio went, I don't care that much. I just hate it when PR guys say their combat is more visceral and epic! than ever before.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Space 2 & 3 (PC). 1 sucked horribly for me on PC due to lack of rebinding of certain keys & mouse buttons.

I used to like spyro games until they started making him ugly as fuck and they said they was doing this toy crap. They are ugly toys too.

So them saying that and this picture ruined that for the rest of my life,. everything they said makes me not want to touch this crap with a 30 foot pole.

Oh he was getting ugly and messed up in legend of spyro games this he is not spyro it's a freak of nature they are calling spyro.

wake me when nintendo does the toy thing right and makes bad ass looking nintendo toys.

Here are some more

Console first person shooter.

Call of duty

PC games on console

Console port

analog stick aiming

Rapes your mom.

If a game rapes my mom, then I'm probably not going to play it.

Unless that tramp throws out my comic books, then I'm buying two computers so I can play that game twice as much.

I'm just kidding. I never even had a mom.

(if a game has no story and/or is multi-player almost exclusively then I'm totally uninterested)

Any game that uses LEET speak for advertising. That's one of the reasons I knew Bulletstorm was going to be awful. Also I was interested in trying an MMO forgot which one but it advertised Epic Phat Lewts and I immediately was turned off.

Wow ...I love infinite but that advertisement is AWFUL. How about they sum it up with ....It's awesome, read the reviews.

DLC
Pre-order bonus
Origin required
Internet connection required

at least it was informative, I didn't realize the game was getting those kinda reviews... makes me want to check it out now..

but I can totally see how it would irritate some folks too, especially if, in reality, the game sucks

and it's still better than Rockstar's Social Club.

A lot of the DLC out there, Social, any of the independent systems I have to use to play a game for every single developer (Ubisoft crap, GfWL etc), Origin-only, subscriptions, mobile are my main ones. And anything that decides to skip the PC as a platform. Pre-orders rewards that vary retailer by retailer. Awesome, so I miss out on parts of the game immediately depending on who I buy from? Makes me want to not buy the game at all.

I think of everything, the social elements annoy me the greatest. No, I will not be linking my facebook to this. No, I will not be giving you the ability to spam my friends with useless news of my gaming habits.

TBH, I don't even read game descriptions. I just go by what I see in vids.

But yea, requires internet connection would probably turn me off.
