Does anyone have any recommendations for some good single player free to play games on steam for my mom. I got her downloading Everquest right now but I think that much for her to start with right off the bat. She's pretty much computer illiterate mind you, but I've been trying to help her.

Definitely no shooters. I'm thinking like a non-overly complicated single player RPG to get het accustomed to proper PC gaming. She's been playing those atrocious Wild Tangent games and other horrible games that came bundled with her computer to which I quickly uninstalled and set her up with a steam account.

*Recommendations for non-expensive single player adventure/rpg/indie games are welcome also

Computer illiterate + computer games does not compute for me. I've tried this with my grandmother and she still can't figure out how to double-click.

EQ1 would definitely be too hardcore, maybe EQ2? It is at least a bit more casual friendly.

Start her on farmville or something along those lines. She will get turned out by gamers trying to learn at that level. Or at a minimum, put her on a single player only game and not on an MMO type, unless its like farmville or whatever the facebook people play now...

lol, well she's not that bad but pretty close:p

ok, but looking for something single player. I'm totally uneducated of what's what in the free to play category.
*Def No to Facebook garbage, steam only please.

My wife played SC before I met her. She also played The Sims and a bunch of those "dash" games.. dinner dash, hotel dash, etc. She then graduated to COD: Nazi Zombies, L4D, etc. Now she's one SC2, BF3. Most if not all of those are on Steam. Not free though..

Not sure if this helps...

Isn't Maple Story F2P? Try that maybe?

There aren't a whole lot of F2P games that meet your specifications (and are good quality), but you can often find puzzle/adventure/RPG indie titles for only a few dollars.

Yeah that helps greatly:rolleyes:
sorry couldn't help it :)

F2P isn't a great place to send a beginning gamer. Microtransactions are synonymous with F2P. And most beginning gamers will be scared by the appearance of the opportunity to spend real money on virtual things.

Go to something older so the price isn't high, and start there. Sim City 4, Stacking, Tiny & Big: Grandpa's Leftover's, Torchlight, Torchlight 2, Bastion, Braid, Costume Quest, Machinarium, World of Goo and the like. Things with platforming (controller?), and simple clicking with no in game advertisements for paid content are probably best. It'll cost you at the start, but non-gamers are used to those kind of purchases anyway.

plants vs zombies and Peggle..........dad cant get enough *brains*
She's actually played PvZ and liked. I'm looking for something a litte more robust (3d gameworld with exploration and what not)

I suppose recommendations for non expensive adventure/rpg/indie games are also welcome.

Alright! I'll look into those, thanks.
Btw, her laptop runs Crysis relatively well at low settings and 1024 res to give you an idea of performance. I installed it a while back to see if it would even run it, to my surprise it did/can.

specs.
Win 7 home prem. x64
HD 4250
2gb.ram
apparently a single core AMD v140¿ @ 2.3ghz

You want Peggle?... Go f*ck yourself!:p
I remember that from that vid when Gearbox was promoting Borderlands, sorry couldn't resist.

You are better off getting some cheap older games that will be 10 times better than all those pay to win games on steam.

path of exile isn't on steam but its f2p rpg and it doesn't require you to spend any money. its the best f2p game i have seen so far.

its kinda hard to find simple rpg's. you could always try a turn based rts/rpg. like heros of might an magic. Its not terribly simple but its turn based so its As fast or slow as the player requires.

Well I made her a PoE account, activated it, and d/l the game files but when I try to launch it freezes at the initial loading screen. Not sure what's going on with that, possibly the crappy hardware?

Maybe try something co-op with her?
starting your grandma on an MMO man? thats super hardcore, you don't want to scare her off now.

Loading takes a few.

I'll be honest with you, The Sims. Any of the series, 1/2/3. Get them for her when they go on sale (or not on sale). Enormous time sink, and popular for a reason.
She might enjoy Torchlight 1/2.
I am pretty sure there are a number of point and click mystery games as well on there.
Could throw The Walking Dead game at her perhaps.
Monkey Island games.
Sam and Max episodes.
Poker Night at the Inventory.
Dear Esther.
Plants vs Zombies.
Defense Grid: The Awakening
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Civilization IV
Tropico 3

I know you said no FPS, but Morrowind. Make her play Morrowind. I know its not a FPS, but its played in the first person perspective.. (I can't stand Bethesda games in 3rd person, its terrible, and only fun for looking at yourself).

That's all that comes to mind right now.

Got it setup and running though it's not pretty @ 800x600 and everything turned down and off. Set her up with the ranger, the chick with the bow (I think) so she can just point and click targets from afar. She should be able to play this.

Also I think I found the game I've been looking for the whole time that I just noticed, Dragon Nest on steam. Got that downloading as well. It looks kinda neat, but again it aint gonna be pretty, but hopefully it will run reasonable.

I need to finish my cleanup job on this laptop, she has/had it spammed up with so much garbage. Hopefully then things might run a little better. What I need to do is just give this sucker the old black viper super tweak! :D

Torchlight 1/2 seems looks to be something she could get into, but she really doesn't want to spend any money right off. I suppose I could be the good son and buy them for her, but I doubt it lol! Thanks for the suggestions!

How about myst. its a great point and click puzzle game. its not terribly complicated, and there are a bunch of walk throughs online if she needs help. plus if she likes it you can progress through the series which transfers from static point and click to full blown first person puzzle game which would be a good intro to fps games.

ok thanks for the suggestions. I tried a little of Dragon Nest last night, but it's def going to be a little complicated and it runs poorly on that crappy laptop; it's got some hitching and stuttering issues. I think we're gonna stick with PoE for a minute. I actually just made an account for myself and finished d/l it a minute ago, so I can play it on a proper pc and learn a little more about it. The laptop runs it at around 25-30fps on all low settings, which is playable for the most part. I just hope once things get a little more involved and hectic the framerate doesn't plummet to badly.

*just launched PoE for the first time on my machine, launched in less that a minute. noice!:)

The old Black & White games probably might fit in well; along the same lines, From Dust is fairly simple to understand but still makes you think a bit and can be enjoyable and relaxing.
