Anyone have a serios gaming rig upgraded to windows 8 yet?
I want to know about Battlefield, steam, diablo, skyrim, etc.
Trying to decide if its time to upgrade my OS.

Thanks

BF3, TF2, LoL, and Starcraft 2 all worked on my computer with SLI 580s.

Unfortunately, LoL and Starcraft 2 crashed when using my 6990, so I'm going to chalk that up to AMD driver issues.

I've mostly read that there are no noticeable performance improvements between 7/8. I upgraded my laptop and almost immediately installed Classic Shell because the Metro interface is just... Well... Anyway, I don't plan on upgrading my gaming PC from Windows 7.

The new stuff isn't really related to gaming, and performance isn't really improved, so there isn't really a compelling reason at this minute.

its on my system. performance is +/- 2%, nothing you will notice when gaming.

I saw a huge drop in performance in various games (Minecraft, Sims 3, Mount and Blade WB, etc) with the current AMD drivers (HD7970) and Windows 8. I didn't try the beta drivers.

Performance should be virtually identical once the driver issues are sorted out.

Minecraft seems to run the same for me (make sure you're using 64 bit java if you're running x64 and I do HIGHLY recommend the latest AMD beta drivers). I cant vouch for the other games you listed, but all of my games run identically well on 8 as they did in 7.

This is on 64 bit, of course.

Might I suggest trying Start Is Back? I feel like Classic Shell is a bit clunky. Start Is Back brings out the existing start menu code still left in Windows 8 and you can set it to boot right to desktop, disable the "charms", etc. It's essentially identical to 7's interface.

They have a free 30-day trial and it's only $2 for licenses for 2 PC's if you like it.

I play Skyrim and BF3 on my sig rig, they seem very smooth. There was a benchmark on some site, forget the address, that showed that though Windows 8 had a similar performance to Win 7, Win 8 had much less frame rate variation (i.e. dips), which resulted in smoother play, I've noticed it to a degree but it's nothing world shattering. The interface is easy enough to adjust to, imo, you just use the start page like a giant start menu pinned items list, you don't have to use metro apps (though I prefer some of them to desktop apps for security and stability - they are sandboxed and can't corrupt or slow the system), other than launching a program you mostly just use apps on the desktop as in previous Windows versions.

Like the others have said, pretty much what I have runs the same on 8 as 7. So no reason to upgrade, and no reason not to. At least where gaming is concerned.

I saw no performance difference on my rig, however, Joystick support for Planetside 2 is nonexistant.

You can't even launch the game with a joystick plugged in. It could be a SOE problem, or it can be a directX problem. You can get the game to run if you drag copy of a Win7 DLL to the game directory, but it still won't let the stick work.

I'll give it a look! Thanks for the suggestion.

I haven't run into any issues on my desktop running AMD6950. There were a couple opengl driver issues during the early betas, but the RTM release seems to have cleared them up.

I find the OS to be at least as good if not better than Win7 for my gaming needs.

I migrated all the computers at my place to Win8 and every game we have runs flawless.

So far every installed game runs flawlessly for me on Windows 8. No complaints as far as that goes.

After I upgraded my ssd drives, I went to Windows 8 full time. No problems, play BF3, UT3, World In Conflict, and valve titles.

Everything works as planned. And I got a bit of a baseline framerate boost.

Yeah, I'm using 64-bit Java and the latest version of the Optifine mod.

It was the GPU driver. I had some free time to play around with 8 on Saturday. Upgrading to the Catalyst 12.11 Beta seems to have fixed everything.
