Welcome To The New eBay

Don't you know they are loving that in Austin right now. All that orange!

What I never understood about ebay is why it isn't leaking gold out of every crevice in its buildings. Their customer service is horrible and charges rates equal to or sometimes greater than B&M auction houses (physical space rented, auctioneers and other staff paid) just for moving bits and hosting pictures. That's one poorly managed/inefficient company.

I miss the old, old ebay. I feel dirty selling stuff on there anymore.

It's like Apple, Facebook and Ebay had a three way baby. Hipster is definitely a way to describe it. I suppose whatever skin they use is fine, as long as the core product remains functional and enticing to use.

I like that at the very end there's a picture of a rolex. That's exactly what I want to buy from ebay.

Looks like s#!te, only use it for hard to find, next to impossible rare items, all of the commercial crap can get lost though.

I like the new design. I would love to see how the functionality is. So I wait...

Me thinks someone read their current and prospective customers incorrectly....that design sucks.

I'm sure this would look better on a tablet, but damn, that was making me dizzy, too. Bleck.
Also, hipsters + October = orange hipsters.

"Your browser is not supported for feed experience, please try with a modern browser."

This with FF v3.6.28 lol
Which wasn't EOL'd very long ago at all, and not to mention FF 15 wasn't worth a damn with the all the problems I had with the add-ons I use. The trade off isn't worth the upgrade til yet for me sadly, and ebay DAMN sure isn't worth it. Especially since they've long ago decided to snubb what MADE them: individual sellers.

That "new" ad page has some pretty horrific web design, but I don't understand what's supposedly "hipster" about it.

Why are you still using an EOL'd browser?

Ebay.... people still use that site..

Yep.

I use it to sell stuff after I've listed it in the [H] FS/FT thread for a week or two and it hasn't sold.

It's useful because it has such a huge audience, so SOMEONE is bound to want and bid on whatever stuff you're selling.

I also use it to pick up small, cheap tech items, like cell phone cases, and the like. There's a better supply of that kind of stuff there than anywhere else.

What are some of the horrific web design elements you noticed in the new design?

Everytime eBay makes changes, they seem to follow them up with another one or two percent fee increase. By the year 2020, they'll be taking fifty percent...

Not talking about the new design itself. (it looks kind of unremarkable compared to the old one, more of a minor tweak than anything else)

I'm just talking about the linked page... www.ebay.com/new

The way they implemented scrolling is all backwards and horrible if you want to draw in users attention to the actual content, and not just thrown them for an "oh this is different and odd" experience.

Web design is best when it is kept simple.

Use the minimal tech necessary to present a clean, easy to read and follow design.

When we start getting into complicated CSS style sheets, plugins, animations, sounds, etc. etc. it all starts going downhill. The focus of the webpage quickly becomes the geeky tech interest of the designer, and not the user who will be reading it.

A good, clean web design should be minimalistic. Whenever possible, rely on basic HTML and avoid java/flash/html5/etc.

The above may sometimes be necessary, depending on the purpose of your site, but they should only be used if ABSOLUTELY needed to support the information being conveyed.

Same principle as in Engineering. Always use the simplest method that works.

Or as the mnemonic all engineers are taught goes: KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid.

Dude, that is a preview site that just displays the marketing info. The actual site won't have that windowed scrolling thing. Is that what you were taking about? There was no actual test site to play around with and click links on.

I haven't given a crap about Ebay in probably a good 5 or 6 years. Buying something is a joke, because you are always going up against someone who has more money than sense. The people that "must win it at all costs" and drive the price up past what you will pay in a store with tax.

That same problem is "cool" when you are the seller though -- too bad when the auction is over you will always owe 15 or 20 dollars after all the fees.

I remember back in the old school days of ebay -- i.e their first year or two. Back when I had dialup and before things like paypal or any sort of verification was around. I sold a few hundred dollars worth of stuff on ebay as a kid, never paid any of the fees because all you ever needed to list stuff was an email address. No phone number, address, all that jazz.

Sometimes it is the only place to get something sold, after it stagnates on the hardforums, and craigs list.

And sometimes - if you are not in a hurry to get something - its not a bad place to lowball auctions. If it ends and you don't win, lowball the next. Sooner or later you might win something.

The new look is horrible. It has been dumbed down and is much less useful. The fonts are now about 3X the size as previous so you have to scroll more to see everything. After a quick search I can see only about 3 items in a list view now. People with 1080p monitors have the same issue and are disgusted to say the least.
On top of the cartoonish new look, many of the simple and useful check boxes are not easily visible so you have to scroll or click on Advanced and then click a few more extra times to get what you want. It's more work to do the same things as before.
Anyone with any common sense who really tries to use this new mess will be quickly frustrated. They tried to make it look better with no real regard to being useful.

Yeah, I only didn't a quick search. Haven't tried to seriously use it yet.

On first glance it looks mostly the same with a few things re-sized and shifted around a little.

Real use over time will tell how good or bad it actually is.

I can't figure out how to see the new version of the site, but from what I can peek at through that terrible scrolling....will take some getting used to.

IMO hipster is the new mainstream -- as in mainstream folks who want to be seen and acknowledged as "unique". Keeping up with the Joneses, but with different labels.

This brotha isn't interested in keeping up with them.

Ebay, for those times when you weren't quick enough on Gilt or Slickdeals(or any other sale/closeout site). :p
