The iPhone 5 was released yesterday, and as this is the Apple sub forum, I want to know what your upgrade path is. What do you have now, and are you upgrading to the 5? Are you going to get the more heavily subsidized 4 or 4S from a carrier? Purchasing the 4 or 4S used? Not upgrading and waiting for other phones to come out (5S/6, Windows Phone, Android, etc...)? Leaving Apple for other pastures?

I have the 4S and my wife has the 4. I'm going to keep my phone for now since I use it considerably less than I use to. My wife is going to sell hers now while the value is still good, but I don't know if she's going to upgrade to the 5 or go for the SGS3.

Going to wait until at least the next generation. For my uses, the iPhone 4 is still great.

My family has two 4's and one 4S. We will all be getting 5's pre-ordered tomorrow.

I have had the 4 since Feb 2011. I has gotten beaten up a tad but still looks good. A few quirks here and there but still a functioning phone. I will be preordering a 16gb white model asap. Then demote my old phone to be my car ipod.

I'm pretty excited for the 5. Although It's gonna be a rough day on Friday waiting to get home after a long day of work just to get my phone.

Have the iPhone 4 now and have had it since Sept 2010. Probably going to wait at least 6 months before I upgrade and by then it will likely be to whatever the android flagship is at that point.

I'm gonna keep my iPhone 4. Yeah, I'm gonna be that one dude still rocking one a couple of years from now. From my point of view, it does all I need: Pandora, Email, great texting, lite web browsing, and music playing. I don't need it to game, and I don't watch video.

If my iphone 4 wasn't constantly dropping calls, I wouldn't do anything. I might see if I can get a discounted 4s.

I'll be dumping both HTC Thunderbolts I have for me and the wife and preordering 2 iPhone5s. They will make nice additions to both of our iPad3s. It will be my first iPhone and I'm just so tired of Android.

I'm probably going to get one. I'm thinking about getting one in white. I've been using the same flip phone for the last 3 or 4 years. I think it's a LG.

I have a 64gb 4s and my wife has a 32gb 4. We are with AT&T and I am eligible for an early upgrade with a 2 year contract extension, so I'll be ordering me a black 64gb 5 and my wife a white 32gb 5 on Friday. Then I'll go about disposing of the old ones. I upgraded to a 4s last fall on launch, but my wife wasn't eligible at the time and chose to sit it out.

As I just got my 64GB 4S (Verizon) in Feb, I'm going to have to wait until next time (5S). However, I will likely buy it off contract so I can keep my unlimited plan on LTE. Even though I know I won't reach the 2GB limit if I don't stream, I don't like caps. They just make me nervous.

My girlfriend and I are on the 4 and have had them for over 2 years. I have been more than satisfied with this phone and have had hardly ANY issues with it. I know the 5's hardware still isn't the "best" that is out there in the android market but with how happy I've been I will be upgrading to the 5.

I do honestly dislike the design on the back of this phone though, not quite sure what they were (or weren't) thinking...

As we are in a very tight situation for money right now I think we will upgrade then sell our 4's to make up for the money lost as it should cover what our "upgrade" price with renewing the contract.

curious, what is better about the iphone 5 vs 4s? ive done some searching all i see is an extra row of icons, thinner, 20% lighter. No other improvements over the 4s?

Moving from my EVO 4G to the iPhone 5. Wife will be going from the EVO 4G Shift on Nov. 1st when she's eligible for the upgrade discount.

i'm wait till after new year hopefully get all the bugs out and than get some for decent price on ebay.

Bigger screen, depth and weight reduction as you mentioned, with an in addition of LTE, and further software optimizations. The scenario is similar to the jump between the 4 and 4S in that it wasn't the leap from 3GS to 4. Some people felt it wasn't "enough" and that their 4 (4S in this case) was still adequate. Whether your 4S is "enough" for your needs is the question.

The biggest problem going forward is that new flagships will have many similarities to their prior flagships; nothing revolutionary will be coming until probably new user interface (retina tracking, holographs, whatever). Sure, phones will get better based on whatever consumers demand (bigger screens, lighter phones, faster processors), but phones are so damn good now, the new and next just don't blow our minds anymore since the bar is set so high, while the ones we currently have still do a fine job. Going from a Moto Flip to a Blackberry was huge 7 years ago, but no where near as grand as going from an iPhone 4 to 5.

Don't forget the big one, quoted twice as fast speed. Ars and Anand have done a hands on and have noted that EVERYTHING about the new iPhone is faster. Both in a GPU and CPU context. So much so that there is rumors going on about it being an A15 inside as well as a big improvement to their graphics processors as well.

If it does have an A15 inside, then it will definitely eclipse everything else on the market in terms of raw power/speed.

I'll be pre-ordering tonight!

got my 4 the day it came out, have been using it ever since. The jump from 2g to 4 was immense. Though i still have a year left on the 4's contract, I'll be buying the 5 direct from Apple unlocked, and see what future iterations of the iPhone are like.

But to what real life extent? I know this is [H] and everything needs to be flagship, that the "numbers" need to be better, but this is what I was trying to say in my above post - even the "older" flagship phone can run everything. The Lamborghini Aventador is a much better car than the old Murciélago, but what does it really matter performance wise when the speed limit is 65?

LTE. Better low light camera, better image stability, faster operation when taking shots, dual band wifi, better sound, better mics, faster graphics, more memory. 720p front camera. Since the back is not glass, it won't damage as easily. Better hand feel, too.

It actually is a better phone in every way, except maybe size, depending on how you feel about that.

Watch this video: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6283/iphone-5-hands-on-pics-and-video

Direct impressions, and they mention in its usage where its faster. For what its worth, I agree with you that what is inside matters far less than tangible benefit. I think it's definitely going to be noticeable in gaming, and even down to basic tasks. I imagine task switching will be near instant now (I have some programs on A5x that are slow to do that,) maps will be quick and sharp, page rendering should be faster as well. And of course, in that vid, Anand's crew shows various speed improvements.

(Also, your Lamborghini argument doesn't exactly hold up. There isn't a speed limit. If you can build it to go faster, and make it go faster, you may go faster. It would be more accurate to say: you're on the autoban, did you build a better faster more light weight car, or did you just add a wing, put in more vents, make the bumper look cooler, and call it day?)

I'll probably pick one up next week, my Verizon 2 year ended today, so I'll just wait to get it. It doesn't make sense to get a different phone when I'm so used to the Apple infrastructure and everyone I know uses an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, so iMessage is very handy. I'm just curious about battery life...

had every iphone
lumia 900
one s and one x
galaxy nexus and sg2

currently using a lumia 710 since i sold my 4s

will be getting the 5
in white probably
they keep their values so well--the two biggies are the new screen and the A6

the ipad3 and iphone 4s colors are EXTREMELY different
im excited for the 5 display for that reason

I have a iPhone 4S 16GB. Probably going to stick with it, I'm a pretty casual user with my phone. (calls, text, emails, music). Bigger screen and LTE would be nice but they aren't must haves. I'll probably wait until the "iPhone 5S" Or whatever they'll call it.

I have a 32gb Verizon 4, I will probably be using it for another 2 years assuming nothing happens.

In two years the last of the families lines will be off contract, and the entire clan will be moving over to pre-paid, complete with buying (in my case) an unlocked GSM iPhone 5s (or whatever the next version is called).

I'm officially fed up with the stupidity of Verizon, and in reality of all the post-paid/contract based services. They are all moneygrubbing, terrible customer service bastards who no longer deserve my money.

I would switch sooner, but it's cheaper to keep my mom and dad on as shared lines then split them off just yet. (i.e. having them pay $10 each to share my plan is cheaper then them paying $25 each pre-paid)

Going to attempt to pre-order.

I have unlimited data so I'll be getting it at normal price. Hoping to sell my 4s to compensate.

I'll be keeping my 4, only because I can't afford the 5 just yet.

My girlfriend is preordering a 32gb 5 because her 4 home button is dying and she really wants it.

Assistive touch not a good option for her?

Anyways,

I will be getting the black 5 on verizon. I just have to wait till october-ish at least. Still deciding if I want the 32gb or or cheap out on the 16. I know I am going to be losing my unlimited data, so I want the 32gb so I can load more music on my phone instead of streaming like I do now. But if I go for the 32gb then I am going to have to wait a while longer since I also will be getting AppleCare+ on it, and have to save longer.

Is anyone here buying it out right?

Wife says that she wants an iPhone 5 so I'll be buying it outright. It looks to be a nano SIM though so I'll need to cut her micro SIM and than sand it down since they are 15% thinner. We were just at the AT&T store an hour ago, she was much more impressed with the Galaxy Note than the S3 so I don't even know what to say.

Why do people love iphone so much? When android is so much better. Not trying to start a war but I'm staying away from iAnything. Thats my next move.;)

i think you did start something

i've had almost all major phones from windows, android and iphone
it does everything i need it to do very well and very fast.
Finally it has absolutely THE BEST resale value of any phone brand
i've sold multiple phones on craigslist, here and xda and iphone keeps the value better by far in a year or more span.

I have it Jailbroken and using Activator to make a press of both volume buttons = the home button, but she really wants it, so why not? Even get to keep her grandfathered unlimited data on AT&T. She really just wanted to get the 4s months ago but I convinced her to wait.

Like many, I've had the 4 since its release in June 10. I'm happy with it, but, ATT charges us with the assumption that we are are using a subsidized phone. Since that is the case, I've upgraded.

Just seems stupid not to if you are on a subsidized plan and are eligible. Hell, don't open the package ands sell it for 200+ more than you paid for it.

The CPU is upgraded, keeping it relevant for future updates.

While the 4S will also be updated in the near term, if Apple history with iOS tells us anything, the last "good" update will be iOS6.

Managed to get 3 pre-orders within 25 minutes of the opening :)

1 for me, my wife, and my father in law. Next Friday is going to be like Christmas in September.

Got my pre-order in this morning at 3:20 eastern.
I have an unlocked iPhone 4 right now and I grudgingly decided to stick with AT&T. I really really wanted to switch to Verizon, but I couldn't swallow the $30 a month increase in my bill for the exact same plan.
