Anyone have any problems with RMAed WD hard drives?

I just RMAed a 250 GB WD RE4 drive and was very surprised when the replacement drive they sent me died during my raid 5 rebuild. Now I can't get any of the sata controllers I have to recognize it. Even worse, when I inspected the drive afterwards I noticed that the controller board on the HD showed noticeable signs of corrosion, which I assume is what lead to the death of the drive. Has anyone else had any problems like these?

You get refurbed drives when you do an RMA.

Almost all manfgs do this.

Just do another RMA.

At work we have had this happen 2 out of the last 3 multi drive Seagate RMAs we sent in this year. We have not had that happen with WDC. However we RMA far fewer drives to WDC.

Corrosion? Hmmm, all those flood drives must be working their way into the system. Shame there's no carfax for drive serial numbers...

Not always, in fact I've done over 10 personal RMA's with WD (bad sign?) and I've only once received a refurb drive. Did one two weeks ago for a 2tb GP and got a brand new drive manufactured on June 14th of this year.

You are very lucky. We have done probably 10 RMAs in the last 5 years and about 8 out of 10 were refirbs.

90% of all the drives we get back from WDC are refurbs, and 10-15% of them are DOA.
