I've addressed this. D3 Hell is easily soloable without trading for gear. This is where D3 takes it a step further and adds Inferno. Blizzard did not force you to go through Inferno. No one is forcing you to do this. They are also retuning Inferno and everything I've previously said about clearing Inferno applies here. No RMAH needed, no endless farming needed.
I guess it's RNG, but in the 45 hours or so I've played, almost all on one toon (57 wiz, ~15 monk), there is no way I'd be able to do anything solo in hell without having picked up weapons on the AH. Now that I'm in early Act 2 Hell I've actually gotten some decent DPS weapons to drop, but even those were incredibly mediocre and still about 15%-25% lower DPS than the staff I got off the AH (409 DPS), with stats not directly relatable to me.
I've gotten perhaps 2 blues in the last few days of playing that were moderate upgrades; other than that I've gotten nothing in hell usable for myself, and very little through NM either. That's including crafting dozens of items in an attempt to upgrade.
I'm a huge supporter of a world economy, and realize how much trading was involved in D2. But I never felt that trading in D2 was required to not feel like you're throwing spitballs on blues/champions. It was more to make yourself uber with a runeword, etc. D3 I've run around undergeared and overleveled in Act3/4 NM and Act1 Hell to try and get gear, but it hasn't worked for me unfortunately. And that is my biggest frustration.
