Are you experiencing a dearth of Doom? id Software is worried about just that possibility, as evidenced by today's announcement of Doom 3 "BFG Edition." Doom 3 is getting remastered and repackaged, with the "Resurrection of Evil" expansion and seven brand new levels, which id are wrapping up as "The Lost Mission."

Beyond remastering graphics, id's also adding Achievements, Trophies, and 3D. In the gameplay department, a "new check point save system" is being added, and the ever-frustrating flashlight issue is being resolved with "the new armor-mounted flashlight." If that weren't enough, the BFG Edition includes both Doom 1 and 2, so you can truly vanquish every single last demon in all of the space hells, all in one package. Finally!

PRESS RELEASE:

BETHESDA SOFTWORKS ANNOUNCES DOOM 3 BFG EDITION

id Software's Genre-Defining Game Returns This Fall with All-New Content

May 30, 2012 (Rockville, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that DOOM® 3 BFG Edition will be available this Fall and features DOOM® 3 and the Resurrection of Evil® add-on pack, both of which have been completely re-mastered. The package also includes hours of new content – seven new levels entitled 'The Lost Mission.' DOOM 3 BFG Edition is slated for release for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PC and PlayStation® 3 – marking the first time any DOOM game has ever appeared on the PlayStation® 3.

Re-mastered for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, this genre defining game and its expansion pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, 'The Lost Mission,' featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats.

DOOM 3, Resurrection of Evil, and 'The Lost Mission' have been optimized in 3D, featuring 5.1 surround sound, Xbox 360 Achievements, PlayStation 3 trophies, improved rendering and lighting, and a new check point save system allowing for smoother progression through the game. id® Software has fine-tuned the controls to bring the intensity of the DOOM single and multiplayer experience to the consoles, and DOOM 3 now features the new armor-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.

"DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release," said John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software. "Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it."

As a special bonus, DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM® and DOOM® 2 games, making it the definitive collection of the revolutionary games developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition has not yet been rated by the ESRB. For more information please visit www.facebook/Doom.

I'm guessing this is as a precursor setup for Doom 4. At this rate I'd expect Doom 4 to be at E3 in some way, shape or form.

Depending on the amount of work put into retexturing the game, I'd definitely be interested in this. Could care less about dumbass achievements and trophies.

Although as I read the press release again, it has been re-mastered for Xbox 360...so still 10 year old texture models. Fan-fucking-tastic.

Might pick this up. Never got the chance to play the expansion and I really liked the game.

If anything it will give us eyefinity/widescreen support properly, and something new for the modders to tinker with and make better. Or one of the injectors, ENB comes to mind.

Yeah, it takes the wind out of my sails pretty fast.

It sounds like they are really focusing on remastering the game for consoles. That confuses me a bit.. Seems to me, if you were going to remaster a game you would remaster it to take advantage of the best hardware available on the market to increase longevity. Adding in DX11 specific features along with bigger textures would make sense.

I'd be very surprised if the remaster could come anywhere where close to the fan-made texture packs already released.

Would be nice if they offered a bit more technical info aside from the usual marketing rhetoric.

LOL at : "Remastered for console"

I guess that means they are going to force 640x480 with no AA and shitty controls.

I had a lot of fun with Doom3, but one thing I remember about id games going to console is ... they generally don't go to consoles very well.

Anyone try to play Quake when they thought it was a good idea to bring it to the N64?

How would that make sense? The engine that Doom 3 runs on uses OpenGL. I agree that some super high resolution textures would be nice, but if they didn't exist prior to this, I doubt ID is going to create them all from scratch.

Really, this seems like ID trying to cash in on D3 for the current generation (IIRC, Doom 3 was released on the original Xbox) and adding in some extra goodies in the process (more ammo, proper widescreen support, duct tape mod and some extra levels).

I might be interested in this. I enjoyed D3 when it first dropped and never got around to playing the DLC Pack.

Never played Quake on N64, but they had some decent ones. Doom on the Jaguar was probably one of the best ever Doom ports, hands down. Doom64 was also pretty decent.

Rage was also pretty good on the consoles (better than the PC IMO, if not for the native control scheme alone)

EDIT: Is the trailer showing the "improved visuals"? I haven't played Doom 3 in awhile but honestly it doesn't look that much better to me...

admittedly from the trailer I'm not seeing a massive difference but I'm optimistic.

If you don't feel like waiting you can try Perfected Doom 3.

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1685073

Doom 3 redone from the ground up with Higher resolution support (only tried 1920x1200) improved gameplay/models/textures/sound, AA/DOF options. Lots of flare options you can disable at whim. Basically a "complete" mod for D3.

From the change list they didn't actually improve textures in that pack, but otherwise looks cool. I'm thinking I might try a Wolfen HD pack + Sikkmod + duct tape mod or something.

"Re-mastered for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3"

That sucks. But the first time I played Doom was for SNES.

I wish the Doom 1 and 2 could use the same engine as Doom3. IIRC there was a Doom2 mod for doom3.

Hopefully models will also recieve the "re-mastering" treatment. Surely they could benefit from more polygons or better yet Tessalation

It'd be nice if the new textures didn't make everything appear like it was plastic wrapped, but I'm sure that's more the engine than the textures itself.

My bad. I forgot they used OpenGL API for Doom 3. I'm sure the latest OpenGL would have some nice features that could be implemented into the remaster all the same. Still, since it's a remaster for consoles, I doubt they will be going "all out" to enhance the graphics.

Obviously a cash in.

Remastering a 2004 game for hardware released in 2005 is hardly anything to get excited over.

Unless the PC version takes advantage of newer hardware, this is of absolutely no interest to me.

I wouldn't mind playing it over again with drop-in co-op support. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Xbox version have this? (Think there might've been a mod or patch that made it available on PC too).

Yes, the xbox version had it co-op. Not drop in though. Also the Xbox had a different level set, so it's not 100% comparable to the PC version in that respect.

This isn't really even a cash in. This is all about generating some console interest in the Doom franchise before the release of D4. My guess is that Doom 4 will be more console oriented than id's past comments would suggest.

Never played Doom 3, so this seems appealing. Though that video doesn't look very "remastered".

Hoping they intend to improve on the audio quality. Most of the game's audio is grossly over-compressed — some effects dip into teen bit rates, which is pretty appalling. Unfortunately, the lowest common denominator platform here still uses fucking Stone Age DVDs, so I don't expect miracles.

I'll be interested to see how they improve the audio. OpenAL, which DOOM 3 used at some point, is supposed to be very good at doing positional audio but of course that doesn't help if the audio's dynamic range is compressed to hell which we've recognized it is in this game. The only problem I have with OpenAL is that it doesn't send audio to the subwoofer channel so you have to force bass redirection. I think RAGE had decent audio and as far as channel handling goes I don't need to force bass redirection as they have it properly set to send audio to my subwoofer channel. RAGE uses XAudio2.

Most people use skimpy speakers are headphones so I'll be surprised if there's any significant improvement in the audio since most people don't even care about it.

god,,, save points.. hate that.. seems theyre indeed just going after console market .... thinking of passing on this unless the reviews say its the best thing since sliced bread for PC players. Dont care about consoles..

Think Drako has a very good point also.

something to keep an eye on but so far Im not excited about it

Well most of the texture packs only cover the mars city level. Not to rag on the game but that's not much of an accomplishment considering how old the game is

Meh. A few changes I can already get on the PC version isn't going to make me buy this again. Once was a hell of a lot more than enough.

For "remastered" read "downgraded to run on consoles". iD sold out long ago, they haven't been relevant in ages.

Yeah I'm only bothering if this is a free update to those who already own it on steam (for example). As was previously mentioned, for us PC gamers this "remastering" is just a couple mods away.

I'm guessing this is as a precursor setup for Doom 4. At this rate I'd expect Doom 4 to be at E3 in some way, shape or form.

Agreed. Seems like they are trying to regenerate interest in the DOOM franchise as well as introducing it to the console gamers in preparation for DOOM 4

I really wanted to see D4 this year . . . but then again, we still have QuakeCon later this year so here's to hopes and wishes!

I wonder how much this release has to do with RAGE failing and how much it has to do with hyping the franchise for Doom 4?

50/50

new check point save system

LOL!

Id needs to start making good games again or GTFO. They are pulling a CoD and recycling stuff. OMG AMAZING!
