It looks like Google Fiber got the go-ahead to provide video services in Kansas City. This ought to be interesting, don't you think?

Google Inc. in making its application sent its clearest signal yet that it’s positioning itself to sell TV service in Kansas City and challenge cable service head-on. So besides bringing fastest-in-the-country home Internet service, the search and advertising behemoth could compete with cable companies on TV service.

hopefully this is just the beginning and google will start running fiber everywhere!

Fingers crossed that it's the whole metro area. Dish hasn't done much to piss me off but I welcome more competition! And if it makes internet more affordable as well, so much the better.

I'm having a tough time making up my mind where Google is going with this.

They are - IMHO - either:

1.) Concerned with the direction things are going with the open internet (or the lack thereof) and the potential Verizon/Comcast/etc. have to shut them out and are trying to build their own infrastructure (in which case we'll likely see more of it.

-or-

2.) This is part of some sort of experiment they will use to learn something about something when they build their future software products, and this service will disappear as quickly as it appeared in a few years, just like with past Google experiments.

I'm really leaning towards #2.

Google HAS to know that their core competencies are Software, not hardware (motorola) or infrastructure, and they HAVE to be aware of what has happened to past companies who have diversified to much outside of their core...

Let them have it. At least theyhave something.

Can you imagine having to live in Kansas without this? :p

Kansas City != Kansas!!!!

But F-bomb for the G to finally start rolling...!!! They'll give Time Warner and ATT a massive kick in the a$$... I personally know tons of people that will jump on this once infrastructure is up... KCK first then KCMO according to Google.. Yay for middle finger to TW.....

is't about half of it in KS though? :p

i cant wait until they save me from this shitty att bandwidth limit. I'm passing up 150gb pretty easily with family members streaming video all the time :(

I lived in KC (Missouri) for 11 years before moving back to Chicago. The city's quite alive and vibrant and very modern. Not exactly Chicago or New York, but it's not like Oklahoma City by any stretch of the imagination.

Kansas City is also in Missouri. Google's been in talks with KC for years when I was living there 6 years ago. I'm surprised that it was still going on now. Remember the April fools joke with Topeka renaming their city to Google a few years back?

I'm not sure why people are getting so excited. remember the recent flop that was google tv?? until they can get the content providers onboard.. all this will be is a really fast pipe to nowhere.

they HAVE to get the content providers on board.. which will mean the same bundling of tons of crappy channels to get the couple we want to watch, because thats the way the content providers want it.

i have to agree with the guy above who feels this is more of an experiment then anything
