It looks as though Microsoft's Bing search engine has taken over the number two spot from Yahoo. I'm not sure if this is because Bing is doing better, Yahoo is doing worse or both.

Microsoft Corp. has finally reached a long-sought and expensive goal — its Bing search engine now ranks second behind Google in the Internet's most lucrative market. Bing and Microsoft's other websites fielded 2.75 billion search requests in the U.S. during December, catapulting in front of Yahoo Inc. for the first time in the jockeying for runner up to Google Inc., according to statistics released Wednesday by comScore Inc.

Well Bing isnt a bad service at all, so it wouldn't surprise me that it would continue to grow. They are doing alot of interesting things over there.

Its funny though, when the article is about IE losing say 1 percentage point to other browsers, its big news, but when Bing shows a little growth, its time to find out how that could possibly be lol

That's not really "news" is it, especially considering that Yahoo! Search is now "Powered by Bing."

It's the default search on WP7 so I use it on my phone exclusively. It does just fine on the phone.

Bing is now a major part of the latest Xbox 360 update and a major part of the new Mango update for Windows 7 mobile. You're kind of forced to use Bing for a lot of the new services now. You have to wonder if that factored into it.

At this point I'd assume the Yahoo users who had resorted to using their search have all grown used to searching with Google in the address bar (Chrome/IE) or the search bar in Firefox.
They're losing their lazy searchers who came there for something else :)

Not really any different from Android in this regard.

Because it is the default of bloody everything and most people are too lazy to change their defaults to a search engine that isn't crap.

I know- I'm just emntioning it becuse I'm sure that factored into the increased use of Bing- all that happened the last 6 months of 2011.

Yup. First think on a fresh install of 7 is go and change everything from bing/hotmail/bing whatever.

Bing is far from Crap.

You are right..a search engine that fails miserably at even finding the proper links to microsoft's own products while google does is far worse than crap.

Thanks for correcting me.

Well Bing has been growing slowly but surely for some time now. Sure having it as the default search in all of Microsoft's products probably is the primary reason but at the same time Bing probably works as well for most people as Google these days, it does for me, I used both constantly but Bing is my default and it does what I need 95% of the time or more.

I think one of Microsoft's biggest advantages right now is that people are underestimating it. The article mentions how Microsoft has lost $7 billion in its online division since 2008 and that Windows is still its most important product and that Google is the most profitable "Internet" company. Well Microsoft still makes a lot more money than Google as is even more profitable even after spending $7 billion on online services. And while Windows is still Microsoft's most important product they just sold 500 million copies of Windows 7 in about 2 years, which is kind of good for you most important product I'd say. If Apple or Google ever sold 500 million of any one version of a product (remember Google doesn't sell Android) people would be proclaiming the return of Christ.

I do Bing searches for Microsoft products and technology all of the time since that's how I earn a living and get pretty much the same results as I do with Google.

havent had issues finding what i've needed to find with bing. not only that bing rewards me with points that i can redeem for gift certs.

call me when google starts doing that, and *maybe* i'll switch back

Alexa shows that the audience for Bing is mostly over-represented by 45-65+ year olds. This tells me that the popularity is because of some default installs that haven't been changed.

In other words, nothing to see here.

There's a third option. Bing's the default search engine unless an OEM changes it before you get your computer.

I think currently Toshiba installs Chrome and Google as the defaults on it's machines, that was all part of the anti-trust litigation over Microsoft's monopoly status on desktops.

the bing version of google street view is pretty good. often it is much more up to date. also, are there any other search engines left except bing as a competitor to google? funny, I talked about this today with someone and we remembered altavista and other prehistoric sites lol.

I only use Bing on my WP7.

Funny thing to me, is that it seems Google has made the most changes since Bing has gotten more popular. But each "improvement" google makes to its search, the less I like it. Not of fan of google image search anymore. Also don't care for google instant or preview. Don't like most aesthetic updates they make either.

I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show?

BING!

Got the shingles real bad senior year?

BING!

I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore?

BING!

I usually use google for my searches, occasionally I use bing. Sometimes google returns to many yahoo answers type of links when I search.

Actually, Hotmail is great service, also Bing is not that bad. Seems just there are also like AMD vs Intel fanboys of the other thing yelling just that the stuff they use is better. I didn't notice any notable difference when searching through bing or google.

As someone mentioned upthere, Bing and Yahoo should be taken as same, because Yahoo uses Bing database as well.

I should also state that bing is my first stop when I'm planning a trip. Bing travel IMO is the best thing about that search engine.

But I don't have a hotmail account, and gmail is fine for live, so gmail makes sense, bing search is ok, but just different, and i'm far more familiar with manipulating google searches, shopping results etc. to do what I want than bing. Though just poking around now, some of the extra services like maps, images and shopping are much more basic (lacking streetview etc.) and even though some of them are new editions bing is still behind google.

Switching from it only takes 2 clicks (In IE) and it even asks you to set defaults on first run. So it's not like I have to spend great effort in changing something. As theres no advantage in using bing, theres no point going for it. Plus theres something very..."old" internet about the page layout (plus it doesn't go with my desktop color scheme :D)

I think a lot of people are using it because they view Google now in the same way people viewed Microsoft 10-12 years ago.

And if they could you'd accuse them of brand pandering and self promotion. :p (just messin' with ya).
If MS is including every install from all platforms, then the **AAs could learn a thing or two from MS about including all data (though it would really hurt their case). :p

I believe that part of it could be the stigma of lack of Google privacy making a fair number of savvy people look elsewhere for their info. I usually set my default encrypted Google, sometimes Bing, but mainly EG (I also set my folks' default search to encrypted Google), but if you think about it, differing search results can actually lead to more info at times. If the other "privacy" search engines had decent results I'd use them more. Some have come a long way over the years, but still have a long way to go to be considered alternatives.

Then again I also use SRWare Iron, which is Chrome with all the garbage stripped out (using it now, v16 fixed needing workarounds with the chrome web store) & Palemoon instead of Chrome & Firefox (haven't tried Waterfox yet). I do use IE9, but usually with another front end, and plain IE9 only when a site won't render, or flat out refuses to run in anything else.

When all is said and done, isn't one our top [H]ard mottos "competition is always good for the end user"? I say we let them push each other to do more (for us).

Bing didn't grow. In the last year it's essentially flat. Yahoo simply keeps shrinking. The source data clearly shows that point.

Microsoft simply is throwing good money after bad. They should exit the search market. It doesn't matter if you prefer Bing, they are wasting money,

Exactly. Look what a failure the X360 is for Microsoft. Talk about a wasting money on a product that's bound to fail.

MS has been whoring out Bing like a Thai hooker, no wonder it's market share has grown. Hell, I used to go on msn.com to read some of the lighter news headlines, but anymore you can't even do that, cause all it is, is links to results on Bing. Very annoying!

I agree with you over some stuff but I think the bing has much better look/layout I like the pics changing in the background and the design of the site. Yes you can have pics on front page on google as well but it's not same thing.

MS can afford money wasting.;)

Because Google never whores out its services. All companies whore out their products, it's called advertising. I'm always amazed when supposedly informed people decry competition like it's some sort of evil thing.

Yep, the bing maps/satellite/etc are really good, and I actually prefer them to google.

I still use google for search though.
