Ok. So if I get this right, I can basically start a "new game" with a new server? Once I create a character on that server I play out the whole game on that particular server? Basically, a character and a server are locked?

Unless they introduce server transfers in the future, and then a fee is usually attached to the service.

Correct.

Uh... ok. So this guy who I work with who convinced me to buy the game in the first place... if he isn't on the exact same server you guys from [H] are on, we can't play together?

No, you cannot. Think of them as mirror universes. Exactly the same in every way, but the people in them are different and cannot interact.

Here I was under this delusion that MMORPG meant a game where *everyone* was in the *same world* online at the *same time*. Yes this is what I thought WoW was.

"Everyone" means millions of people. It's just not feasible to have that many together at the same time. So it's broken up into "realms" or servers.

OK but my impression when looking at the different exotic server names was that each server represented a different planet or sector of the world. That's why I had no idea which one I should choose, and why I was confused as to why I didn't select my character/video/game options first. Again, dumb questions I know for anyone who has played a MMO but to me it's all new.

anyone have the problem where it stops letting you click on anything on the screen? I had this happen quite a few times. I know about th cntl + U ordeal but just wondering if a permanent fix is planned. What level are you guys? I'm 30 and just about done with tatooine.

I had an issue where my curser disapears. I just hit escape and good to go

Update on My Low FPS friend's issue:
System Specs:
i5 2500k
HD6950
16gigs ram
Problem:
averaging 20 fps with shadows turned off.
fps doesn't seem to improve if you change the settings.
his resolution is 1366x780

I have the same exact specs, i5, 16gb ram, hd6950 2gb. 1400 x 900 res
Graphcis settings set to highest. I dunno what my FPS is because I never checked, but it has run super smooth in every game area.

yeah, I don't have a clue why his FPS is so low. a 6950 should dominate this game at that resolution

Are these laptops or something? Or are you using a TV with your PC? Those monitor resolutions are extremely low.

For one thing, the highest settings aren't that. There is no difference between medium settings and high settings. High resolution textures are basically disabled in the game right now. Sometimes when you set the textures to high, it doesn't load the medium textures and what you see are low resolution textures. Furthermore I've heard that the shadow slider is reverse where high is low and low is high. Off is still off.

he's playing on a tv

No I'm not using a tv, but I have a small monitor. I'm saving for a nice dual 24 inch monitor setup :p

Has this been confirmed? I've been hearing that setting the game at Medium settings instead of the highest setting makes the game look better.

It's true. I can confirm it as can my girlfriend and friends who are playing the game. Once you initially setup the game it tends to default to low textures. Even if it says medium or high, I don't think it's actually correct. It doesn't reload the textures switching between medium and high. So set to low, then raise them to medium. You'll see the game actually reload the video and bam. You are done. Thing you'll notice the most is the ground is a lot more detailed. Flooring no longer all has an almost glossy like finish. It will not vary. Sometimes matte, glossy, etc. depending on where you are. Vegetation / grass also looks better. It does a bit for the weapons and characters, but not much. Texturing on buildings and vehicles is better as well.

Someone was talking about the higher textures being disabled because of the foot print of the game in memory. I don't know if that's true, but with only SWTOR running, my system runs at 5.1GB of memory usage.

Really? 5.1GB? My god...

still, I mean my system idles with like 1.5 GB in use. 5.1GB might be the highest I've ever seen for a system running a game.

I just checked it again and SWTOR takes about 1.5GB of memory. Though the system was idling at 3.42GB of memory and with SWTOR running it was sitting at 4.6GB of RAM. The 5.1GB of RAM usage did include a media player and some other things I had forgotten about. MSI Afterburner, etc. SWTOR seems to run in two processes. One which is about 250MB of so and the other which varies from 1.0GB to 1.2GB. Perhaps more.

I'm still puzzled by my friend's fps, I installed the latest drivers and everything. His comp plays BF3 fine, but just chokes on TOR

MMO's aren't as smooth as FPS games typically are. Despite their rather bland graphics the worlds are much, much larger and that takes a toll on performance. My machine runs BF3 smoother than TOR as well. Well for the most part. At 7680x1600 that changes. TOR is playable, BF3 isn't. At 2560x1600, BF3 is actually faster and of course far better looking. Call of Duty has tiny maps and still runs better than BF3 does. Graphics quality aside, it's more simplistic visuals, lack of vehicles, and small maps with low player counts allow it to run at 7680x1600 fully maxed out with AA and AF in game maximums. I can get 60FPS+ all the time.

still, at such a low resolution and low settings being run by a hd6950. This should be a non issue

exactly, I don't see any reason it should be at 20 fps especially after updating drivers etc.

Some in game settings like the shadow settings can cripple your performance. As I understand it, this is a bigger problem on the AMD side.

yeah, I had read that too, but I tweaked all the settings in pretty much every way possible with a focus on the shadows. It still was around 20 fps average.

What are the rest of the system specifications? What are the game settings?

It is, I played the game on my 4870 and mobile 6770, the game plays like absolute crap with shadows on, with it off I can have max everything and no stutter.

IIRC I had every graphical option maxxed including shadows plus I was forcing 4x ADAA in the AMD control panel and TOR usually hung out around 50fps on my 6950. I haven't played since the weekend of the head start though.

In case anyone didin't know, CRTL+SHIFT+F to show FPS (in bottom left corner).

I'm getting around 25-35 FPS at 1920x1200 with shadows on high. Putting shadows on low I get around 40 FPS. This on the fleet where I have the lowest FPS.
Check and make sure you aren't focing AA or other settings as those seem take a big hit in this game.

CPU: i5 2500k
MB: MSI P67A-C43 B3 rev.
Ram: 16GB Corsair 1333MHz
Video: MSI Twin Frozr II HD 6950

I tried all the settings, best performance was
low everything
no shadows and of course no AA
resolution is 1366x780

Something is going wrong, I have no where near your system and am getting better performance at a higher rez, why such a low rez?

not my system, it's my friend's and he's using a tv as a monitor. I am at a loss for why his performance is so low. It doesn't make sense at all.

Then you didn't have it maxed. Again the textures and shadow options don't line up with their control panel settings in the game.

Maybe. I'm running at 1680x1050 and had every slider set to max.
