Transformer Prime, when and how much?

i also preordered from best buy after the cancel.... i doubt they will ship on release date.

With a release date of 12/19 Asus is going to be hard pressed to get enough units out in time for Xmas demand. The hype is strong and the reviews generally good. I'll wait till after the holidays probably before trying to get one.

Same type of stuff happened with the first one (although it is speculated because of the japanese earth quake they had massive shortages). I'm not suprised the Prime will be hit by similar delays like the first one, although this one shouldn't be too bad.

Looks like it is happening all over. Also..there is an update on Anand about the Wifi isuse he had. Interesting results for sure...

anand has an update about the wifi issue. he got a replacement to test from asus and look like its good to go. but he did have problems, and turning off some of his wifi APs fixed it.

Ive got 2 preorders with different vendors.Maybe if there is a shortage,Ill flip one on Ebay..Go capitalism.. :)

That's the only thing I hate about this prime...it's like a repeat of the first transformer. I could find one no where and ended up buying another tablet. I hope Asus plans ahead this time and properly anticipates demand. Also, I hope vendors don't try to take advantage of customers by over charging for this device (not that I will fall for that nonsense).

It's called manufactured demand. Asus is limiting supply on the Prime just like they did for the first model to drive interest/hype. With the first one, they blamed the earthquake in Japan on part supply issues. Then we found out later all the parts were made in Taiwan -- a questionnable PR move from a "moral" standpoint, but it gave them an excuse for the lack of supply they were intentionally causing and likely bought a few sympathy purchases. "If I can't get one, it must be good, right?" Etc, etc.

Don't worry, as soon as demand has peaked (probably right after Christmas) Asus will flood the channel.

Yep. Sad. I got my pre-order in, so I can just wait. Never know....if they keep me waiting too long, I might end up canceling.

How much is Nvdia selling Tegra 3 SOC? I really like the form factor and specs of Transformer Prime, but I still can't justify the $650/$750 price tag especially when I got X220 tablet for $800 something. I know they're 2 completely different beasts, but I can't see myself buying it though my wife would really like it. Hopefully, Ivy Bridge and Win 8 creates bigger separation in prices in the market segments. Eh, I don't know I might break down and get it still once I see it in a store. It does look really good.

 Good to know my x201 has no resale value whatsoever.

I paid more than three times that. At least I have the peace of mind that comes from knowing they'll replace it if I run it over.

I just did... With all the traveling i'll be doing around that time of year, i'm not sure where i'll be to greet the UPS guy. I can wait. Besides- at a $499 price tag, they're going toe-to-toe with the iPad which has considerable traction with consumers- yes, we all know that the Transformer is the superior product in the lineup, but we're not the average consumer- after the initial surge of geek preorders, I'm suspecting interest will taper off a bit and the price will drop. Wishful thinking? Maybe :)

What type of time are we talking about? I never noticed the original Transformer drop in price up until about a month ago.

Windows tablets have gotten a LOT cheaper and better this year. I paid around $2k for my x220t but that was a fully loaded machine, i7, 8G and an extra battery. That was 6 months ago, and it's a little cheaper now but $2k for a business class design like a ThinkPad in a convertible tablet with this kind of hardware is just pricing that hasn't occurred to this year. I've paid more than that for a much less capable HP tm2 consumer level device just 16 months prior. Even pure Windows tablets that used to be over $2k are not hitting half the price.

I do not think asus really minds it coming in before or after xmas.

People will have money before Xmas and people will have money after Xmas

they will sell just as much I bet no matter when it arrives.. as long as it arrives before another quad core or ICS Tab

I wouldn't expect a significant price drop until their next version is ready to come out. You will see some sales maybe but probably like $20-$30 off. It will be more of a store sale than a ASUS price drop. My guess anyway.

Rumor mill says this thing might come out next year due to Wifi issues. Honestly sick and tired of Asus constantly delaying this thing now, might as well wait 2-3 months and see what the iPad 3 has to offer at this point...

Are we even going to see an ICS device in the US in 2011? Google sure knows how to totally fuck up a product launch. If they knew their hardware partners were not ready, they shouldn't have announced ICS when they did. This is just like their online services which are perpetually in beta.

The high cadence release schedule is part of the Google mantra to make it appear that Google is moving more swiftly than its competitors, even when the releases aren't fully baked and Google can get away with it because it doesn't charge for most of software.

Bit late to the party I suppose but I'm going to be picking one of these up as soon as humanly possible. Wish I had made the decision back when I could actually try to get a pre-order in. It sucks just checking the "Notify when available" checkbox everywhere.

That's what I'm doing.. judging by the weaker GPU tegra 3 has in comparison to iPad 2.. I'll just wait.

With the tablet market anything you buy, Apple product or non Apple product, it will be obsolete in less than a year. I can see this going on for quite a while especially since Apple now has some decent competition from the Android sector. This is all good for the consumer of course. :)

Well this is true of any computer hardware. The main issue is how easy is it to upgrade the OS so that at least you can keep that current.

Tablets, and Transformer 1 & 2 in particular, are a bit of a special case in that, as opposed to a car, a PC or a gaming console, there is esentially no software or feature that is available or that will run significantly better on the new device. When you buy a new tablet, you're buying better performance, a bit lighter weight, maybe a better design or battery life; you're not buying the ability to DO anything differently or new. It's a bit like buying a new PC that has a faster processor with the exception that all the available software will still run on the old PC.

Its only obsolete when the customer cannot do what the tablet was purchased for, and for some that could mean a few years time ;)

Not true at all. Newer models of tablets don't make older models obsolete. People are still buying iPad 1 and it still runs lots of software.

I have a question for those with a previous Transformer or any of the other Android tablets. One of the things I plan to do with my Transformer Prime, assuming it is ever released, is stream videos off my network to it. How would I accomplish this in the current Android Tablet scene? We're talking everything from 1080p MKVs to .m2ts to 480p AVIs and alot inbetween.

I was under the impression that there was now a VLC version for Android but that doesn't seem to be quite the case now that I investigated a little bit. I know with an iPad 2 I could use VLC Streamer and it's not the absolute best quality or speed, but it works and works well for my iPhone.

In a perfect world it would work just like it does on a PC where I browse network shares and then load the video. I would hate for this to be a pipe dream, otherwise I might spend the money on something else.

For those interested, just received my Amazon order update on my 32g champagne pre-order with shipping soon with an expected delivery date of December 21.:D

tnt0303: Cool. Is yours coming directly from Amazon.com or from a vendor selling through Amazon? I ordered mine at Amazon, but another vendor is selling.

I can't seem to find the keyboard dock any where for sell in the US. I know Amazon.De has/had the Transformer Prime available for pre-order with keyboard dock included in both colors and SSD sizes.

Also, here are the links for the keyboard docks

Grey dock - http://www.amazon.com/Asus-Transfor...d_t=201&pf_rd_p=1332792902&pf_rd_i=B0067PLM5E

Champagne Dock - http://www.amazon.com/Asus-Transfor...d_t=201&pf_rd_p=1332795242&pf_rd_i=B0067PLNRQ

I've read in the past that the 1st gen TF dock would be compatible with future versions of the TF. Seeing as they have docks specially made for the Prime now I'm wondering if that is still the true. Can anyone confirm this one way or another?

I use Plex for my Roku and they have an Android app I use on my TF. I believe PlayOn is also an option, but since I already have my movies streaming with Plex I haven't bothered to look into it.

The prime dock only works with the prime and the prime only works with the new dock.

Anyone know a place to get the Amethyst Gray colored version of the Prime for a decent price (at or below MSRP) preferably before xmas? I have someone who wants to buy me one for a holiday gift but they want me to point them towards the right one, so they get it right. I don't see it available on Amazon and Newegg seem to be crapping out on me.

You're going to have to get in line like everyone. We will see if asus is purposely creating high demand by making too few.

Wish I could say the same. I just got this e-mail from GameStop.

Asus lost a sale today to Apple because of their limited launch or whatever. Honestly my six year old son will like the Ipad better due to more apps, but I wanted the Transformer to tinker around with.

Got mine yesterday, unfortunately it went straight to the Christmas wrapping station and put under the tree...Can't wait to open packages Saturday!
