A new indie game announced today that they are starting a quite different campaign to get their new game out there.

The Game: Afterfall - Insanity

The Campaign: You can pre-order the game for $1 and if 10 million people catch on and pre-order the game everyone will get the game for just the $1. There was talk of donating some of the money to charity but I didn't quite follow it.

The game looks pretty cool for an indie.

They could have done abit better with translation, but i'll let that slide

I like indie companies, I'll give it a go

While 10 million is a really high goal that is going to be hard to reach, if they can hit that number it could change how much we pay for games.

So we pay a $1. If they get 10mil we get it for $1 and .10 cents of each $1 goes to charity. If they don't get 10mil, no money to charity and we pay full price...? correct?

What is full price? While a $1 is nothing, i don't want to get hit with another $60. He only said "$10 would be a great deal too" not that it would be $10.

About the game, i love the look/art theme. Looks like it will play like Dead Space based on 3rd person movement.

This game looks pretty cool, but uhhh 10 million pre-orders? That's quite a projection. Can a game like COD even do that?

apples to oranges. Battlefiled pulls away from that as well as many don't like FPS, plus price. For a $1 i'd be willing to give almost any game a chance. And they add the charity thing. I don't know what charity though.

I think price plays a factor, but I think marketing and brand recognition is even a bigger factor. I use COD as an example because these games are the epitome of marketing/brand recognition hype. And to achieve these high pre-orders, you're going to be looking at these factors. Think about all the free software out there floating around in the net. Or better yet, take a look at all the pay your own price games like the humble bundles. The humble bundle 3 has racked up around 2 million dollars to this day(according to wikipedia). Even if everyone paid 1 dollar for each bundle that is 2 million purchases - about a fifth of what these guys are projecting. It's going to take a lot of marketing/viral spread for this to take off

in for 2

if it works great, if not, who cares, its 2 bucks

Except you won't be getting your copies for 2 bucks if it doesn't work ;). It most likely will be more, for a price they haven't even stated yet.

watch the video, he explains it @ 1:15.

Full price is $34.90

I wonder if there would be a chance to opt out of paying full price and letting them keep the dollar even. I just haven't seen enough game play to decide yet.

The way I understood it was that if they don't get to 10 million, your 1 dollar will be donated to charity and you'll have the option to purchase the game for full price, minus the one dollar. Granted though, it's still not entirely clear in the video that's what's going on, that's just how it sounded to me.

It says on the website that if they dont reach the 10 mill goal, all $$$ goes to charity

uhh, 10 million seems kind of steep, even at $1.

minecraft shits publicity, has nearly 4 million copies sold... but only 15 million registered users total after years. i expect people to buy multiple copies but i'm still somewhat doubtful.

So these "indie's" need $10 million dollars to support their efforts?

If there is ten on the team, that's a million each...

Game industry is getting pretty greedy.

Nice studio for "indie's", i'm sure they just paid for that with side cash from their real jobs...

1 million pre-orders would have been more reasonable, however I think that'll even be a feat for these guys. I would have bitten if it was a dollar period, I don't see these guys getting 10 mil pre-orders anytime soon. And like it's been said, I already played dead space.

agreed, they need to be a bit more realistic before I can support them

They will get some 10k to 20k orders. Some people will buy the game, the rest will lose their money.

Make it 1 million preorders and I would be all over this. 10 million seems a little steep. Even some of the greatest games of all time didnt sell 10 million copies.

These guys say 10 million units sold globally right? Not just in the USA. Anybody know any global sales numbers for the big name games?

The problem I see is that they aren't doing much PR / advertising outside of what happens to get spread around the web and to get "Battlefield / modern warfare" type sales volume, we're talking cross-sales on consoles as well as advertising on mainstream TV and cable.

10million units sales target but only word of mouth net-vertising? The way they have it setup basically makes it impossible to get the numbers they are talking about.

The numbers for BF3 were less than 1.5m (pc/console) pre-orders and around 2m (pc/console) for MW3 in the U.S. alone

And they were also 50-60$. This is a dollar.
And everyone knows about those two games, this is the first I've ever even heard of this game. Regardless, this game will eventually be 35 bucks when they don't hit their absurd goal of 10m pre-orders.

And now you know about this game. I would say mission accomplished for them. It is not an absurd amount for its price.

Indeed, it did put the game on my radar but I won't be pre-ordering just to pay a dollar less at launch. Hell I don't even want the game but for a dollar I do. I'd take bets to see if they even hit 1m pre-orders.

game looks awesome!
but lol no way they will reach 10,000,000 preorders. only 17K now, LOL.
My guess is they ran out of money and even if they get 500,000 ppl in on the deal, that's an extra $500,000 dollars to help them get the game done.

10 million? Not going to happen. Not even games like GTA4 or Black Ops break 6 million sales on the first week, let alone preorders.

It's a very interesting idea though and one that gamers worldwide should get behind IMO. If for no other reason than to get other game devs thinking about another sales model that might be viable. I'll probably sign up to lose a buck in the effort if the charity is legit.

Imagine if Bethesda did something similar (asking more than a buck obvy) with Skyrim? Instead they decide to charge $60 and infest it with DRM so that people like me, a long time fan, aren't even going to buy the damn game.

In for 1. $1 to charity even if we don't get the game for $1 is a great deal. I like the look of the screens and videos, seems like an interesting game. I might even consider paying the full price if they don't hit their goal. Thanks OP.
