Dark Souls Will Eat Skyrim's Face @ IGN

they are about to start the live stream, they will be at the very beginning.

I don't see how what games you played as a kid has to do with what games you play now. Playing Ninja Gaiden and Contra back when you were a kid doesn't make playing Barbie Magic Makeup Ponytail Party as an adult any less soft.

Honestly it appears that with Skyrim, they focused too tryhard on making the game look so good that they forgot to put an actual game underneath.

What?! How in the hell would you know this? In all the gameplay footage that has been released so far, exactly what indicates that there 'no game underneath'? lol

Demon's Souls is the type of game where it is only hard cause things are unknown. Once you 'know' they are really simple. .

That could be said about any game though. I think death counts are a pretty simple but reliable way to determine difficulty. Most people are used to dying only a handful of times before they're able to get through a level or a boss. If they have to die dozens of times to get through a stage, they're going to see it as a difficult game...and rightly so.

I also beat Ninja Gaiden/Contra on NES when I was a kid. I thought they were very tough, NG especially. Had to die countless times before I finally got through it. Most of my friends either couldn't or simply didn't have the patience to beat it. DS is the same way, I probably died over 100 times by the time the game was finished. I got no problem calling it a 'very difficult game'. What else are they putting out these days that's harder?

I don't know. I played NG on the XBOX and it was suppose to be very hard and I had no issues beating it within a week.

I'm with you on the next-gen Ninja Gaiden, I didn't think it was that hard and I was pretty surprised after beating it that it had attained such a reputation for being too difficult. The original NG was a different story though. I literally had to memorize when and where every enemy came from before I could pull it off.

i will add this to the boss fights, they are very very very scripted (duh) but its easy to beat them once you figure out their moves. what makes it hard is the controls, imo at least. (demon's souls)

Skyrim and Dark Souls will not even come CLOSE.

The only difference will be challenge. IGN is also a horrible source for gaming; their allegiances lay with whoever gives them advertisement funding.

Skyrim will be amazingly immersive, incredibly expansive, and relentlessly brutal in its approach to Sandbox RPG'ing. It will be the Tour De Force/Piece de Resistance for the Elderscrolls series.

Dark Souls, on the other hand, dictates challenge as having you restart a whole level after dying and doing the same mundane tasks over and over again to accomplish your goals. The true challenge lies in the bosses--even then, it's not a challenge, it's just timing. Demon's Souls is the EXACT SAME WAY. The world will be mundane and bleak; you will be forced to farm stupid grindstones to upgrade your weapons to newer weapons with ridiculous jRPG names such as Cool Sword+1, Cool Sword+2, Cool Sword+3, etc., each grind taking an indefinite amount of time for just a few more points of damage.

That's not challenge, that's monotony and lack of creativity.

I will be buying both, however, because the bosses in Demon's Souls were actually somewhat difficult compared to most games bosses. I'm sure Dark Souls will be delivering on this. The death penalty in these games, however, far outweighs any good--it's repetitive and pointless.

I honestly expected it to score at least a 9.5 from all the hype surrounding the game in that office. I've been watching streams from several different players and the general consensus is that the game is harder overall but less frustrating due to the location of the bonfires. The bonfires are spread out when exploring but it seems they usually give you one relatively close to a boss as I haven't seen someone spend more than 10-15 mins for another chance. This is a much better design than the archstone system in DS where you'd have to spend upwards of an hour on some levels to get another shot.

HARDER than Demon Souls? Wow.
I never pay full price (always wait and grab'em on steam sales) but I did for Demon Souls and will for Dark Souls. To each their own but IMO this alone made the PS3 worth it. It's the only console game Ive played for more than 4 hours. Well, okay, that and Drake's Fortune games.

Yeah, it's weird. The review actually reads better than a 9.0...and for the 5 categories it's 3 9.5's and 2 9.0's...

No one knows shit about what game is better and what they are better at. Nobody will know until November at least.

You know what they say about opinions... And fanboi's are full of them.

I agree, and reusing Gamebryo screams sheer laziness.

Honestly it appears that with Skyrim, they focused too tryhard on making the game look so good that they forgot to put an actual game underneath.

Wow, Fail got banned?

Skyrim doesn't even look good IMHO, it's just a step up from the older revisions of the Gamebyro engine.

Dark Souls/Demon's souls are pretty primitive when it comes to graphics but the dark mood and sombre palette render the simple graphics very powerful. In any case, they are completely different games and the IGN article was MEANT to be inflamatory.

Dark Souls, like Demon Souls, is a hack 'n' Slash action game and no RPG. You can't compare the two, console weenies.

It's an action/RPG game. Specifically an action/dungeon crawler. And the epitome of why one still needs a console. There is nothing like this game on PC. And that's a bad thing.

It's deeper than any straight action game I know. And it's not twitchy. The combat is very strategic. Hack and slash does not adequately describe the game.

Yes, it does. I own Demon Souls and I will say once again it is not an RPG. Diablo is more RPG than DS and Diablo is just RPG Lite. I like Demon Souls but only an idiot would do an article comparing it with Skyrim and then claim it will be a better RPG than Skyrim.

Exactly. Its IGN fluff at its lamest.

I agree, but I don't think you can safely call it a hack 'n' slash as you can't mindlessly smash buttons at every enemy.... there is quite a bit of dodging/blocking/planning involved (or learning from death that ensued when you didn't dodge/block/plan, lol)

It's RPG Lite as you say as Diablo is... and I wouldn't compare it to Skyrim directly.

Skyrim will get my purchase, Darks Souls will not. I don't play games that are made unnecessarily difficult with the sole intent of being a selling point to the "hardcore". In terms of sales, Skyrim will dominate this nitch game, regardless of what review it gets.

Your purchase cannot save Skyrim's face.

Dovahkiin!!!

I can't wait to beat demon's souls and then play Dark Souls... and then buy Skyrim and play that too. FTW

Then you got trolled. The article writer said himself through the live feed that the article was meant to be parody of trolling/flaming game comparisons and it was meant to be humourous by comparing two very different games using it as a lauching pad to talk about the features of only one of the games.

Comparing Dark Souls to Skyrim is like comparing Diablo 2 to Final Fantasy. Anyways, I'm sure that Skyrim will be a lot of fun but I doubt that I'll buy it. Oblivion was too damn easy for me with the whole level scaling and it really made the game too easy and ruined the immersion factor for me.

Maybe I'm just greedy, but i don't want multiplayer in Skyrim.

I will definitely check out dark souls, I wasn't planning on getting it, but all the reviews point to a "Must Have Title".

Yeah some people would call you Selfish, I wouldn't though. Skyrim's selling point to me is the environment, dungeon crawling, and the story.

Everything i've seen from the numerous Dark Souls is to put it loosely is very hack and slashy (although on a greater level). I will buy this, just in a few months as I have other games I would rather play.
