Dark Souls Will Eat Skyrim's Face @ IGN

I really haven't followed D3. But I will probably pick it up since I got a new PC on the way and am somewhat curious. I really dug Diablo, but when D2 came out, it seemed kinda boring compared to stuff like BG2, so I quit during the second world. I've tried the Dungeon Siege series, it puts me to sleep.

Why can't they both be great games? Oblivion was one of my favorite games of all time, as was Demon's Souls. It's silly to sit here and insist one game will be better than the other when neither game is even out yet. The gameplay footage from both games look incredible.

If I had to pick one game or the other, gun to my head, I'd go with Skyrim. I love the wide open world, absolute freedom to go wherever, I'm partial to 1st person view, the ability to have dialogue with anyone and everyone in the game, and the amazing scope of exploration. Fortunately, we don't have to pick one or the other...we get to have both.

Diablo 2 was pretty good, but pretty much everything in Diablo 3 is dumbed down and stripped down to fit the console experience better, from the top to the bottom.

If you just look at a features comparison of Diablo 2 to Diablo 3, that will be made pretty clear.

They are continuing what they did with WoW and how they dumbed it down to the lowest common denominator. Well, that's carried over to Diablo 3, and it includes microtransactions on top of the $60 the game will cost at launch.

Not silly. Each series has a track record. IMO for the time it was introduced, Daggerfall>Morrowind>Oblivion<Skryim (I haven't played it but I know it will be better)

Despite the name, Dark Souls is basically a direct sequel to Demons Souls, made by the same people. The early fan and reviewer impressions are phenomenal. DS was one of the my favorite games of the last 5 years, so it stands to reason the sequel will be too. Whereas both Morrowind and Oblivion left a somewhat sour taste in my mouth, especially Oblivion. The level scaling and loot scaling and lack of worthy loot made the game flat out suck, it was not fulfilling until Oscuro and others came out with their mega mods.

I can see why you'd pick the open world of Skyrim. It's sort of like GTA. I like open world game a lot too, but I just think the TES series has gone in the wrong direction. I'd rather a next gen TES game made by Bethesda of old. But I will pick up Skyrim, because let's face it. They don't make many AAA RPGs anymore, and it's my favorite genre.

I will probably get Skyrim once the GOTY version is released, a year or 2 for now, I'm not about to pay full price for the game and THEN be bombarded with DLC, I will inevitably wait for the GOTY which will include all the DLC and the expansion.

I can wait forever, I'm in no particular hurry.

I see your point and I have no problem assuming that both games will be great, if they're not considered among the top 5 games of the year I'll be shocked. But to be certain one game will be better than the other, you just never know. I hate to mention this, but you can't completely discount the possibility that Dark Souls won't be as good as DS. On paper it seems like they've got all the bases covered, but as a developer, capturing the magic of a classic game is one of the hardest things to achieve. You more or less have to get lucky.

Fallout New Vegas comes to mind. On paper, it should've been better than Fallout 3. You could upgrade your weapons, you had multiple types of ammo, you could craft ammo from components, you could craft all kinds of stuff from from scratch, you could look down sight on your weapons, etc...these were all things Fallout 3 didn't have. And yet, they just weren't able to recreate the magic of Fallout 3...not for me anyway.

At least with Skyrim, we know that it uses a brand new engine. But even Skyrim could fail to achieve the magic of previous games in the series. You just never know. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed and try to enjoy both for what they are. Dark Souls/Demon's Souls are about as dark and serious as they come, nobody else is putting out RPGs with their morbid tone. Skyrim, meanwhile, is the only triple-A RPG out there (as you mentioned) with a totally open world. They don't need to compete imo.

Check out all the new online elements Dark Souls will have...and there may even be more than these:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/119/1196352p1.html

I think of those listed, Vagrants intrigues me the most. FROM soft is really pushing the envelope, can't tell you how please I am as a lifelong fan of the Armored Core series (a hugely underrated series which most people never even heard of) that FROM soft came through with Demon's Souls and is finally receiving the commercial success they've always deserved. They're going to give us games unlike any other developer because of it.

That's the very message I've been pounding home for the past week or so.

I can't wait, 6 more days untill this game will be in my hands. Plus I get the 10th off from work, so i'll have a 3 day weekend that weekend. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!

IGN is gonna do a live stream tommorrow, I will definitely check it out!!! It starts at 12:00 noon, PST

It's funny that I've only JUST heard of these two shitty games(dark souls BS) in the last week, then I remember "oh right they are on consoles", and I go back to completely ignoring shit games on shit systems.

;)

Sir, I am the biggest console hater in town and I have even feigned injury before when someone has passed me the PS3 controller at a party to play Gears of War (I pretended I busted in my hand in a filing cabinet at work) so I can avoid touching the disgusting, vile thing...

BUT

Demon's Souls is a game that transcends that. I would buy a console and have this as my only game and pretend it's a dedicated arcade system or something and try to drown out the fact that I am touching a console with copious amounts of alcohol as I cry myself to sleep in the fearful, evil, dark, and unforgiving world of the best RPG ever made.

What is Dark Souls?

Edit: This looks schaweeet! I dig the classical style. If Elder Scrolls will melt MY face, and this will melt Elder Scroll's face, what do I play first? Poor Zelda has a lot of competition this year.

Fuck Skyrim, it's garbage can material compared to Dark Souls.

Play Demon's Souls first. You don't need to as it's a separate story but it will get you warmed up to the "hardcore" and unforgiving RPG style.

A wise decision, but FEAR NOT SIR!

You can enjoy both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, and the purchase would have been worth it.

You're making the right decision here.

I just got Demon Souls to test this game out - and I am not really feeling it yet. I will give it more time but to me it feels awfully grindy for a supposed top notch title. I don't feel its much better then oblivion - never mind games like Skyrim or Mass Effect 2 or fallout 3. Its hard alright though - you die and you have to start over again.. And I guess cause its a console game the graphics seems pretty mediocre...

But I will keep playing it some to give it a fair shake. Still modern RPG's try to tell a story.. I am not sure its in the same catergory of game as Skyrim at all. I just got done with Deus Ex (which was kinda easy - probably should have tried hard) and it was either this or Witcher 2..

i am thinking I should have gone with Witcher 2 at this point..

It takes a while, then it "clicks" then you realize what the game is all about, then you will rush back here and revise your post or condemn it.

Give it time, as you said.

But be aware, the game isn't for everyone.

What class are you playing and how far are you? I can give you advice.

if you're completely new, I recommend starting out as a Knight, Royalty, or a Temple Knight.

I never got far in FO3. I bought the game day one and it ran beautifully. I had maybe 3-4 hours of gameplay outside of the first vault, then I saved my game and reformatted my PC and the game never ran properly afterwards. Same exact drivers and it would crash literally every 2-5 minutes. And I got tired of waiting for a patch and moved on.

Well I put a few hundred hours into Oblivion, and like I said, I have a strong hunch Skyrim will be the better game, so I'm no doubt getting Skyrim day one.
The Skyrim videos I've seen do remind me a lot of Oblivion. Not the graphics so much, the faces look so much better, but the game play and combat does. I hope it's got some surprises. But more so than most, Bethesda tends to over hype their games' features. I followed the Oblivion PR closely, and feel they outright lied and shaded the truth about the features that game would have.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Skyrim improves as much over Oblivion as I know is possible.

If Skyrim approaches a rung or 2 below Morrowwind, I'd be impressed, in fact, that would cause me to buy it and not wait for the GOTY edition.

However, asking for "Oblivion" is setting the bar pretty low.

After watching a bunch of Dark Souls streams I've come to the conclusion that one area Dark Souls greatly surpasses Skyrim is monster design. While I'm sure I'll still love Skyrim, the incredible assortment of odd and frightening monsters in Dark Souls is pretty unmatched in any modern action-rpg.

I need more believers, I want an entire congregation on here to play with when the game is released. We must stand together against the evils inside Dark Souls and conquer death.

WHO WILL STAND WITH ME?

Don't know about Dark Souls but whatever complexity Oblivion had is being either dumbed-down or removed completely in Skyrim, by the developer's own admission. If you take it as an open-world fantasy title with very light RPG elements then you won't be disappointed.

Skyrim will look better on the PC than on consoles, and play at a higher frame rate. Further, it will have full support for the 360 controller which I prefer over kb/m, and those who prefer kb/m will have that option as well. In other words, it will be superior to the console versions in every way. If that makes it 'consolized', then consider me a fan of consolization.

You guys are making it sound like Skyrim's gonna be a PS2 port.

Alot of people here want to be victimized and find that complaining makes them feel vailidated.

I find the enjoyment in the games I play, most here appear to want to be entertained by the games they play.

This simple difference in perspective on gaming can change the perception of games by an incredible margin.

Your post implies that Skyrim will be a better game than Dark Souls because it will be on PC whereas Dark Souls will not.

When in fact the PC version is nothing more than the PS3/360 version, there IS no PC version :p, and i'm talking about Skyrim here.

Regardless, first person anything was meant to be played with a mouse and keyboard. It's a much better experience.

It had better lighting and slightly better texures and didn't lock out modders, which apparently counts as a proper PC version with some.

Of course, they overlook how unstable the Gamebryo engine is on PC...

Gamebryo seemed to get worse the older it got. Morrowind had problems, but nothing compared to later Gamebryo games like FO3 or New Vegas.

I agree, and reusing Gamebryo screams sheer laziness.

Honestly it appears that with Skyrim, they focused too tryhard on making the game look so good that they forgot to put an actual game underneath.

Gamebryo is horrible & they shouldn't have based the "new" engine on it. I'm realizing how much of a failure Bethesda is becoming. Fallout 3 & FO: New Vegas both had such horrible glitches that I couldn't continue playing after I had advanced pretty far in... I'm still pissed off about that.

I quit on my way to find "Dad" in the radio tower area, that was about halfway? I think? I'm not entirely sure.

But yeah, it was glitchy and the engine sucked.

Adding mods makes it crash even more & save corruption seems to be the common theme for Gamebryo games.
