Whatever your views on Global Warming may be, you just have to defer to the Swedes to know where the skiing conditions are headed. Regardless of the driving force behind its construction, there’s no doubt that this is one really cool way to enjoy the ski season…..no matter what the outside temperature may be.

Seems like something some rich Saudi investors would do.... in the Middle East... really Sweden? what's your latitude? You need skiing year round?

It would be better if they included a vertical roller coaster as a way to get back to the top :D

Now that's creative...capitalize on false bullshit global crap and then create a profit on an alternative indoor 'the way the climate used to be' ski slope business. Now thats marketing!

Kind of reminds me of those old futuristic movies where the kids never went outside due to climate pollution and never saw a real tree in person...

Yep, yep, global warming is all a conspiracy put forth by the indoor ski resort companies.

No Al Gore jokes [yet]? Highly disappointed LOL. ;) Seems so very artificial, wonder how long-time skiers will handle it. Being a FL boy myself, seems mighty un-natural.

I have to imagine that the final design will have vertical support pillars instead of something that looks like a giant comb fell from space.. Why subject your building materials to so much extra stress?

During winter, they could double the size of the ski park buy just using the roof, and the snow that naturally fall on top of it. This is not about global warming, as much as it is about creating an artificial mountain suitable for skiing year round as close to a dense population center as possible. I know one of my biggest gripes about going skiing, is the drive to the mountain.

I hate when people bring global warming in as an advertising buz word. Especially when the facility in question is unlikely to be what anyone would consider green. Yeah, I am calling BS on the self sufficient part. Lip service at best imho. The electricity needed to keep the slopes frozen year round will be massive. A couple wind turbines put up for show are not likely to cover it.

Why let physics get in the way of a good scam? :p

It's not a scam, but it's just in the early planning stages. It's actually only about 30 miles from where I live. They've been writing a bit about it in the local newspapers and such.

Here's a Google Translate article from Swedish media:

There are really no good places for skiing in this part of Sweden, because it's so flat. The lower altitude also means there's no guarantee that there will be enough snow despite the latitude. You have to travel hundreds of miles north from Stockholm to find some really good slopes. This new ski park will be located in the middle of the most densely populated region in Sweden, very close to the capital and several other large cities, making it much more accessible.

It's a pity that Sonny Bono didn't wait for something like this to be built so that he wouldn't have risked his life on the real thing. Maybe then his daughter Chastity might have been raised with a little more sanity.

I expect free market conservatives to self-detonate in flaming balls of irony as they realize novel opportunities to capitalize on climate change while also struggling to deny earth's climate is rapidly changing.

Something this stupid could only be done with government money. Stockholm is cold enough for four months of outside skiing, six months on a north slope. This is plenty for local, recreational skiing. It's also dirt-cheap in comparison to what this monstrosity will cost.

Then, there's the Scandinavian Mountains where people would continue to go for ski vacations.

Nah there's still more money in oil.

The evolution of a Conservative:

"The Earth isn't warming."

"The Earth is warming, but it's not because of human activity."

"The Earth is warming. It doesn't matter why, it's a great business opportunity."

"Government, give me tax breaks and subsidized loans to open up my indoor ski mountain."

At least they evolve. The others, just scream louder while driving SUV's to fund raisers.:D

The Devolution of a Liberal:

1970's: "The Earth is experiencing global cooling. We must therefore bankrupt the nation by spending billions of dollars on the problem and when it doesn't succeed, we'll just assure everyone that things would have gotten worse if it weren't for our intervention."

1990's: "The Earth is experiencing global warming. We must therefore bankrupt the nation by spending hundreds of billions on the problem and when it doesn't succeed, we'll just assure everyone that things would have gotten worse if it weren't for our intervention."

Today: "The Earth is experiencing climate change. We must therefore bankrupt the nation by spending trillions of dollars on the problem and when it doesn't succeed, we'll just assure everyone that things would have gotten worse if it weren't for our intervention."

Future: "Where'd I misplace my NAMBLA card?"

It looks like in the 1980s, we went too far in preventing global cooling. Moderation in everything.

Future: "Where'd I misplace my NAMBLA card?"

Ouch!
