So how have the delays in BD affected AMD's bottom line with your purchases recently?

I for one refuse to play the CPU race-to-the-bottom game and spend 300+ bucks for a processor just for gaming and surfing the web. I have no qualms spending work money on Intel, where we need the latest and greatest, but my own dollars go for AMD. My 965 BE quad core still runs super great at home -- I can run any current game at near max settings -- so I'm really only willing to spend more money on hard drives and video cards now. AMD has proven to me that Intel is ripping us off.

I see BD competing with Sandy Bridge, mainly the FX-8150 vs. 2600K, but I'm not expecting a blowout. I'll be happy if BD performs only marginally better. But I believe we're gonna see a bit more than a marginal increase in performance. It certainly has the potential. As for the wait, I'm patient guy. But I've seen nothing that leads me to believe that AMD has bypassed the September 19th target date. I fully expect BD to be released between now and then.

Well, I just bought a 2500k with some insurance money, since my Q6600 rig got fried...

So... If that's any indication...

I also don't believe BD will match SB. Perhaps it will in some clockspeed range (depending on IPC/clockability) but I believe SB will surpass it (either through the ability to hit higher clocks, or simply have higher IPC).

Only the K series Sandy Bridge can overclock. And most of them hit mid to high 4ghz. So they aren't that impressive if you ask me. And its multiplier based anyways which is overclocking for pussies. Just like those easy overclock buttons.

Mid to high 4GHz is not that impressive? You running something besides Sandy Bridge that does that and does it as efficiently?

Didn't think so.

And you can get a K series SB i5 for 200$.

I doubt BD is going to be breaking the 5ghz barrier on air too frequently... If at all. Or it will and it's IPC will be much lower, therefore leveling the play field.

Multiplier OC is for pussies, but it's the lay of the land with current chips. I'd OC FSB over Multiplier any day, but sadly this isn't an option... Making OCing easy isn't exactly a bad thing though... In fact, I'd argue it's a very, very good thing.

I don't build many higher-end systems, but I've built three since Bulldozer's initial delay that would most likely have gone to AMD had the product actually been available.

That said, I've built numerous low-end gaming boxes with Llano APUs in the same time frame. And even more Zacate-based basic rigs since January.

My 760 hit 4.4ghz on air the first night I started overclocking it with four dimms, so yes I have ran something that hit those kinds of speed with ease.

That's not really mid to high though. I had my i7 930 at 4.4GHz but backed it off to 4.2GHz to accommodate the summer heat. Aren't the majority of 2600K OC'ers hitting 4.6 to 4.9GHz? I know the differences here aren't huge, but Sandy Bridge seems to be a standout. If BD does what it can do, I'll be happy.

Wasn't trying to burst your bubble or anything. I just don't consider Sandy Bridge's performance to be unimpressive.

To answer the OP's question, I decided just to buy a new mobo + 16GB DDR3 for $130 from newegg to pair with my Propus. It ought to be a nice upgrade, and I'm tired of waiting to see how Bulldozer's going to shake out (that, plus I decided it really wasn't in my budget right now anyway). I really regret not spending a little more $ last year and just getting a mobo that supported DDR3, but now I have a nice backup mobo +6GB DDR2 for future use, I guess.

Just put a z68 with 2600k in my rig that has no issues hitting 4.8, so ya at least one sell for sure here.. Can't wait forever!

I think that Bulldozer will perform about on par with the last generation i7 parts on the IPC side. Which compared to SB isn't that bad. However, I also foresee it have a ton of headroom for overclocking.

I was holding off for Bulldozer but after multiple sources confirmed that it was not coming out anytime soon I just went with a 2500k and a nice motherboard. I considered buying a 990 fx board and a cheap phenom quad core to hold me over but spending an extra 80$ on a cheapie cpu that would have like no resale value once BD came out meant that going that route the fx 8150 would cost me basically 400$ and well a 2500k costs half that so BD would have to had been some sort of magical rainbow unicorn powerd cpu for it to make sense for me to buy it.

AMD - Barton xp2500
...

Oh man, so good. Had my Radeon 9600, Barton 2600, 1 whole gig (1GB!) of ram all on an NForce 2 board with SoundStorm. I played the crap out of CS:S on that computer. good times...

but Anwyays, contributing to the thread: yeah, they missed back to school, plain and simple. According to this Llano is the issue, not bulldozer. Bulldozer was late to get to manufacturing (and I'd wager good money Global Foundries was late in getting to production), but the yields look fine.

I'm hoping I can manage both a new Llano based laptop and a Bulldozer based desktop in the next few months.

last November I remenber thinking I should wait to build a system because BD is right around the corner, but I needed a system and parts are cheap in November so I built a semi budget 1055T system. I'm glad I did because I'd still be waiting 8 months later with no definative release date in sight.

strong rumors suggest September 19th.

The delay will not a make intel lower down the prices of SB CPUs and let Intel enjoy its monopoly

For my gaming machine - I was tired of waiting. I went Intel. I would have waited longer if there had been official performance numbers and an official release date. The choice to go Intel would probably have been the same though because of AM3+.

For my other machines - I will wait on Ivy Bridge and possibly Komodo/Trinity/Krishna provided they arrive in the first half of 2012.

BD being late has had no effect on my purchases. Well, I now have most parts and pieces for a nice AM3+ system so I might move my 1055T over for a while just to use the usb 3.0. Although my current Intel and AMD systems are not that up to date, they don't cause me any anguish or rush to upgrade.

tl;dr version
I spent my cpu money on wild womens and whiskey!

Picked up the 2600k on launch. Bulldozer was always going to be in my #2 machine after that. AMD's moronic delays forced me to make an Intel my main. I'm a big AMD fan, but a 6 year delay is ridiculous. While I hope Bulldozer kills my 2600k, I hear otherwise. Still should be a solid #2 machine. I look forward to the cheap Quad-core bulldozers, should be fun to OC and Unlock.

I do hope that even the bottom of the line bulldozers allow for overclocking. That may make the non-K varient of the Core series pointless. Sure the Quad-Core Bulldozer is 10% slower than an equivalant Ghz i5(i5 2400), BUT it has a 1.2Ghz OC headroom where as the i5 has 0 (not taking into account the Turbo overclocking method, which is actually not bad, but limiting).

hasn't effected me one bit.

My current cpu is more than fast enough for what i need it to do. I have a 990fx board in my closet just waiting to go.

So when they are actually released i will pick one up, but there is no rush for me.

I just laugh at the people who say amd had delays so i went with intel. So what? its a computer part, you act like you are not loyal or something. Buy the part that performs the best for the money you have to spend.

Intel sticker or Amd sticker, both are just processors.

I've owned both intel and amd rigs. I currently have a Amd rig, because at the time i upgraded i could drop a hexcore into my current am2+ board. So i didn't have to buy new ram, a new cpu and a new motherboard. Logical choice for me, esp since i do a lot of video encoding. Only reason i have a 990fx board now, is because i wanted to get sata 3.0 and usb 3.0 and ddr3 ram. I haven't bothered to install it yet because i figured i'd just pick up a bulldozer cpu and just do it all at once. Sure they have been delayed but won't stop me from getting one.

My PR contact suggests the same. They shipped on Tuesday and are expected to land in retail outlets on or shortly before the 19th. There are no reported delays that suggest a launch at a later date.

I was waiting for BZ but back in May I went SandyBridge 2500k. Love it, glad I bought when I did as I can't imagine still waiting for an upgrade but my old system was garbage.

My current rig's pretty decent, so I'm not in any hurry. I am anxious though. Bought a Lian Li A05FNB for the build and have been modding it and buying extras here and there. Should be a tight little build when it's complete. Been holding off on getting a mobo expecting to see a few more hit the market. MSI has a couple on the way, but I've been waiting for ASUS to make another move. The AM3+ Sabertooth is what I've pegged for the build, but I was hoping to see another revision of it. May not happen.

I wish the AM3+ Sabertooth had two Intel nics. Then that would be THE board as far a i'm concerned.

OH MY GOD OCT 12TH????

I need a second machine for friends to play the BF3 demo on 29th.
Looks like I'm going to buy a 2100 or something else to go along with my 2500k.

Was really hoping to buy a BD this weekend and use it as my primary with the 2500 as a back up...

yeah...

the rig in my sig is dead, so i need a replacement. I was really hoping to go with the green team but it looks like I might grab an intel chip. That said, if bulldozer is a nice part intel price cuts are sure to ensue... and I do like this laptop...
