GTX 580 Owners Thread

Just got my new GTX 580. I love everything about it. Its fast and quiet. I upgraded from a GTX 460 which was a very nice card. This card comes close to doubling it.

The default fan profile allows the card to run at 85C. This bothered me at first but it keeps the fan only running at around 60% under full load. Stays nice and quiet.

Still cant do Crysis maxed out at 1920x1080 and maintain 60 FPS. But I knew that going in. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Is that MB just small or is the case that much bigger?

that 580 looks really lonely in there, get him a friend.;)

LOL

Its a MicroATX. When I first installed it I was laughing about that to. The case is supposed to be a mid tower but it is the biggest mid tower I've ever seen.

I would like to go SLI in the future but that would require a whole new MB and PSU and while I'm at it might as well get Sandy Bridge:).

Is there someone using the latest WHQL drivers?

It makes my system hangs (2x580 in SLI) also if the cards are not overclocked.
I'm back to 275 drivers.

I'm using the new WHQL drivers -- no issues to report. Also, I can't remember the last time I had a real problem with any graphics card driver (be it from Ati or nvidia) it's been so long.

Same here to be honest (touches wood, strokes rabbit foot, spins 3 x counterclockwise etc etc)....

280.26 whql rock solid on 2x 570 here. Nvidia drivers have not given me any issues, while ati/amd have a lot over the years.

Just got the Asus 580 Direct CUII, my first nVidia card, upgrading from a 4890 OC. Stock 782/2000, after a night of games its stable at 900 core. Memory is weird due to that error fixing thing I've been reading about, not sure how to figure out where it's stable. I can get to 2350 without a noticeable problem, but I brought it back down to 2100 after learning about memory weirdness. 76c on load with the 'stock' cooler (i.e stock for this card, much beefier than the regular cooler).

On newest drivers on the 590 as well with no issues...

Actually haven't had any trouble going to newest nvidia drivers on 0 day or close to it in the past 2 years.

there is no need to oc the memory, just leave it at stock.

i still dont understand why people feel the need to oc the memory.

I've been out of the hardware loop for a few years. You always used to OC the memory along with the core, but it seems that's changed.

I'm pretty happy this thing doesn't go above 78c @ 900 out of the box. My last two cards (x800XT PE & 4890 OC) barely budged 30 Mhz.

I just ordered a 580 for my new rig I'm building (don't have it yet). My question is this: Does OCing the 580 make a real difference? Or is there only a couple fps to be found?

You're always gaining small amounts when OCing. Performance increases in the 10-20% range. If the 5 FPS you're gaining is taking you from 25 to 30 min, it's valuable. 60-65? Not so relevant.

Good point.

In the past when I've OCd the video card, I never really saw a noticeable difference, unlike OCing the cpu.
Currently, my e6300 is clocked at 3Ghz up from 1.86Ghz, where as I'm running the 5870 stock.
I plan to OC the 2600k, but I was wondering if there would be a benefit to OC the 580 also. I guess not, but we'll see what kind of FPS we get in BF3...

Edit: By the way, how is micro-stuttering with the 580's in SLI ? Still an issue like other cards of the past?

I have 2 monitors. I game with one, but use the other one for viewing other programs while I game. Whether it be stats on a website, or just whatever....

Problem is this: I can't figure out how to have the 2nd monitor "on" while I game. My old 5870 had no problem with this, but with the 580, the 2nd screen goes black as soon as I load a game.

What am I doing wrong? I looked everywhere in the settings...
Please help.

good question i would like to know this too please

Installed my Asus GTX580 Matrix Platinum, runs like a beauty but need to bench it some more and start overclocking it.
One annoying thing though, I also got an NZXT H2 and with the Matrix it seems to heat up a bit in the case, not the graphics card, that's fine, the CPU however is idling 46-52c instead of 38-45c... hmm.

I have this too, the way I get around it is to have another program open on the second monitor, and then after launching a game I alt+tab to the other program and then back into the game. Sometimes I have to do it twice but it usually works the first time....

well my 580 is in the shop should get it back around the 15th
i think Deus Ex killed it

lock ups in games artifacting on the desktop and in games
should be at eVGA on wed. and if im lucky ill have a new card in my hands by the 15th or 16th

using a friends old 9800GTX+ its slow but gets the job down for now

edit
also driver crashes if any one is having issues with drivers getting "windows recovered from a video driver error" thing it may be your card and not the driver

I'm thinking about getting the MSI GTX580 Lightning EX 3GB version, is that any good and is the factory overclock stable without having to do any voltage tweaks or whatever? I sold both my GTX 580's and I need a new card.

Loving the Asus Matrix Platinum. 900/1800/4400 at the moment, rock solid and powerful with very little effort.

looks like my replacement 580 should be here some time next week

If you don't mind me enquiring, what temps are you getting with that setup and what fan speed are you using?

I've got my 580 Matrix Platinum in an HTPC (don't ask!) and I've been tempted to try and eek out as much performance as possible at stock volts without changing the fan speeds and was looking for a little insight into where a sweet spot might be between performance and fan noise/temp.

I'm still quite surprised how powerful this card is, yet how quiet it is under load.

Should be receiving the Asus ROG GTX 580 today, can't wait to overclock that sucker and see where I can get. Will post a couple of pics once it's in. Upgrading from a GTX 275, it was about that time.

Side note: I'm finally able to access my account again after several years. (Thanks to Kyle!)

I'm getting 88c Max with a custom fan profile that tops off at 80% until 90c where it'll go to 100% fan speed.

This is with a 9600GT up against it though, replacing it with a low profile GT 520 which will bring the temperatures down.

Changing the subject here, what're people getting out of their memory on the GTX580 and what voltages are you running the memory at?

is there any sense on buying a 3GB card with a SLI configuration and a 1920x1200 monitor?

do you think that this cards has enough power to handle more than 1.5GB of memory?
a more interesting question.
Is there any title that uses more than 1.5GB at 1920x1200? texture buffering is not considered as a requirement obviously.

Crysis 2 can load up to 1.5GB of RAM on a 1.5GB of ram cards but it doesn't require 1.5GB of ram because that utilization is only prefetch.
Empty RAM = wasted ram
but
big quantity of prefetched ram = wasted ram and power contumption.

No, it's a waste at 1920x1200. You don't really need more than 1.5GB for 2560x1600 either, it's just multi-display resolutions you really need it.

Prefetching is not a complete waste. Waiting until the last second to load something is generally not a good idea if you can avoid it.

I'm certainly not saying that you'd get your money's worth out of the extra 1.5GB, but I wouldn't say it's completely pointless either.

Just ordered my EVGA 580 Classified 3GB, it only features dual DVI, sadly no HDMI or Displayport (mini or otherwise), however that's what DVI to HDMI cables and sound cards are for :). I have a 12x LG Blu-Ray Burner, a Dell 23" 1080p DVI Display, and a LG 47" 1080P Passive 3D HDTV (47LW4600). Sound is taken care of by Corsair SP2500 Speakers and a Creative Labs HD Titanium Sound Card.

So what can I do here? Can I game in 3D and play 3D Blu-Rays right from my PC to my HDTV? Also, when using the Dell for web browsing, can I use the HDTV for a 3D movie at the same time? If I ever get a second 580 Classified, can I flank my HDTV with a second Dell, while having the center HDTV in 3D? Do I still need a second/third card for Physics?

After considering the possible cost of quality a remote control device and blu ray player software that works to my standards - if that even exist - I decided to pick up a panasonic set top 3D blu ray box instead. That solves a lot of my multitasking issues, now the 580 can just do 1 thing - play games awesomely fast. I will still use the 580 to connect to the tv for internet streaming and 3D gaming if possible.

285.38 has been released.

Great performance improvements on my GTX580 SLI.
This driver increased 7FPS in Crysis2 if compared to the 285.27, no bad, no bad at all :)

My system is in signature, I runned the test at 1920x1200 all maxed out.
The first three results was done with 285.27, the last three results has been done with the latest beta.

My 580SLI scale in a wonderful way in Battlefield 3.

With one card I get a minimum framerate of 35FPS and a maximum of 70FPS.
With two cards I get a minimum of 70FPS and a maximum of 135FPS.

Great scaling.
