Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

But....that's WoW. And that would be stupid as fuck.

The majority of the people who will be buying this game, are the ones who want lightsabers in a STAR WARS setting. Doubting the lore/story in the early player levels of a beta is as ignorant as reading the first couple of pages in a script and doubting that as well. On the flip side, praising it during such is equally as ignorant.

But what I'm saying is that in the setting of an MMO, the atmosphere falls by the wayside. It's a tissue thin veneer used to cover up the boring, samey gameplay that has been cloned a hundred thousand times verbatim since WoW came out. People expecting the Star Wars pedigree to somehow carry the game are delusional, especially in this day and age when all new Star Wars games are muff cabbage.

People have had faith in so many big name MMOs since then that have just collapsed, soiled and forgotten, under the weight of high expectations. TOR has the highest expectations of them all, and quite frankly I have no faith whatsoever in the new Bioware's ability to make a non-shitty game. ME2 and DA2 convinced me quite thoroughly of their incompetence.

Why, exactly, are they delusional? Bioware has a great track record when it comes to story ( a lot better than most), so why are we delusional in believing the story will carry us through the game, until the end-game? I'm not seeing your point here.

While ME2 and DA2 weren't well recieved, maybe it was your fault in setting those expectations so high in the first place? By themselves, they're better-than-average games well worth the admission. But you keep lambasting those with high expectations when you, yourself seem to have that bar set just as high

EDIT: I don't mean to make this personal at all. I'm always up for a good debate ;)

ME2 was fun and I enjoyed it. DA2 I still haven't finished yet but I'm enjoying it. Where is the problem? I'm not seeing how these are somehow bad games. I know people like to cry about those two but I never quite understood why exactly. Is it because they are aren't as hardcore RPG as their first itterations were?

Umm wait, what? ME2 was VERY Well received, by both critics and fans.

DA2 on the other hand, was lukewarm at best.

Mainly because of it's non-epic feeling story (compared to DA:O) plus the fact that it takes place in KIrkwall th emajority, yet the city is so..generic, there' sno life to it, nothing unique really and they used a ton of copy and pasting for it + dungons. It just lacked any o f the redeeming parts of DA:O imo.

Well the point is I think people make alot more of the whole "well umm ya BW used to be good but man look at how shiity DA2 is so...uhh like ya....that mean this new bw studio in austin is gonna suck and TOR is gonna suck....ya makes sense amirite?" Whatever.

I have a good friend in the beta now and I've seen first hand him playing and I like mostly all of what I've seen. I simply can't wait to jump in.

I am in beta now, and I played WoW for a long time. I can say I love the way the game is right now; haven't seen most of it (only on the first starting world), but the gameplay is cool. Voice acting is great (adds a lot to the storytelling and feel of the game), combat is pretty simple so far.

Ok, you can say it's copied from WoW, but just as a reminder, WoW wasn't the first MMO on the market. I'm pretty sure they took some of the UI elements, story, feel, etc. from other preceding MMOs.

Anyone with a taste for RPGs and some Star Wars love should find a good game in SW:ToR. Heck, anyone with a taste for a well-produced game should give SW:ToR a try.

This is the overwhelming sentiment I hear from most testers. Sounds good to me.

The Sith Warrior origin playthrough video someone shot at Gamescon is amazing. I skipped the dialogue and story though, to keep it fresh.

Not getting into beta is starting to piss me off when my friend who hasnt preordered, doesnt ever get on forums, and sign'ed up for swtor account/beta testing a month ago just got in. And his computer can barely run the game on low/medium settings he said.

Seriously Bioware?

Yea, I have been on the SW:TOR forums since 2009, singed up the day beta sign ups were out, still havne't gotten in :(.

I have been playing the beta for about a week now and the game feels solid only some minor flaws and visual glitches, the main thing that bugs me is how hard it is at times to find people to do heroics at higher lvls since you have to shout it in the general chat.....

Damn :(

My plan was to play a Jedi Guardian, as I don't want to ruin any plot spoilers and such for the Sith Warrior in the beta.

“We don’t intend or we don’t expect people to be on Vent and communicating with each other, but we expect them to know how to play their class because if you’ve gotten to Level 50, you know how to play your class. And we want to just make sure that we open it up so that a lot of people can enjoy these epic Star Wars moments.”

this made my day..you have no idea how much i hate vent

the wow kiddies are gonna hate this game..and that makes me happy..they will become bored with it...no doubt in my mind. guild wars 2 is 'their' game..leave swtor for the mature gamers who can appreciate a good storyline..the wow kids will blow right through it and get bored imho

Just curious, why are you eager to try it when you pretty much complain about every single aspect of the game that's been brought up here?

Seems like the raid instances will be more like Rift outdoor raids where everyone gets currency to buy nice stuff for showing up.

Oh, thought you did not want to have the Sith warrior story ruin your starting character's(Guardian) story.

Oh hell no, I'm planning on rolling Sith!!!

I caught the Sith story playthrough they showed at Gamescon, just fast forwarded all the dialogue ;)

Ya! everythings set for my new swtor rig! i2500k@4600mhz and a hd6950 with 3x 1680x1050 monitors for eyefinity. Anyone else doing some major rig upgrades for this game? just need to count down till I can pick up my collectors edition now lol

Not for this game specifically, as it isn't needed.

Deus Ex Human Revolution, on the other hand, I have been preparing for ;)

Heh, it's like this for me and my cousin. He is the exact same as your friend you described, and his beta is just sitting there collecting dust.

I'm getting kind of worried after reading some of the Q&A's about how easy/boring the game is. And that crafting is just like WoW and that the space game is terrible.............

From someone I know who may or may not be in beta, the game is very story driven. If you don't care for story, if you just want to click through quests and run out and do them, this game is not for you.
The game is not revolutionary either. Merely a continuation of the genre.

It's a good, polished, well done MMO. Maybe a few things it does that other MMO's don't but it's not hugely different.

That doesn't mean it's bad. For what it is, for the kind of game they are trying to make, it's great.
If you like the current crop of MMO's there's no reason you shouldn't like this. If you are bored of the current MMO genre then this game probably isn't going to change your mind.

So does anyone know if there was new information released during gamescom?

Plenty, depending on if you keep up with the unofficial and official updates.

DarthHater is a good source for both, as well as BetaCake.

They released details of Huttball and gameplay footage of it as well.

I like the reviews by Total Biscuit :) He gives honest opinion on gameplay and design.

But he seems to like Guild Ward 2 better said that's the MMO to keep an eye on.

im wondering if i can gather ore and animal hides in wilderness parts of the planets to sell at auction house?

can you actually pilot and explore you star ship or is it lame like mass effect 2?

The ship has been described as Mass Effect, where you can craft and develop character story with your companions. Actually, it's exactly like the other two KOTORs. Which makes sense.

Space combat hasn't really been shown outside of beta, but it's been put down quite a bit. It's more of an 'on the rails' shooter. Hopefully this gets addressed in future expansions, as will player/guild housing i suppose.

I would rather it be 'on the rails' than nothing at all yet. If people think it's bad, obviously just don't play it. You can't expect them to have everything right away, hopefully they expand on it in the future though. Same with housing.
