Hackers at the Black Hat Technical Security Conference were able to break into Subaru Outback and start the engine via text message. All you Outback owners can relax, these weren't real criminals, your granola bars and Birkenstocks are safe....for now. :D

A pair of pros from iSec Partners security firm was able to unlock and start the engine of a Subaru Outback using an Android phone and a process they call war texting. By setting up their own GSM network, they were able to snatch up password authentication messages being sent from server to car, allowing them the option to ride off in a brand new crossover.

Yeah, the second I heard about these types of remote starters I knew this would happen.

Going to show this to my brother who owns a keyless 2010 Hyundai Vera Cruz. He'll freak the fuck out. He's so clueless about technology and gets all giddy when lights blinks.

well its not like cars have ever been very hard to steal to begin with.

How do they get past the steering wheel lock, or is that electronic also on the Subaru?

Does this mean people will start stealing cars now?

Oh... wait......

After I get done installing my type of alarm on a car it sure as hell isnt going anywhere on its own. So basicly give me an aftermarket alarm system plus a few extra "goodies" and you car isnt going to be driven off.

If they want your car and it's out in the open, they can get it with a tow truck.

i always lol at people who get all paranoid over the possibility of someone stealing their car, especially when its a POS

my car was broken into yesterday. they stole my gym clothes which i think is funny, but $220 for the replacement window is not funny.

YES. running with my dog yesterday and saw a '85 rusted out Toyota with the fucking club hooked up to the steering wheel.

true thats why i said it wont be driven off if you dont want too. But yes if someone really wants your car they can tow it away. But for most criminals looking for an easy target this would steer them away from hitting this car and they would look elsewhere.

And I've had somebody try to steal my POS. Its called a easy target. When they are bored and just want something easy thennnnn....

Exactly...

My co worker had his 1992 Dodge Caravan stolen last month in Baltimore....it was a total beater.

he used it for going back and forth to work and for transporting junk around on the weekends....he took a flight out of Baltimore and took that to the airport just in case...he was glad he did..:)

I never lock my Mustang Convertible. I'm also not stupid enough to keep anything in it worth stealing.

You can break into it with a razor blade. I'd rather leave the door unlocked so they can steal the spare change in the ash tray than spend another two weeks and $500 replacing the top.
