Socket A

heh heh,i got one that's being retired ,will keep for emergency.: amd xp2600m/Abit nf7-s/2gigs ram- had win7 on it,amazing runs pretty well for what it is.
:) :)

I had a Asus K8V-MX with a Sempron 2800 (Palermo) and a Asus A7S8X-MX with a Sempron 3000 (Thorton). I donated them to a computer drive at work. They were nice machines but used way too much electricity compared to up-to-date stuff. They were both replaced with two quads and a Dell dual core. My electric bill dropped $15/month.

Unless you can't scape enough dough together for a newer system, donate your old equipment to charity or take it to the recycler. This stuff doesn't do anyone any good sitting in closets. You'll thank me later when you realize how much electricity you save with a newer system. There are plenty of charities that would kill for this stuff. You get a tax write-off and they get a system that can be used for a good cause.

Please, no more "memories" and OC'ing posts. I've been seeing alot lately. Get over it. It's time to move on.

whatever,

Mach3 CNC only runs under XP and USB adapters introduce delay error to the controllers.

I will be nursing these systems with integrated parallel ports along to the bitter end.

I have quite a few Duron/Athlon systems still in use (builds I did for others)
I had the most fun with the Duron's though bang per buck wise they were unrivalled at the time.

Have to pick up an Epox board and 1.6 GHz Duron system that's no longer wanted not sure what to do with it but I might soup it up a bit with a new HDD and put some more ram in there. These systems whilst old are still of some use for non demanding users.

At the time ram was not that cheap so simply upgrading the memory to around 1Gb would ensure a fare better performance with XP.

I have an AMD2000+ system here somewhere. I should maybe start folding or something with it. Maybe in Winter. Those things got so damn hot LOL.

I actually have an AMD64 3200+ that is folding right now, I don't recall if that's socket A though, I think it's one of the slightly newer ones.

Really anything over 1ghz is plenty fast for most folks. I am not talking about gamers, or media creation folks. However anyone who just surfs the web, does e-mail, uses instant messangers, or office work, these machines are more than capable of handling such tasks. Alot of these users have gone to labtops as they no longer need the desktop performance, and the performance of modern labtops is more than enough for them.

I still have my
Athlon 1200+,
1 GB PC133,
ATI 9000 64 mb ram,
A7V133 Motherboard,
80gb 5400 rpm hard drive

It is running window 7 right now. Without internet connection. There is no driver for network card.

Agree for office pc's the Duron's and simlar speed processors are plenty good enough. I might "soup up" that old Duron beef up the ram and hey I could put an SSD in there too ;-)

i still have a abit kt7-raid motherboard.

so if someone wants it lol , i suppose i could hook it and up and make sure it still works. Surely was a nice board back in the day.

My KT7-Raid drove me nuts getting to be stable, should have waited a month or two for the KT7A-Raid with the KT133A chipset. I never had another Via board again. However, my KG7-Raid was rock solid.

Both of my Socket A motherboards bit the dust a couple years ago. I could get the DFI fixed if I cared enough, but I don't feel like trying to find the right cap to replace the bad one and I don't feel like trying to solder a new one in. Pretty sure my old 2500 is floating around somewhere, unless my brother tossed it when he cleaned out his computer stuff. Good ol' CPU, lasted me longer than any other piece of computer hardware I've had.

before all the boatware shit 1Ghz was more then enough. but now with bloated flash, java, windows, IE/FF/chrome and all the addon's.. 1Ghz couldn't power crap these days.

You'll be pleased to know that you can get modern systems with parallel ports. Example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186166

If you need legacy components, don't buy Intel. They are horrible at this; their chipsets haven't even included PCI for a while now.

I just retried a old 2500+ Mobile Barton in the last year or so. Best chip I had for playing around with overclocking since the 300A Celeron, and when it was done as a main system dropping it back down to its 35W stock specs gave me years of reliable service as a little file server off in the corner.
Socket A was my go to build all the way from a Tbird 900 through that thing; and they never left me wanting anything else.

I've got an althlon XP 2500+... it just sorta sits there in an unused case. Was my HTPC for a while.

I've got a decommissioned Athlon XP 2400+ in an nForce2 'board with a gig of DDR400, sitting on the top shelf in my closet. It's pretty tempting to keep it around as a Linux server in some useful capacity, but snagging an Atom 'board would yield a net savings on my power bill by the end of a year's use. Maybe it'd be worth selling for money toward buying a better video card for my HTPC... though I doubt I could get $20 for it, now. Then again, there's a lot to say in defense of a 'board that escaped the capacitor plague.
