Chrome OS Notebooks

So I just got one of these dropped off on the doorstep a la UPS at 5:30 this afternoon - what do you suppose the specs are in it, or is there an easy way to determine that from s/n or anything??

Should be the same primary hardware specs as all of the other Cr 48s. Google appears to be sending these out to clear stock, not to have people test a major hardware revision or anything like that.

After playing with a friend's Cr 48, I am saddened that we very likely have already seen the best looking Chrome Netbook that will will ever see. Just plain and black, no gloss screen, no bullshit "piano black" finish that looks like trash after a week.

Until the cloud is as cheap and fast as local storage and execution it'll never replace local computing and the stigma of having all of your data out of your control is a HUGE political issue, even if it may not jive with reality.

If the FBI were to find out that a drug lord was using one of these. Can they subpoena (spellcheck) google for their database?

Agreed, I love the finish of this thing, especially when I compare it to the Asus 1215T I got my wife for Christmas - dust and fingerprint magnet, that one is.

Yes, they do it all the time with emails, cloud server would be no different.

#1 For an information gathering and ad based company like google, Is there the possibility of them autoscanning your files (which should be technically private), and use that to influence their services? i.e. If their server notices that you're storing mostly stockmarket data, you start getting ads that are related to the stock market? Or if you're storing architectural plans, will you start getting 'suggestions' of adding other users (Landscapers, interior designers, etc.) in your contacts?

#2 The subpoena is the most extreme measure, but how about the rest of the time? How prone are they to pressure? Can the safety of your data be protected from corporate pressure? Stock holders? If you were storing MP3's on it, will the RIAA be on your ass?

it's using the old Intel Atom, which has nothing more than a die shrunk GMA 950 - A.K.A. GMA 3100.

Only MPEG-2 GPU decoding - which was useless since... well... the Pentium II, lol. No AVC, no h264, no VC-1, nothing. It stutters badly on720p youtube, and I haven't tried normal MPEG2 or h264 videos yet.

As for the Acer and Sammy models, they have the dual core Atom variant, so that should work better for software video decoding vs the single core Atom on the CR 48 reference. That being said, I'm gonna try and see what settings work well for video playback. The battery is a sheer tank on this netbook.... reminds me of when I first got my m11xr1 :) Insane battery life :p

Actually I now remember seeing a video of the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook "hands-on" on YouTube shortly after the Google conference, and they had a chance to go on YouTube with it. 720p played smoothly, 1080p was choppy (but who cares, the screens aren't 1080p resolution anyway).

Sorry, not going to dig through who knows how many Chromebook vids on YT. But just an FYI to potential buyers.

It can play 720p

#1 You would probably have to check googles EULA to find that out. Although I doubt they would dive into your cloud storage, that seems way to invasive even for googles standards.

#2 If the RIAA puts a lawsuit on you for piracy then yes they can have a court ordered subpoena to allow access to all files on your cloud storage. Would be the same as if they went to your house with a search warrant seizure for all your PCs. But a private company looking to research a possible employee or such I believe would not be possible for them to gain access to that, that would again be invasion of privacy. Then again it's all in the EULA.

Zoutube 720p is not possible on the CR48 (Iäm tzping this post from mz CR48) without noticeable, and major stuttering. The Acer and Sammz models can probablz do so, and probablz more, since thez have the dual core Atom CPUs. As for h264 or MPEGß2 videos, zeah, those I donät know, since Iöm having trouble getting the built in media plazer to plaz... anzthing, reallz :(

As for whz mz KB is all screwz, I dunno. I think I accidentallz selected the German KB, or something. The parenthesis are one kez, off, too. brb

oops, it was in German, now to get rid of the umlauts sitting in place of mz semi-colon kez... and the swapped z / y positioning.

EDIT: Fixed. - all normal again.

Played with one at work today, it's very 'macbook like', style wise. Cool size and everything but i wouldn't buy one unless it had at least a c2d in it (and windows working)

Are you trolling? You're missing the entire point of this netbook,,, the entire point.

well.... very honestly, it needs at least a lither more CPU oomph and RAM. Of course, it would miss the point of this being a dev/beta/test platform. The N455 in the CR48 is limited to 2GB of RAM, as it is :p Luckily, the uselessly overpriced and glossy Sammy and Acer use the faster dual Core atoms that support 4GB of RAM :)

But they are priced very, very, very close (in particular, Acer), to their AMD Fusion netbooks, on newegg, close to the E350 model....

What's the deal with the Chrome Store? All those "apps" are are glorified bookmarks... what the hell is the point of that store?

They literally do nothing but put a fancy icon ontop of a link, that is all it does.

The idea is that in the future those websites will be more akin to .exe apps we have now. But yeah, they're just links with some extended functionality.

With all the high profile hacks, how are people feelings towards Chrome and Cloud Computing so far?

From the reviews it looks like the samsung offering has a much better display and keyboard than most netbooks. Though I can't remember what the internals were exactly or whether they'd be enough to run windows.

I am all about new gadgets of every variety but am I the only one who is totally unimpressed by these? For the exact same price you can buy a HP DM1Z, which beats this in every conceivable way. I'm don't want to sound like I'm thread crapping. I'm considering a new job that involves a lot of travel, so it's just that this week I've been shopping around for a small laptop and I seriously considered the Samsung for general use abroad. I have used the DM1Z and it's very small and great. But I haven't put my hands on the Samsung yet.
